Being that you’re so quick to swoop down from high atop your administrative post to pluck the eyes out any ‘soi-disant’ music threads you deem repetitive, why not at least attempt to apply the same vigilance with all these Star Wars threads in Cafe Society.
I’ve never pitted a member of these boards…and am not not gonna start by pitting you. I’m just following forum description guidelines and asking for a little even-handedness. Are 12 Star Wars threads necessary – Or are they too “* not for much purpose*”?
That wasn’t over the line - or too venomous, was it?
I don’t have a dog in this fight – but must admit, I did count the number of Star Wars threads on the first page. At the time (this was a few hours ago), there were “only” seven.
We understand that our fellow geeks are happy and excited – but couldn’t a few of these be combined?
Actually going just from the titles, they all look like they’re fairly dissimilar subjects. I doubt you could prune out more than a couple of them by combining, and maybe one or two more by virtue of their being pointless and mundane, but then you’ve got that whole CS/MPSIMS controversy and let’s just not go there.
So, meh. Give it until Monday and see if the fans are still full of excited frothy geekiness.
I think he meant using the “report this post” function rather than opening a thread to whine. Mods overlook stuff sometimes, especially if they’re not actively scanning the boards for evildoers.
JohnBckWLD, your first link isn’t really about Star Wars at all. It only mentions it in context of the group playing the Star Wars RPG, and is about the GM’s bitch about his suck-ass players and how they’re sabotaging his attempts to do any sort of fun gaming. At least do a cursory glance at the threads before you include them as “evidence” in the apparent (cough) plot to let everyone else but you have fun.
Nah, he’s only complaining about 12 SW threads (11 if you ignore the RPG one). Report the first post in each unnecessary thread and mention which one it could be collapsed into/which thread could be quoted in the closing post to refer to, instead. Frankly, only a couple of them look like they do truly overlap - there are three spoilers-containing threads about Ep III, and you could make arguments for the uniqueness of the rest of them.
You can also just report a post in one of the threads, and mention the others in the comment box. Feel free to do it however you want, though – either way works.
Sorry – I obviously didn’t think that through too well.
As I said, I’m not really that invested in this – I noticed, I was somewhat annoyed, I’ve posted more than the OP in this thread – and with that I’m going to get the hell out of the Pit. I don’t belong here.
I’m not gonna report those posts, because:
[li]There’s probably nothing in them “report-worthy”[]I choose not to read them[]This board is reglated and moderated enough, I’m sure as shit not gonna start playing hall monitor
Ferret Herder, though this may sound contradictory to you, my thread was not composed to “whine” about the number of Star Wars threads. In fact, I wasn’t aware my tone was whiney in nature. Believe it or not, I could care less if there were 40 odes to Mr Lucas’ franchise on page #1 of Cafe Society. The market will eventually decide which are thread-worthy based on number of replies and views…That’s they way I prefer things to be. The reason I posted links and titles to the 12 current Star Wars threads in Cafe Society (notice I avoided including the author’s names so as they wouldn’t feel a need to come here to defend them) was to ask CK Dexter Haven why his strong handed approach to music threads (which he feels tax board resources and hog up page 1 real estate) seems to be different when it comes to Star Wars - or for that matter Star Trek, Comic Books or other similar themed subjects.[/li]
CynicalGabe, I was not pitting “a closure from October.” He decided those threads should cease, I heeded his decision and never complained publicly. I’m not even bitching about his closure from yesterday.
What I was attempting to do was draw a comparison: If discussion of music is, in his words, “irritating” and “should be done off boards” perhaps a more fair approach to handling the large # of Star Wars threads would be to refer the participants to the Star Wars Message Board @ EZ Board.com.

As an unrelated public service announcement, I’d just like to urge everyone to freely use the “Report this post” button without a second thought. All it means is that we’ll take a look at the thread/issue in question. We’ll still treat it exactly as we would if we’d just noticed it on our own. You’re not tattling, you’re not whining, and we won’t get mad if it turns out to be nothing.
I can’t emphasize enough how helpful that button is. Don’t hesitate to use it, seriously!
Excuse me for not hanging out on the SDMB 24/7. As soon as I got online and saw someone had reported the three threads on the same topic, I took action.
The other threads that you mention are different, involving different topics albeit related to the same movie. We’ve had plenty of different topics of discussion on LORD OF THE RINGS as well. If similar threads are brought to my attention, I combine them. You may recall, John, that I offered to merge all your threads (actually, I think, I offered that you keep the past threads and just use one thread going forward.) But a weekly poll is a weekly poll, it’s the same topic each week, even though the data changes.
The request for assistance is NOT outdated. I do not have time to read threads, or even look over titles, unless someone points out a problem. I appreciate the help. One of the sticky threads about which you complain is the rules themselves, and people cannot post to them; hence, a second thread to allow comment. I agree that the third thread has now become redundant, and I will close it.
I would appreciate your help in the future in finding duplications and calling them to my attention, so that I can take action.
Ah, that’s what happened to 6@6. The “soi disant” crack from Dex is beyond pathetic; it ranks up there with the folks who can’t wait to announce they don’t have a TV.
If Dex hadn’t held rock and roll in such disdain, I’m betting he wouldn’t have banished the 6@6. Fucking snob. Truly pathetic.
For no reason other than boredom, I add the comment: no, I do not hold rock n roll in disdain. I, in fact, was a rock n roll fan during the 50s, before you were born.
What I do hold in disdain is multiple extremely lengthy opening posts, all based on the same premise (a poll), with five or six of them on the front page at the same time. I offered a number of compromises, as I recall, all of which were rejected.
It’s sheer dumb luck that I looked here and saw this thread today – normally, I’d go for many weeks without looking in the Pit at all. If you want me to take action as a Moderator, hit REPORT THIS POST button. If you want me to THINK about taking action as a Moderator, hit REPORT THIS POST button.
Of course, if you’d rather just whine and complain and curse me, then open threads in the Pit.
