At one of my duty stations in the navy, there was a position that monitored a manual Morse channel. The equipment was simple, an R-390A HF radio with a pair of earphones and a manual typewriter. One of the guys who staffed it would come in, put on the earphones and position his hands on the typewriter, then literally fall asleep. The incoming code would go directly from his ears to his fingers without passing through higher functions of his brain. It was fascinating to watch.
He was extremely religious. During his breaks he would sit in the same chair and read a Bible in his lap, starting over when he reached the end. Nor did he have much to do with us more… colorful sailors. This meant he had to be pranked, although not by me (I swear). The channel had a pattern, 45 seconds of transmitting then 15 seconds of silence, rinse repeat.
A mic on a long cord was cut into the AF side of the radio and somebody was on it, around the corner out of sight. After a couple hours somebody got on the mic and a spotter in his view watched the victim. The silent period started, five seconds elapsed then, “This is God. Due to lack of interest I am cancelling the Earth tomorrow,” a second before the traffic started.
He started typing for five or ten seconds, paused, and his eyes opened wide. With a large yell, he tore the headphones off and leaped out of his chair, pointing at the radio. After that they tried to get him calmed down, demonstrating with the mi in view, “See? You can hear me now through the cans,” but he had the shakes so bad they had to put somebody else on the position for the rest of the watch.

The most I’ve carried numerically was ¥100,000 on Okinawa for a specific purchase on the local economy, about $800 at the time.

I won $1,000 in the state lottery. Since I very rarely buy lottery tickets and only five ot ten bucks worth even then I figure I’m still playing the winnings.
It means underneath each key is a little device that’s made up of two pieces of plastic or metal, usually plastic, that are hinged in the middle so it “scissors” and holds up the key. When you press a key it depresses the rubber piece in the center that activates the switch for the key. It’s considered a type of membrane keyboard.
Mechanical keyboards, OTOH have a spring-loaded “switch” underneath each key. The spring holds the key up, and when you press down, it causes two metal plates to contact each other and register as a keypress on the keyboard’s circuit.
The other major type of keyboard tech is the “membrane keyboard,” in which there are two layers of a membrane underneath all of the keys across the keyboard. When you press a key the two membranes touch and register as a keypress.
Hey, congrats! As a teenager I won my dad’s Super Bowl office pool despite knowing nothing about football, and won $150.
The most cash I’ve ever had on me was $300-400 or so, after I closed a bank account and asked for the money in cash. I had about that much on me some years later when I was running a fundraiser for a local nonprofit.
Mine was $200 but it is a gaming keyboard so that’s probably a factor. I’m really serious about my keyboards. It’s probably psychological. I use a membrane keyboard at the office because that’s what was provided to me, and I’ve never had an issue with it. But the feel of typing on a mechanical keyboard is more satisfying somehow. And I find with the Brown switches I’m a more accurate typist.
I chose the name I like best, but since it’s also a Jewish relative’s name, I can’t use it until she’s dead. I would adhere to this tradition not because I care, but because other relatives would care.
The most cash I’ve ever had on me in real money was when I was treasurer of the local elementary school PTO and we had a few tens of thousands of dollars at the end of the day that I had to make sure got back to the bank.
The largest number of units of cash I’ve ever held was someone else’s Zimbabwean bill.
So the mechanical keyboard is actually closing an electrical circuit when a key is pressed, while the membrane types are in some other fashion causing a bit of electronic info? Or are they all closing a circuit, but because the membrane types involve a membrane they’re not considered to be “mechanical”?
– I’m not wild about any of the names, though I don’t think I strongly dislike any of them, except maybe for Rue which looks to me like I’d be telling the kid that I regretted her existence. Can my spouse and I discuss this issue?
The latter, as I understand it. From this website:
I’ve had to have the keyboards replaced in two laptops in the last few years; both of them were membrane keyboards, which seem to be the standard in most laptops.
“Estelle” is doing surprisingly well in the Golden Girls poll. I admit that was my vote, but apparently I wasn’t the only one. It’s a good name. Definitely not common, but doesn’t sound very exotic either. I’ve yet to meet an Estelle in my life.
What someone is paid and how much a boss can increase their pay is much more complicated than “do they deserve it?” Do I have an unlimited budget here?
Not only don’t i have an unlimited budget, HR has extremely strict rules and guidelines around raises. I’d try to get her what i could, but without looking at the HR tables, i don’t even know what that would be.
I’d also be looking for whether she wants a promotion, which is actually easier to arrange than a large raise.
Yeah, my reaction was first ‘I’m going to give her as much as I can afford’ and my second was ‘is her working-with-people as good as her productivity, or at least no worse than most people’s?’ – I can imagine situations in which her productivity is coming at the cost of somebody else’s. But if that’s not what’s going on, then the budget is an issue; though I’d need to bear in mind that if she quits I might need to hire two people to replace her.
– @puzzlegal, would the promotion also come with a significantly higher salary? would it promote her out of the area in which she’s working that well?
Bit surprised that 3 people had 4-5 True Loves in their lifetimes; I simply cannot imagine finding more than the One I have. But as I said in the poll blurb how one defines what TL is is up to them.
