Several weeks ago a Jewish person started a thread cursing Paramount for premiering “Enterprise” on Yom Kippur because he/she felt under his/her interpretation of the law he/she could not tape the episode or ask anyone else to tape it on his/her behalf. I can’t find the thread and I’m curious with the premiere come and gone what happened.
Man, that bites. Of course, most UPN stations will replay it this weekend. Do you feel you can tape on the Sabbath?

Question: If they set up the VCR 3 days ahead so it tapes (works) on Yom Kippur, does that violate the law against work?
I think people are idiots.
I find it disgusting that someone would be so pretentious as to be angry with a cable company for not scheduling a show to fit with their own availability. Why be angry with UPN? Why not just cut to the chase and blame God personally for not letting everything fall into place in your life.
Jeez.
Well, one day a year, given that jews are a significant monority population AND that this is the day that even many non-practicing jews follow the rules doesn’t seem unreasonable. Esp. given that the percentage of Star Trek fans who are jewish is probably higher than our representation in the population as a whole. (Jews and sci-fi fans both tend to be amongst the better educated and financially well-off; also Star Trek has always appealed strongly to minority groups – especially once you find out that both Captain Kirk AND Mr. Spock are jews.)

Well, not being extremely orthodox, I taped it. And I’ll pass the tape on to a friend.
I’m not sure about the strict Jewish Law interpretation. A tradition in the old days of Orthodoxy was to hire a non-Jew to do some basic tasks for you on Shabbos. I’d think that asking someone to tape it would be about the same thing.
I didn’t think twice about UPN’s scheduling (so much for us Jews controlling the media!). I get more annoyed with tests scheduled at my kid’s school where @10% of the population is Jewish. Many teachers seem to think that the kids are hanging out on a holiday, instead of spending time on a holy day. And my hospital scheduled a medical staff meeting on the eve of Rosh HaShanah. Hey this is not a professional football team, it’s a flippin doctor’s staff! Just dumb or … what?
As a Sophomore Cadet here @ TAMU, I’m not permitted to have a tv in my room, so I had a friend who isn’t in the Corps tape it.
And of course the Dumbfuck forgot to.
For some reason the Station here doesn’t repeat ST on the weekends, so I’m gonna drive up to Grandma’s tomorrow in Ft. Worth and watch it there…

From what I remember of the thread, the poster specifically SAID the timing just worked out that way for some higher reason. IIRC declined offers from others who taped the show on that date because it would be cheating, if spirit if not in fact. No anger, no gritching–just a bit of rueful acceptance for the way it shook down, i.e. “I really want to watch it but later/re-runs will be okay”.
If someone can access and cite the original thread I’d appreciate it. I’ll keep trying through the logoffs and lock-ups. Understand your point, Gorgon Heap but the poster truly didn’t view the timing that way–or at least that wasn’t the way I read it.

I did get to see the pilot the following Sunday. I have been watching Enterprise every Wednesday since. So far, I’m impressed… much better than I thought.
BTW, Otto, I never curse. 
Anyway, Gorgon Heap, if you go back and read the thread, you’d see that I was just mildly annoyed. And no, I wasn’t expecting UPN to specially accomodate me. I just wanted to kvetch a bit, that’s all.
