Did Anyone Other Than kellibelli Notice I Was Missing

Don’t get me wrong; I was actually surprised that I got any comment. But I was curious about this. This site has such a large number of posters, I was curious what characteristic makes you “unforgettable.”

Guy! You’re back! What happened? Where were you?

Um…who’re you?

C’mon! SOMEONE had to say it!

Who’s this kellibelli?

Oh, he’s just some Guy…

Welcome back, bud!

God is my co-pilot. Blame Him.

If memory serves me Guy… one of my very first posts was on a thread about superman vs green lantern. You replied to one of my comments, and I have adored you ever since.

So…where the hell were you?

Actually, it seems like a lot of posters were (or are) missing for a while.

ARG220 - Resurfaced on a GD thread on Jesus.

Cessandra - Still missing.

Drain Bead - I remember seeing one post by her this week.

Eden - She posted recently on Eve’s thread in the BBQ Pit.

Eve - She disappeared for awhile but now seems to be back regularly.

Krispy Original - He recently rejoined us.

Michelle - I know she was on vacation, but she’s only posted a couple of times since returning.

OpalCat - She’s only posted once or twice this week.

Satan - He had disappeared until he posted a response to a Farsong thread earlier today.

Of course, I’ve probably missed at least a dozen others. I realize that most of these people have posted at least once, but that’s probably why I noticed their earlier absense. Undoubtedly, there are others who have disappeared completely.

I’ve been worried that during the recent crash, some valued regulars might have moved on to another board.

Another board? What other board? There are other boards?

Were you in prison?

DHR

Don’t feel bad, Guy. I was gone for weeks and no one noticed.

Um, everyone is forgetting the OP.

What does make someone memorable? Kellibelli mentioned why she remembered Guy - something personal about the response she got.

Is there some generic trait or traits that lead to unforgettability?

A catchy sig might be one thing. Of the list below by Little Nemo, Michelle is the only regular name. (Okay, Eve, but somehow that stands out to me.) Whereas anyone who knows there’s a poster named Satan is bound to pay attention at least a little.

Personality traits also are good triggers. Trolls are really good at getting noticed. A person with a sharp wit and the ability to find the right lines at the right time is liable to be noticed and remembered. Or someone who posts on every thread.

Frankly, there are a lot of registered members, and we get new ones in batches, it’s understandable that an oldtimer will disappear for a while and when returning, a newbie won’t know they’ve been missing. Meanwhile the other regs didn’t miss because (a)most people don’t post every day, but in spurts, so some gaps are expected; (b) if a gap starts getting long, it may slip people’s minds because “out of sight, out of mind”; (c) the remaining regs are too busy tangled up in the topics they are discussing to keep tabs on everyone they’ve encountered before; (d) who has time to post to every thread? Most likely people just assume their buddy is hanging in other threads, in other forums, or just lurking a while.

Of course one way to get remembered is to be a know-it-all who posts long-winded answers to every question no matter what the topic. At least that’s my plan.

Or you can pick someone and see how many posts you can mention their name.

Michelle. (Okay, I’m going to have to knock that off - she’s going to think I’m stalking her or something.)

[amusing myself whether anyone else gets it or not]

Actually, my list was pretty haphazard. In several cases, I’ll admit it was seeing a post that made me think “where the heck has [insert name here] been all this time? I hadn’t seen a post from them in weeks.” So it was their reappearance that highlighted their disappearance.

It’s like the hound of Baskerville. Anyone can notice something unusual happening but it takes a truly observant person to notice something usual not happening.

There’s an AOL forum with the subject of author Harry Turtledove. At one time, Turtledove himself was a regular on the board, posting daily and participating in discussions about his work and science fiction or history in general. The forum became fairly active with a couple of dozen postings everyday. At one point Harry dropped out (he later explained it was due to a computer problem) and no one noticed for six weeks. So I guess if Harry Turtledove can disappear from a Harry Turtledove forum without being noticed, it’s no surprise that any of us can disappear from the much larger board here with making a ripple.

This is one of those questions like when the wife asks, “Does this dress make me look fat?” or, “Do you think she’s prettier than me?”, right?

kelli–well, thanks to the hacker, I was able to take Cecil’s advice and actually get some work done. But I couldn’t loose that nagging feeling that I was missing something, and that something was the Dope. I’m glad to be back.

Oh, and speaking of Green Lantern (hijack my own thread here), didja ever see the “Superman” episode with Green Lantern AND Sinsetro? Rockin! Even if it was the Kyle Rainor GL.

I’m sorry, Guy, I didn’t notice.

Sigh, how could I have (not) missed that?

Cessandra

I would’ve gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for those meddling kids!

It’s okay, Cess. Aren’t you busy with midterms now? Or spring break?

Heh, I was being cute, Guy. I’ve barely been here for two months or so.

Cessandra

I would’ve gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for those meddling kids!

Whoa! Now I’m embarrassed that I didn’t notice YOU were missing.

How did we survive before the Internet?

I didn’t notice you were gone. But that’s because I was gone too.

But I remember you from before I left, back in the day, and I’m glad you’re here.

Your Quadell

Oh sure, it’s alright for some people to go flitting around, disappearing and reappearing and such. Well listen up you little whippersnappers, some of us have to come to this board every day and post five or ten or even fifteen messages just to keep this board alive. Why back in my day we knew the value of dedication and hard work. Didn’t have time for no lollygaggin’. Kids today. I blame that damn Roosevelt. Mutter, mutter, mumble. Zzzzzzzz.

Seriously, it’s great to see all of you back. Stick around awhile.
