Dick Simon Trucking Logo

A couple of years back, the Dick Simon Trucking logo (seen all over in Washington state, and prolly the west coast) was a skunk holding a pirate flag. Since then, it has changed to the same skunk holding a flag, but with the pirate logo replaced with hearts and flowers with the phrase ‘Sweet Simon’.

What’s up? Did he lose a bet? Bad PR company? The old logo was pretty cool. The new one, well, sort of unsettling…

Haven’t seen the logo out here in Hoosierland, but it sounds to me like Dick found a sweetie and his pirating days are over.

Sweet Simon, the skunk in the company logo, started life as a prank played by a truck painter. “This was in the days when I was still driving a truck personally,” says Dick Simon. "I had a brand new black tractor that I wanted to have decorated with custom-painted pinstriping.
“At that time, a painter in Salt Lake City was so creative and so well-respected that people let him decorate trucks without giving instructions. They’d just take whatever he produced. Other truckers trusted him, so I did too. When I went to pick up my truck, it had skunks painted on both doors. I was furious, but my wife thought they were cute. Besides, I had a load that had to move right then.”

“During that trip, the response from people on the road was so positive that I cooled down and decided that I could live with Sweet Simon. He’s been a part of the company ever since.”

Based on the “prank” origins and the absence of a mention, here, I would guess that the pirate flag was a result of and holdover from the original prank that has been made “nicer” in just the last few years.
