There is a thread posted in Cafe Society which contains open spoilers for The Last Jedi. It was purposefully put there to ruin the movie for viewers. I’m not going to link to it or identify the poster who posted it, but Chronos gave the poster a warning for jerkish behavior and closed the thread. He let the thread stay in Cafe Society, however.
Given that people are going to see the thread and possibly click on it to see why it was closed and read the spoilers, which haven’t been placed in spoiler tags, shouldn’t the thread have been removed? I’m sure people who are looking forward to seeing the movie would appreciate it.
What’s so special about Star Wars that spoilers are / were forbidden? I would have liked to read them for one. Just edit the thread to have an empty first post then include spoiler tags, done.
It’s a dick move to make a thread just for the purpose of ruining people’s anticipation for something new. Maybe after the movie comes out, you’ve got a point. And it’s not just Star Wars, it’s for any movie, TV show, book, play, etc. It’s about not being an asshole.
There is a difference between a thread that openly discusses the movie and one that is simply there to spoil it for others. That has nothing to do with Star Wars in particular. The thread in question was not an attempt to discuss the movie.
That would necessitate a mod reading the spoilers. We don’t want to be spoiled for the biggest movie of the year, either.
If someone wants to start a thread with the spoiled bits properly in tags, they are free to do so. This thread existed entirely for the purpose of spoiling the film for others. Most people do not want to be spoiled. The fact that the spoilers were also visible in the tooltip is part of the reason I cornfielded it.
I was the first mod on the scene. I deliberately did not cornfield the thread, as several of the reports (there were many reports) suggested, because I feel that it is important not only for justice to be done, but for it to be seen to be done. A moderator warning (and yes, there was a warning against the OP Terry the Tramp for this) is in some sense a message to everyone on the board, to not do the sort of thing that earned the warning. Since the thread in question is no longer visible, I’m explaining here.
The original title was not “Spoilers for The Last Jedi”. That was my edit. The original title was itself a spoiler. That was where the clearest problem was, and so I fixed that problem (as well as closing the thread and issuing the Warning). Threads containing unboxed spoilers are permitted, as long as the thread itself is labeled as containing spoilers: Anyone wishing to avoid spoilers is expected to simply not open the thread.
I failed, however, to take two things into account. First, I forgot about mouseover. The body of the OP consisted of another spoiler (different from the one in the title), which would still show up on the mouseover thread preview (you need several lines of non-spoiler text before a spoiler, to prevent this). Second, many people would naturally be curious as to why the thread was closed, and open it just to learn that (which was after all my reason for not cornfielding it in the first place). Probably what I ought to have done was to edit the body of the OP as well, but it being cornfielded is nearly as good.
I overlooked these two factors because it was late and I was on my way to bed, but it was still my mistake for which I apologize, and I thank my new colleague Spice Weasel for finishing the cleanup.
Oh, I should also mention that the events in question, if true (I don’t know if they were actual spoilers, or just things made up by the poster), would certainly be worthy of discussion, and I expect that once the “Seen it” thread shows up, there will be a lot of talk about them. That’s perfectly allowed. But this thread contained no hint of any attempt at any discussion.
He had one prior warning which was later rescinded. If you believe that he has done other things worth warning, please report those posts to let us know.
Can anyone present comment accurately (without spoiling) on whether the spoilers listed in that thread were actually true? Were they real spoilers, or made up ones?
Luckily, I didn’t see the thread before the title change (and didn’t open it before it was cornfielded. I suppose he could have revealed that Snoke is actually the adult form of a porg.
If someone reports that the spoilers in that thread were accurate, wouldn’t that of necessity spoil the movie (at least for those of us who saw the thread)?
Better just to say the OP did a jerky thing, for which he was warned.
And let the record show that it IMHO it was so jerky that a mere warning isn’t enough.
That’s a good point. I didn’t read the spoilers in that thread, therfore can’t be affected in that way. Please PM me if you can answer (generically) whether the spoilers were true.
