When I got back to work today (after 6 days off) there was an envelope with my name on it but my company’s address. In it was a 4 page letter explaining that if I had purchased MS software between Dec 96 and Dec 02 in my state that I could submit a claim against Microsoft for their non-competitive practices and presumably overpriced software. There were also 2 pages of forms to fill out listing the name of the software I might have purchased and the dates and another page of instructions for the forms.
The weird thing is the last time I purchased anything from MS was Windows95 in 1995. I didn’t register it so I’m not sure how they got my name to send me this letter. I’ve never registered any of their products. Nobody else that I know of received a letter.
I’m sure that loads of people don’t register their store bought MS products, so how are they going to tell the real claims from the posers?
I don’t plan on submitting any forms (I really don’t feel like doing any more paperwork than I have too, my life is complicated enough without this), but I will keep it for my scrapbook of memories. This was a rather famous case and I’d like to have a legit souvenier to hold on to so I can cackle at them when I’m eighty and toothless and pinch myself for not buying MS stock when I knew they were on their way up.
I’m not interested if you’ve got a beef with MS, just curious if anybody else had started receiving these letters.
