Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

In New York City, Italian ice is a non-dairy ice& syrup treat.

(The pictures in that article aren’t great.)

Ice cream needs to include milk/cream to be real. (Similar vegan desserts aren’t allowed to be called ice cream by the FDA.)

To me, gelato is a style of ice cream popular in Italy.

My GP about 10 years ago looked at me curiously once when I was in his office for a routine checkup.

He promptly said, “Your left leg is half an inch shorter than your right.”

This explained my occasional bouts of back pain that I had had off and on throughout my entire adult life. I quickly got a lift for the left shoe, and that helped immensely. Note it affected my golf game back when I played, led to a reverse weight shift and thus a chronic slice.

I only just found out I have one leg shorter than the other, and I should have figured it out before. I know whenever I’d walk anywhere with my siblings who are all at least 4 inches taller than me*, if I tried to keep up at their pace, I’d get a really sore hip. Makes sense!

  • Not so weird: I have two cousins who are sisters, and one is 6’ and the other is 5’3".

If we did away with the electoral college, all the other issues would come to pass.

My thinking as well; then again, we’d still have jacked-up state governments and a gerrymandered and unbalanced legislative branch, so maybe not.

I voted for near-universal gun control. Save a lot of lives right now.

I recently learned that I have eight spleens. Weird!

Oooh! Now that’s special! May they never give you trouble.

As I mentioned upthread Italian Ice is a slightly Americanized version of Sicilian granita. It’s not ice cream.

Gelato in Italy can be a generic term for ice cream. In the US it’s a specific type of ice cream based on an Italian style. It has less butterfat and has much less air than regular ice cream which gives it a much different texture.

I consider myself a good parent and I feel like I’m a lesser parent than I wanted to be. Those are not mutually exclusive but you can only pick one.

For the political poll I believe that healthcare is the one issue that would have both the greatest immediate and also long term benefit for the largest amount of people. Looks like a lot of people agree.

Yeah. That’s not even my first choice for universal coverage, but it would be SOOOO much better than what we have.

This. There are several items on that list I would consider but right now universal coverage is an issue near and dear to my heart.

Regarding Masgouf, I voted never. Why? Because of Saddam? Well no, because of fish phobia. On a very rare occasion, I will eat fish, but I have to convince myself it isn’t what I think. But Masgouf looks like a dead fish on a plate. Not for me.

The Masgouf poll needed a “I’ll give it a try, and if I like it, I’ll get it again,” option

I don’t eat fresh-water fish in any form, so the masgouf is a hard pass.

Agreed. That’s how I felt. I voted “eat it more than once” because I assume I’ll like it

I read all about Masgouf and now I’m craving it. I love fish in general and for a fish dish to become a countries’ national dish, I assume it is assume.

Ditto.

I’d certainly try it. Food isn’t ruined just because someone i don’t like enjoys it. But whether i sought it out again would depend on how much i liked it the first time.

But it sounds delicious. So probably I’d like it.

I certainly agree. But that type of presentation for a fish dish is simply not appetizing to me. So I’m probably not trying it.

If they’re going to charge me $40 for a portion, I can’t afford it, so I’m not going to try it.

If they’re handing out free samples, or I can get a sample for a couple of bucks, I’ll definitely try it. The description sounds delicious.

Whether I’ll eat it again will depend on whether I liked it the first time; and also on whether I can afford it.

Whether Saddam liked it has nothing to do with it. Hitler, reportedly, liked dogs. That’s not going to stop me from having a dog. – if the stall’s being run by people trying to re-instate a Saddam-type regime, that would put me off, though. If it’s raising money to attempt do so by selling the fish, then I’m definitely not getting any, even a couple of dollar’s worth.

– I couldn’t make up my mind in the political wish list poll, so didn’t vote. I need at least three of those choices, and preferably more.

It’s $40 for a fish that feeds 4-6. If you have some friends and family, it’s not that bad per portion.

I agree about "if it’s a fund raiser ", but i tend to assume that things not included in the question aren’t to be assumed.

I’d try masgouf once and be open to having it again, if I liked it.

Sorry to see how the fish are treated while still alive, though. Although a carnivore, I don’t want the animals I eventually eat to suffer any more than is necessary.
