So this mysterious group of alternative channel, one brain cell voters are going to hear one meme that Harris lied about working at McDonalds in college - from her opponent, as opposed to any sort of independent, credible source. And somehow that will be enough to overcome all the blanket of information about how much Trump lies about EVERYTHING.
“Oh, golly, Harris might have lied about working at McDonalds when she was in college because of some populist cred, so I guess I’ll just have to vote for Trump, who lied 150 times in the previous debate. Who lied about the size of the crowd at his Presidential inauguration. Who lies about having ever met E. Jean Carrroll that woman he raped. Who lied about…”
I mean seriously?
If Trump manages to trot this out at the debate, she should just say something about meaningless distractions from a man who would never do something so common as work at McDonalds. Let the double entendre do the work. Then say “Let’s get back to the issues important to the American people, like bringing down the cost of groceries, and how Trump’s tariffs will make prices higher.”
We’ve seen a number of suggestions about how she should respond if he brings that up. My answer is that she should ignore it if he brings it up or if the mods ask her about it (at least as a followup to his ramblings), similar to your response, that she should essentially brush it off and get back to the actual question.
However, I think if, as soon as Trump brings it up, the other camera catches Harris mid eye roll, it’ll make for a great meme. We got a lot of mileage out of Fauci’s facepalm and I think we could get even more from a well timed, memable Harris eye roll.
In 2027, when we are in the camps and fighting each other for the juiciest piece of rat, we will ask each other why Kamala didn’t have the courage to produce the evidence that she worked at McDonald’s and avoid the collapse of civilization.
“Well, maybe a Mr Moneybags like trump never had a real job growing up, but I know everyone else, just like me, had to get a job if we wanted anything in life.”
Seriously, a significant percentage of Gen X middle class kids had jobs like this growing up in the 80s. It’s utterly unremarkable that Harris had one too, and McDonalds is one of the largest employers of those very same people.
Is the story any better with her working at McDonalds, vs any other similar job? “Oh, I would have voted for the McDonald’s job person, but she worked at Pizza Hut? Screw that elitist!”
I wonder if all these people, especially those in the media, have checked their own resumes before talking about hers. If they push the McDonald’s thing, sooner or later were bound to find out that some of these people did the same thing, for the same reason. That is, when applying to be a host on Fox and Friends, maybe they didn’t feel it necessary to mention the fast food place they worked at 30 years earlier.
The Trolly problem: If you don’t counter-argue, a certain percentage of people will assume it’s true. If you do counter-argue, that percentage will change, but you don’t know if the change will be an increase or a decrease. What do you do, hotshot?
@filmore the answer to your question is that yes, she did work at MacDonalds earlier in her career, and the confirmation for this is the fact that she has confirmed it.
Most people won’t lie about a McD’s job because it’s pretty much irrelevant to most people. However, that’s not the same for politicians. Politicians often say things to curry favor with potential voters. In this case, she made the claim when she was with striking McD’s workers. It wasn’t just a casual comment made among friends. It was a comment made to gain favor with the striking workers, and with workers in general. There’s generally no benefit to a regular person lying about working at McD’s, but there is a benefit to a politician lying about working at McD’s when trying to get the voting support of those workers. I’m not saying Harris is lying. Rather, I’m saying why it’s important for her, a politician, to make it clear that this is not a lie.
I think if Trump made a similar claim, most Democrats would press him for proof. For instance, if he was making a speech to the metro workers in NYC and said “When I was a kid, I worked in the 5th Ave ticket booth”, most Democrats would think that he’s lying. They’d believe that he said that just to endear himself to the workers. I don’t think they say we should all trust that he worked there and wave it off as a trivial job from his past that he wouldn’t lie about.
One thing I wonder is if she may have worked in fast food, but perhaps not at McD’s. Maybe she worked at some other place like Scotties or Burger King. Perhaps she might have bent the truth a bit and said it was McD’s because she was around workers from McD’s. In any case, proving her work history should be a relatively straight forward task. She doesn’t have to, but not providing it means the speculation will continue.
If she worked at Burger King, should could have said that. (And trump, would still say she’s lying.). Why would a politician lie and say McDonalds instead of Burger King? Does McDonald’s have more street cred or something?
If Trump said it, we’d know he was lying because that’s what he does when he says things.
Harris would never be able to prove that she worked there to the satisfaction of the trolls, so she’s doing the right thing by not feeding the trolls. Obama finally gave up and provided his actual birth certificate and even that wasn’t enough for the trolls. Some W2 from 40 years ago that said she worked for some franchisee is certainly not going to do it either.
This issue would already be gone if some people didn’t keep posting to this thread to keep it alive.
