Different layout

Have I missed an announcement? Tracking and reply look different, numbers of posts listed is smaller.

Your layout depends on your chosen theme. Of which there are nine. Which are independently maintained by the theme writers, not by Discourse or SDMB.

Without knowing which one you’ve chosen, little more can be said. Your choice is on your profile page under Preferences >> Interface.

Yeah I thought the post count button on the bottom right suddenly looked smaller.

It is. And reply is an arrow now.

As LSLGuy said, it’s your theme. I’m using Straightdope Light in desktop mode (and forcing desktop mode on my Android tablet) and nothing has changed.

I’m guessing this is the same issue as I was just about to start a thread for. Suddenly the scroll bar is waaaay over to the right and the tracking options are no longer with it. While I didn’t like the way the tracking options disappeared from below the scroll bar depending on where you are in the thread, at least they were there.

Having to scroll all the way to the bottom to track a thread means the board is going to assume you’ve read that far, instead of reading a few posts and then tracking it so you can finish later.

FWIW, I’m using Vincent, but I think it’s the same with, at least some of, the others.

To determine or change Theme:

  • Click on your Avatar next to the Menu. (Upper Right Corner)
  • Select Profile (The last symbol on the right)
  • Select Preferences again :gear: (The gear symbol)
  • Click on Interface. (Should be the second to last choice.)

Please indicate what Theme you’re using and preferably, which browser.

I’m also moving this to Site Feedback as this is more a question for there.

Straight Dope Light. Not sure of browser. This just happened recently and Doom noticed it also.

BTW: No change I’ve noticed to Discourse Classic.

No change to Straight Dope Light for me.

On a Win10 PC with Edge.

Folks asking technical questions should also mention whether they’re on a phone, a tablet, or a real computer. And which sort: i-thingy, Android, Mac, Chromebook, PC, etc.

Phone, android.

Aha! On a phone, everything is different than on a tablet or PC. That is really key info to have.

I’m on Android mobile and also noticed the post count thing (xx/yy) is smaller today.

Its pur phones. And it doesn’t say reply any more, theres an arrow.
Magic!

Not only on phones, I have the same issues on my Win 11 laptop, Chrome browser, Vincent theme.

Likewise. I tried switching to Straight Dope Light but it is hideous. I will put up with the moved tracking options.

nevermind

I sincerely wish that whoever is “improving” this stuff would stop and leave things alone. The “tracking” option in Straight Dope Light that used to appear at the bottom of the scroll bar on the right has now disappeared. It’s been replaced by an arrow meaning “Reply”. The “tracking” option is now at the very bottom of the posts.

This is a really stupid change in the UI. The “reply” option is available throughout the thread, there’s absolutely no need for it below the scroll bar. But OTOH if you want to change the tracking option of a thread, either to upgrade or downgrade its tracking priority or mute it entirely, it’s very useful to have that option immediately available below the scroll bar, where it used to be.

Moving the “tracking” option was the kind of terrible change that makes one wonder, “what were they thinking?”

And, to reiterate what I said earlier, that means if you start reading a thread and want to track it with the intention of coming back later to finish it, scrolling down to the bottom to track it means you’re going to mark the entire thread, up to that point, as being read.

I didn’t like the way the tracking button wouldn’t pop up under the scroll bar until you were a few posts into the thread and disappeared when you got close to the bottom, but I’d rather have that than this.

I hate it when websites get a bit too dynamic and actively move things while you’re using them. Like slideshows/carousals that move the previous/next buttons each time you click on them instead of keeping them locked in one spot so you don’t have to find them and move the mouse each time.

That’s a bot defense. More annoying for people than useful against actual modern bots, but there you go.
