You feel bad for the losers on a televised competition? Don’t you think that maybe, just maybe, those contestants realized when they signed the fucking contract that they only had a 6.25% chance to win? Or, if we’re talking about the finale only, a 33% chance to win? Don’t you think the mere exposure gained from this show will help a few of these people? Sure, Nimma, who went first, got nothing out of it, but SOMEONE HAS TO LOSE EACH WEEK! It’s the whole premise of a fucking competition! Someone wins, and someone fucking loses!
Furthermore, what does this reply from you have to do with the rest of the diarrhea you’ve sprayed in that thread? You’ve been harping about how beautiful all the contestants are and for everyone else to stop being so meeeeeeeeeaaaaannnnnnnn to them. Guess what: Stephanie is cute, but only about a 5. Richard has a douche-bag haircut and frowns when he means to smile. Lisa looks like a cunt when she’s pissed off, which is roughly 99% of the time she’s shown. Plus, for the first 13 weeks of the show, it looked like she didn’t shower, wash her face, or use shampoo. Seriously, she looks like a disgusting human being. Do her looks matter in the context of cooking? Nope. Are they fair game to discuss, since she’s on a fucking TV show? Yup.
If you have body-image issues, like 90% of us on this board do, keep them on you. How did shitting on that thread repeatedly help you? Nothing you said made anyone reading that say, “Hey, it IS mean to pick on people on TV for how they look! I’ll go plant sunflowers and wash away the world’s ugliness now!” Instead, it made a bunch of people say, “Wow, devilsknew, you’re a knob.”
Wow. Overreact much? I just read that whole damn thread, on a subject that may I say otherwise does not interest me at all, and I didn’t see a single instance of threadshitting. What I saw was merely a perfectly normal Cafe Society-worthy difference of opinion, which included, I might add, an apology on Devilsknew’s part, unprompted, and a post with a host of Grin smilies to indicate “no hard feelings”.
Time to switch to decaf.
And after you’ve got that nice cup of Folger’s decaf all fixed up, and you’re back at the computer, you might review the definition of threadshitting
Pay particular attention to that last part, where it conspicuously does not say, “Rush into the Pit and start a thread lambasting the poster with whom you have a simple disagreement and label it threadshitting.”
Yeesh.
P.S. I also didn’t see any “diarrhea” sprayed in the thread. Calling Devilsknew’s posts “diarrhea” could be hyperbole–or it could be pointless, hysterical exaggeration. Three guesses which you’ve got there.
And P.P.S. Although I’ve never watched the show, nor do I ever care to, I thought he made an excellent point about reality show contestants being cherrypicked for their looks at the audition process, a point that IMO might be worthy of being explored in a civilized discussion, if half the participants weren’t too busy uselessly Pitting the other half of the participants for imagined crimes.
If you’ve got a disagreement with a poster, you can Pit them because you violently disagree with them. But you can’t Pit them for threadshitting just because you disagree with them. Because ain’t no threadshitting taking place.
Score many points for Devilsknew here for “Most Unjustly Pitted Of The Year”.
Score zero points for you.
As a fan of the show, I can understand wmulax93’s frustration. Even though it may not technically be threadshitting, the vibe I got from devilsknew was of someone who is not a fan of the show and who wasn’t all that interested in discussing (sharing) how we all felt as the tension of the (for me) highly anticipated finale played out. He/she had a point to make that, as previously mentioned, might be worthy of discussion, but not in that thread. Hence the feeling of threadshitting. FWIW.
Eh. If he’d written something like “I feel sorry for all the losers. Except Lisa, who was a gigantic bitch and should have been gone weeks before the end.”, I’d have agreed with him to a point…
Wow, DDG. I just read your post, and thought, “Huh. I attracted the attention of a moderator.” Then, I look under your name and see “Charter Member”. Thanks for the definitions and admonishment, though! Glad to know you’re patrolling the Pit today!
I didn’t look at the Official SDMB Glossary before I pitted devilsknew, sorry.
However, you’re full of shit if you think that was turning into a discussion about the selection process of reality shows and how it relates to physical attractiveness. Maybe you should look at the bios of the contestants. None of them are great looking. None of them could star in a movie. They are all at least decent chefs. To come into the thread, as dk did, and start bitching about how everyone needs to just stop commenting on one contestant’s physical appearance because all of them are “classically beautiful” (whatever the fuck THAT means) is shit-ty, if not shit-ting. Another thread could have been opened to discuss the merits of physical attractiveness of reality TV contestants, just as I opened this tangential thread to bitch about that poster’s shitty posts.
I originally wanted to post my reply in that thread, but realized that it was the wrong place for a post like my OP. So, I put it in here, since it seemed more aggressive than most criticisms in CS.
First, I agree with the others that this is a really stupid reason to Pit somebody. Lamest Pitting of the month. Easily.
Also, what the fuck is up with this shit?
Did you take a poll or are you just projecting your own issues onto the rest of us? Because I don’t really have any that I can think of. With society being the way it is, I’d guess that the majority of women here have such hang-ups. Probably not 90%, but a solid majority. As for men, I would be genuinely suprised if I found out that half of us have body-image issues.
Moderator has intervened in the thread in question. I think the question of whether winners (or even contestants) on soi-disant “reality shows” are only good-looking people is an interesting tangent, but not actually thread-shitting. I have thus ordered that topic to go into a different thread.
There is a difference between being side-tracked into interesting tangential discussions, and being de-railed.
He’s kind of right, though. It pisses me off when other members come in and tell a guy he shouldn’t have started a pit thread and should have just reported the post. The Pit is for complaining about other posters, don’t tell people not to do it. Also, your post was quite similar to the one that [post=9880215]got Shayna scolded[/post] for junior modding.
I honestly wasn’t threadshitting. I’ve watched Top Chef pretty much religously since the first season. I guess that’s why I actually feel for these people. I hate it when the editors propogate so much controversy, and besides, any persons who have worked in a kitchen or restaurant knows a Lisa who has saved their ass on any number of occasions. Bitches expedite, Boi!
I just think its exploitive, and doesn’t reflect reality, and I chose not to jump on the bandwagon or join the posse. Not my thing.
But I’m not naive or self deluded enough to think that this show is an objective contest of the true “Top Chef” in the nation. I think the format is classical “Real World” with a cooking contest almost secondary. I think they are a vetted and screened lot of prospective, photogenic, young “Chef Personalities”. The deck is stacked to begin with and if you don’t think machinations, “production decisions”, and plot mechanisms, are also part and parcel of the production, then I got a bridge to sell you. If they wanted to do a real cooking contest it would be a blind tasting with a panel of chefs or a large pool of judges, but then you got a really boring show.
I think that Tom Collichio and the rest are really judging on food, but they have prejudices of the eye, just like everybody else, and it might be subconscious and would never occur to them they might show favor to a “Cheftestant” based on their looks, unless they brought it to the conscious level.
I really didn’t mean to offend you, wmulax but the science and society of beauty and media sciences, are fairly long established
I got no dog in the threadshitting fight (I didn’t even read the whole thread), but for the record, Lisa is hideous, in personality and in looks. I expected her to be gone weeks before the finale.
Sorry to post twice in a row but some of this merits response . . .
First of all, they don’t even claim to be looking for the top chef in the nation. No one who wants to go on that show is going to compare to an Eric Ripert or Mario Batale. Secondly, yeah, their personalities matter. They stress leadership, the ability to get along, decision-making, etc, pretty heavily. You’re acting like they deny that these things matter. Looks? Your argument is a non-starter to anyone who has ever seen the contestants. These are not Real World brats.
I think you’re seeing exactly what we all see but intepreting it much more antagonistically. It must be stressful to view the world that way.
