I recently joined in a line dance jam with this spontaneous group of 20 somethings in a parking lot to this really cool, hip hop grind, line dance… it’s the new Electric Slide. A Toyota pounding bass and this rather rythmic song by some rap dude… and I was actually keepin’ up. Pretty funkin’ awesome.
(Also recently listened to some T. Pain for the first time. Personally I’d rather listen to Bone Thuggs n Harmony.)
I stumbled across White Whale on eMusic a while ago, and it’s been mad love ever since. That’s a link to the Wikipedia page, which has links to their MySpace profile and their official website (which will not load for me, grrr). They only have one album, but it’s absolutely wonderful. I don’t know how to describe it – indie sea chanteys maybe?
Anyway, my favorite track off it is “We’re Just Temporary Ma’am.” Or maybe “O’ William, O’ Sarah.”
They have a new song playing on the radio, these days, called Sorry, and it’s the best I’ve heard from them!
(The running gag at the radio station is that they’re probably apologizing for Crazy Bitch.)
I’ve also been listening to the New Album by The Cult, Born into This. It’s a very noble experiment by the Cult. A worthy album. I like Tiger Burning in the Sun.
It has apparently become my job to come along whenever Big Bad Voodoo Lou recommends Jenny Lewis and agree with him. Of course, he neglected to mention how smokin’ hot she so at least I get to do that.
I started listening to Josh Ritter a couple of months ago after hearing him interviewed on NPR. His * The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter* is my favorite disc from the last six months or so.
Last July 4th in Lake Tahoe we saw a bluesman from Texas named Guy Forsyth. Brilliant show. Highly recommended.
Great taste, as always. She is INCREDIBLY smokin’ hot. My girl and I have seen her live twice now – once solo with the Watson Twins, where she wore a super-short, silver, sparkly minidress, and once with Rilo Kiley, where she wore kind of a yellow bodysuit with some kind of translucent tights or hose. We were both transfixed! Jenny exudes a raw sex appeal, but there is still a wholesomeness and even innocence to her, rather than grinding her sexuality right in your face like the Pussycat Dolls. And unlike those girls, Jenny has the voice of an angel.
I found The Bambi Molesters doing a random google search, just going by “band name!”-ishness. Surprise, there was really such a band! And they turned out to be good!
Actually it points to Giant Sand, the amazing band with the 30-year career that Calexico started as a mere side project of. Check out Chore of Enchantment for starters, a killer record.
HazelNut I remember when Kathleen Edwards’ song Six O’Clock News was on the radio for a while in 2005. That’s a great song. I’d also recommend Laura Viers. Saltbreaker is my favorite of her songs.
I haven’t discovered any new music since my favorite torrent site went down in October, but I have suggestions.
M. Ward <— myspace linkage. I’ve heard him described as ‘folktronica’. Check out ‘Chinese Translation’, its what got me hooked on him.
Bocephus King <---- moar myspace linkage. Lists only his most recent music which I’m not familiar with, but ‘That Ain’t Love’ sounds great. I own one of his albums The Blue Sickness and love it to death, but I can’t find any samples on his myspace or website.
I’d second Josh. He’s huge here, seen him live a rake of times and interviewed him once (he’s a sweetheart). I’d also recommend Golden Age of Radio and The Animal Years albums.
Agreed. Jenny Lewis is ridiculously hot in a plain way. I can’t put my finger on why, but I see it too.
Here’s a few I’ve recently run across:
Sara Barseilles - “Little Voice” (it’s just really good “girl with piano” stuff)
Paramore - “Riot!” (it’s a blast. The song “Misery Business” is one of my new favorites)
The Clientele - “God Save the Clientele” (I listened to this a while ago, so I can’t really describe it. But I picked it up again and plan to listen to it soon)
