If so, why hasn’t the press been all over him like ugly on an ape? After all, had Ahnood done this, CNN would loop the tape every three minutes!
Why hasn’t the press been crowing over this over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over? Isn’t this the sort of thing they live for?
I remember this incident, although not the name of the person who did it. The impression I got when I first heard about it was that it was a simple slip of the tongue. Freudian slip? I have no way of knowing.
I hope this isn’t bad, but I have to admit I thought it was a bit funny in an incredibly-horrific-faux-paux social disaster kinda way.
So when Trent Lott makes a statement that could be construed as racist, and apologizes for it four times, this is definite proof that the entire Republican party is composed of racists,
When Bustamante uses a blatant racial slur, and apologizes for it, the subject is dropped immediately.
Or maybe it was a simple slip of the tongue. You know, like “Barney Fag”.
This story made the rounds (as in, part of a long AP profile of Bustamante that ran in many, many national newspapers) about three weeks ago. Didn’t have much traction, it would appear.
By the way, I think the OP was a cite from Newsmax, because I was linked to that site when I first heard of this a few weeks ago. FWIW, and I’m not attempting to rationalize his so-called “slip of the tongue,” many of the unions Bustamante was citing in the speech had the word “Negro” in them.
A story has “traction” when the press decides to give it “traction”. If the press likes a politician, they won’t give a story “traction”. If the press hates a politician, they will invent “traction” for the story.
It’s worse than the illuminati! It’s the evil liberal media, that controls all flow of information; yet somehow the Republicans still manage to win most elections. The liberal media must be incompetent too!
The liberal media claims always remind of how the Jews were accused of controlling the world, yet were unable to prevent the holocaust.
Press- oh, never mind ,I had a comment about the LA Times. Anyway,I read this every day (no others here) & Bustamonte’s slur/error has NOT been mentioned since the recall race began. Gee, I wonder why.
It did make the press. It was a simple slip of the tongue, and Bustamante was very obviously upset by his mistake afterwards and apologized profusely. It is not in any way comparable to Lott’s statement. Lott fully intended to say what he said, Bustamante did not. Bustamante meant to say “Negro Labor Party”, but unfortunately said “Nigger Labor Party” instead. I don’t see how anyone could view it as anything but a Freudian Slip. I think the reason no one is harping on it now is because there’s no issue here.
Like Revtim said, it would almost be funny if it wasn’t such an awful thing.
And was dropped almost immediately. As Dogface says, traction is what the press decides is important.
Lott apologized profusely as well. In his case, it did not get dropped.
Lott explained several times what he meant by what he said, and it had no racist component at all. Since he is a Republican, his explanations were ignored. Bustamante is a Democrat. Therefore, his explanations were taken at face value, and the subject dropped.
Since the situations are analogous, and Lott was forced to resign from his positions of leadership, shouldn’t Bustamante drop out of the CA governor’s race?
Sauce for the gander, if the Democrats mean what they say about race.
Shodan, are you telling me that the only crime Lott committed was a simple slip of the tongue?
And next, will you please tell me exactly how this liberal media conspiracy works? And will you tell whether this conspiracy is operated out of Area 51 or Atlantis? And what exactly do the Freemasons have to do with it?
[quote]
Alice Huffman, the NAACP state conference president, said Bustamante should be forgiven for the slip and judged by his entire career, not that one incident.
“He apologized to everyone,” Huffman said. “He really went overboard, like it was life or death. I think he handled it as well as he can. Will people forget it? No. Will people use it against him? Yes. My assumption is that people who want to use it have something against him in the first place. But he’s a good soul.”
What Lott said was NOT a slip of the tongue. What Bustamante said WAS a slip of the tongue.
Lott was speaking to a roomful of people likely to be friendly toward the sentiment he expressed. Bustamante was speaking to a roomful of African Americans.
Lott has a long history of taking political actions opposed by the majority of African Americans. Bustamante has a long history of taking political actions supported by the majority of African Americans.
Lott was dropped by the Republican party because such apparently explicit racism is a real liability for them. Bustamante has not, and will not, be dropped by the Democratic party because there’s no apparently explicit racism – just an honest slip of the tongue.
This is a smear campaign, dredging up an issue for which the NAACP has already offered him absolution, in hopes that some ignorant voters won’t bother to get all the facts and instead will deny Bustamante their vote. Honest conservatives will do well to repudiate such contemptible tactics.
