Discussion of superbowl ads/halftime?

She played just fine from my perspective. And others.

H.E.R. plays scene-stealing guitar solo with Usher at Super Bowl LVIII | Guitar World

I didn’t think the solo was all that impressive as far as guitar solos go. But I was not familiar with the song, so likely wasn’t paying sufficient attention.

I’d never heard of her before. But I got serious Prince vibes.

it sounded extremel “rehearsed” to me … in the way that should the show be repeated, she would play the solo identically.

but that is just my feeling …

My understanding is that SB halftime shows are always pre-recorded.

It had not occurred to me that it was pre-recorded until I saw the solo. She moved her hands properly from my perspective (you’ll be shocked to hear I’m a guitarist) as far as the notes I heard. But something about it seemed like a mime of a solo.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting playing the solo was beyond her skill. It just didn’t “look live” to me.

Yes, they’ll do a live play the day before and synch to that.

Wait, always? Paul McCartney wasn’t live? Like, none of the previous years have done it live?

Yeah, and the Justin Timberlake/Janet Jackson bruhaha was not live?

lol I can’t speak for every year of the Super Bowl, just what they do now.

Yeah, it definitely looked mimed to me, especially the end of the solo, but who knows.

I was unaware of H.E.R until I saw her on Super Bowl 55… sorry LV… where she killed America The Beautiful.

Most shows are lip-synched/pantomimed, but there are exceptions. Notably, the Rolling Stones, Beyonce (for vocals), and Prince (during a rain storm, no less).

“When executives offered him the chance to lip-sync, he purportedly replied, “I’m Prince, I’m gonna play live” (via The Ringer).”

Alicia Keys screeching off key before getting it together suggests that this year’s show was very much live.

Honestly I’d suspect it is more difficult for a performer to sync a show like that than to perform it. These are performers who put on long live concerts regularly. Doing something live is in their skill sets. Syncing is a different task.

I do not doubt that it has been done but I’d WAG it is not done more often than it is.

Yeah - that DID sound like a missed note.

Another vote for “Stupid Canadian broadcasters, making us watch ads we’ve been watching for six months, and depriving us of the good ads that Americans get.”

So we end up with commercial breaks full of nothing but promos for upcoming CTV shows, and Crave, CTV’s streaming service that nobody subscribes to, nor wants to.

I want the Budweiser Clydesdales, dammit! I want Schwartzeneggar saying, “neighbaaaa.” I want Jennifer Aniston. I want Beyonce. I want the DumKings.

What I don’t want is, “You can stream all your favourite shows on Crave, starting at only $9.95 a month.” Over and over and over.

If this isn’t an issue in our next parliamentary election, it should be. And I’m serious.

That second link says it’s mimed, though to a real day-before live recording (although our thread seems to contest that all Super Bowl halftime shows are this way, so take it with a grain of salt, although to me it does look a little off. Could be the way the sound and video sync, who knows.)

We should offer a final caveat (before the BIG GUITAR conspiracy theorists take to YouTube) that – as is the case with all Super Bowl halftime shows – the performance was indeed mimed, albeit to a live rehearsal recording.

Just watched the solo again. Can anyone explain to me what was spectacular about it? Just impressed me as standard rock guitar noodling. I mean, it was fine. But I’ve been hearing hair bands play that sort of thing for decades. What made anyone think of Prince?

Gerry Dee is a hilarious comedian. You telling me (and of course you are not) he couldn’t put something together funnier than that “unscripted” Doritos ad?

“You woulda won a million dollars of you had only tried one flavour of Lays”. I’m sure. That’s at least forty times what that POS cost to make.

But it’s sure good to know about 5G networks and submarine ships selling bowls. I don’t think any of the Canadian commercials were noteworthy. I only give a pass to the Hunter Steel commercial since it has been on for so many years.
