Diablo 3 question thread

My post #68 explains scaling. Scaling and the coefficients are the same thing. Here are all the coefficient values for Monk skills.

I was clearly on my meds when I told you to look for a weapon with two sockets. You can easily get 600 lph if the weapon as it as an affix already and has one socket. Sorry about that.

The question about how much lph is worth with respect to Dex is very hard and depends at what margin your gear is at the moment. At the very, very endgame, you can probably do so much damage even at Inferno that you won’t care very much about life return. But getting there in a straight line is very hard, since as you say, It does you no good if you die. This is less a theorycrafting question (I only heard that term recently for the first time) and more a self-assessment about what is actually happening to you. You never want to sack your DPS too much. But if you go from killing a mob in three hits instead of two but hardly die, then it’s probably worth it. This margin changed for me a few times in A2, to be honest. I actually had too much invested in long-term fight survivability. I had to cut down on defense because my damage was turning out to be inadequate. But after a few quests, the opposite was turning out to be true so I had to tinker some more.

It’s not that hard to work out optimal endgame builds with huge budgets, and all sorts of idiots do. It’s a lot harder to figure out how to get there from wherever you are, especially after you’ve made investments in gear and playstyle already. Tinker with one piece at a time and see how the game changes. I also find that it’s possible to look before you leap. Before making a big change, I like to buy an imperfect approximation of a piece of gear on the cheap just to test it out. These tend to be very inexpensive, since everyone always chases perfection. It should be a snap to buy a bargain basement blue with decent DPS and lph just to see how you like it even if it is missing key mods.

It bears repeating that it helps to have all of your numbers turned on when doing this. You might really want to see your heals before and after a switch to get a better sense of what is going on in your life pool.

If anyone’s curious, LoH vs. Lifesteal breakpoints for wizards.

Found my first set green item last night…Chantodo’s Elemental Seal (of Slashing)…forgot exactly what prefix the item has, but I do know it has increased Spectral Blade damage. Not sure what to do with it…sell it, trade it here with someone (for a DH green item), or hang on to it for when I do have a wizard that can use it. Maybe if I state the exact stats on it later tonight or tomorrow, it might be more helpful on what to do with it.

Am I behind the curve when it comes to set items…do some of you have a stockpile, or a few, or none at all? I know this is not a great OH item, but there are collectors out there who do like to get this stuff. Comments or suggestions?

I have seen a set item drop in a game exactly once, and for someone else. I have one that I bought on the AH and use occasionally for heavy MF. That’s it.

Ok, here are the stats for my Chantodo’s Elemental Seal:

+65-146 Damage (this is Good compared to other CES = +[24/72]-[37/254], Very Good Minimum, Average Maximum)
Each Hit Adds 440 Life (Great - almost the max of 448)
+7% Life (Great - this is the max)
+15 Max Arcane Power (Great - this is the max)
+10% Spectral Blade Damage (Very Good/Great - Better than the Shock Pulse; almost a max stat of 11%)
1 Empty Socket (Average/Good - some versatility here)

On the gold side of the AH, prices are inflated beyond reason, with some exceptions in the 100k-500k range, but for inferior items. On the real money side, I saw something very similar to it with a start bid of $7.99 while the other one was more in the $25-$50 range. My son (Triple Brown) said he has the other set item, but he wouldn’t use both on his Wizard and said try $7.50 real money as a starting bid…but I think I would rather stick to the gold side…I guess my next question is:

What’s the current Dollar to Gold ratio at right now?

1-) How is " TOTAL damage reduction" is calculated? I mean If a monster hit 10k at one shot, and let’s say you have 1000 All res and 10k armor. How many of the damage do you get?

2-) Different version of the first question, let’s say you have 1k all res and 10k armor again. But now you have an item that gives %5 damage reduction. How many of the damage do you get?

3-) Stupid question: I feel as if when we move, our dodge chance increases. Is it wrong?

4-) What is the ideal critical hit chance and critical damage to be able farm ACT-4 smoothly? (Don’t take other stats into consideration)

That’s really pretty good. It has no crit or AP on crit, but such is life. But I do use Spectral Blades, so I would certainly give it a second thought. The damage is rather lower than what I am looking for, but it might balance with the Blades buff. I think the prices on the gold AH have been steadily falling for good gear, actually. Set and legendary items are still priced insanely because I suspect people use the AH as an extension of their stash. People don’t want to mulch greens and golds but they don’t necessarily want to use them either, so they price them unattainably and when they don’t sell, they stay in their auction queue. That said, there is a lot of stuff actually priced to own out there.

Damage taken = (1 - armor mitigation %) * (1 - appropriate resistance mitigation) * (1 - other mitigation (i.e., melee, missile, elites, etc))

Armor mitigation = armor value / (50 * mob level + armor value)
Resistance mitigation = Resistance value / (5 * mob level + resistance)

Suppose a level 61 mob in A1 inferno. Both 10k armor and 1k all resistance provide 77% mitigation. So 10k raw damage actually hits you for 546 damage. These are pretty big mitigation stats and very low damage for Inferno, for what it’s worth.

If you add 5% damage reduction into the mix, you just multiply this result by 95%. This gives you 519 damage total.

To my knowledge moving does not affect dodge chance whatsoever. Nor is there any optimal crit chance/damage independent of other skills. It depends entirely on your class and the way you deal damage.

I am going to be playing with the same computer but on a different wifi network. Is this going to trigger some battlenet security feature, when it detects a different IP address than usual, and lock my account? If so, what can I do about it?

Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. Usually when it does I have to answer a question, but it only happened to me once. I would think same computer GUID should make it not be concerned though, for me it was new computer new IP.

Update 1.04 now live since 8/21/12.
Paragon levels explained.

Better? Yeah. Great? Ummmm…not sure yet. It was fun running with Chronos, TomScud and my son last night though…we pretty much torched Inferno Act 1…we should now run through A2 soon and make some progression on A3 where the Ramparts are my sticking point…
