I’m posting this here because the question is prompted by something I saw on the Colbert Report, and because, really, isn’t politics in America all about entertainment when you come down to it?
Anyway, I caught just a bit of the Colbert Report last night, and what I saw involved Colbert prefacing a joke by saying something like “After all, in today’s speech, Bush said that the Iraqis shouldn’t be afraid the Democrats won, and that the terrorists shouldn’t be glad the Democrats won.”
Did Bush say something like this in a speech yesterday?
Apparently, he did say something along those lines. Sorry, I don’t have a link handy.
On roughly the same subject, I was listening to a local call-in radio show last night on which a female caller, voice actually trembling with fear, talked about her belief that the first thing the Democrats were going do was to sit down with all the Al-Quaida terrorists and try to talk them out of attacking us, and that she was terrified that “now we’re going to get hit again”, meaning, apparently, another 9/11-type attack.
And this would have been a very gracious and statesman-like statement from GWB …
had he and Cheney not spent the entire campaign impugning the bravery and loyalty of every single Democrat (not just the ones running for office). Even Nixon didn’t stoop that low.
No cite, and I’ve Godwin’ed myself out of the discussion.
By the way, I thought Colbert’s on-show reaction Tuesday night to the Republican losses was hilarious. Colbert’s got it nailed!
Exactly! It’s an insidious way of trying to give everyone the idea that Democrats aren’t going to be good for homeland security, Iraq or the troops. By trying to quell supposed fears, he’s putting a bug in the brains of that portion of the population that needs everything spoonfed to them. I’d be willing to bet there are a bunch of people who are thinking, “Ooh, I never thought of it that way!”
It’s like he’s trying to create the idea that people are panicking and the terrorists are rejoicing by appearing to “calm everyone down”.
I believe the invitations to a meeting in the Secret Senate Boom-Boom Room went out yesterday and Nancy Pelosi is shopping for just the right bustier but needs to know if Osama bin Laden prefers leather or latex.
What’s really head-slappingly stupid is that five minutes earlier he said this:
It takes a special kind of stupid to pledge an end to partisan differences and then follow it up by implying that the terrorists were joyful at seeing a Democratic majority in Congress…
Don’t be depressed Stephen. You know what will cheer you up?
