Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

Digital mammogram is the way to go, no pain, no strange position, and thank heavens for no ooky prep drink.

Well, there’s a week of restrictions on what to eat. I gather different doctors have different recommendations, but both the ones I’ve gone to have asked me not to eat any fiber for a week, and to avoid red food. I found that extremely unpleasant.

Then there’s a day of a clear liquid diet, and several hours of sitting on the pot.

Oh, yeah. Id forgotten about the couple of days of no fiber and no red meat.

I’d still go for the colinoscopy. I have very little breast tissue (a lack of estrogen at puberty will do that), and imagine the squeeze would be painful.

A mammogram is a couple of minutes of extreme pain, and the whole thing is over in an hour. A colonoscopy is days of preparation with a full day of extreme discomfort, followed by a horribly invasive procedure and the dangers of anesthesia.

I’ll take the mammogram any day. Hell, I’d take getting a cavity filled without Novocaine over a colonoscopy.

Heh. I don’t like anesthesia and sedation. I have had many cavities filled without lidocaine (i get it for the worst ones) and I’ve done both my colonoscopies without sedation.

The worst part of the colonoscopy, for me, was “no fiber for five days”. That was incredibly limiting. But the pain/discomfort was limited to a few seconds here and there as the doctor threaded the scope up. I don’t love fasting, but would characterize that as a full day of mild annoyance, not extreme discomfort. The actual procedure is sort of fun, because i don’t usually get to see that part of my anatomy.

The mammogram hurts more, for sure. But the whole thing takes two to three hours, including driving there and waiting for the procedure. A colonoscopy is something you have to be dealing with for a week. I’ll take the mammogram.

I had no pain with the actual colonoscopy, but have a friend who must be put under for the procedure because she has a twisted colon and the procedure is extremely painful.

And ladies, I can’t say this enough. Request a digital mammogram. No squeeze, no pain and the results are much clearer. Does it cost more? A bit. But the results are worth it.

I gather the amount of pain varies quite a bit. And it’s typically worse for women than for men. But i guess I’m lucky that way.

I am an atypical woman. But then my mother had a high pain threshold, too.

I probably should have checked before the Dishes poll. I hadn’t realized Mrs Magill had put the empty coffee pot and her breakfast plate in the sink.

My wall-mounted spice rack is slightly above the countertop, so i voted “no”. Although some overflow loose spices sit on the counter. :grinning:

You can change your vote. Click on “show vote” and switch it.

There didn’t seem to be an option for “one meal’s worth, and I’ll get them done sometime today.” I took the closest. Maybe “shortly” includes “up to midnight when it’s 10 AM now”?

I included some stuff that’s on kitchen surfaces not technically part of the counters. I didn’t include the coffee grinder bolted to the wall, though, or the spices inside a cabinet; only things that are on surfaces and that sometimes are on counters.

I have a hand soap dispenser built into the sink, and a bottle of dish soap next to the sink. I voted “yes” for both of those.

Yeah, I tried writing a description for the kitchen counters poll that went something like “but not things on your cooktop or built into your sink but if it’s sitting on your drop-in sink include that but not built-ins” and it was just a mess and I truncated the whole thing. So it’s zen: if you think it’s on your counter, it is!

Ah, so i correctly divined your intent when i voted “no” on the wall-mounted microwave and spice rack. Excellent.

You did. :white_check_mark:

I am a little surprised that not one person had a countertop spice rack.

We have a whole horizontal drawer for spices. Our contractor asked if we wanted one, and we said yes.

We asked for one too, but we didn’t get it (don’t get me started on my contractor rant)

Re the Power Ball Poll:

There would be a Maus Magill shaped hole in the wall.

My house came with a built in spice shelf, just tall enough for the glass bottles and two deep

When I remodeled my kitchen, I had them put in one of those pull out, tall/skinny lower cabinets for holding spices and bottles of stuff. I thought it was a nice feature to have.

I don’t use it for spices: I’d rather put spices in an upper cabinet at eye level. I just put bottles of cooking stuff / oils in the pull out cabinet.
