Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

The funny thing about the commercial I posted above is thats the exact same station wagon and exact same color I was in when trying to get truckers to hit their horn. The exact dangerous spot in the far back where I would sit too.

Maybe? Google “what is a butter bell?”

Sounds like a solution in seach of a problem to me; I’ve never once had butter spoil while out on the counter in a plain glass butter dish.

In midsummer when it’s really hot and I’m not baking fresh breads, our household butter consumption goes down at the same time the average kitchen temperature goes up. I’ve had butter go rancid on me in those conditions, so we use half-sticks in hot weather.

I chose jelly beans for the Easter candy poll; I want to like Cadbury eggs, but the filling is just too sickly sweet and the raw egg theme turns my stomach a bit. I’d like Reese’s eggs, but the proportion of peanut butter filling to chocolate coating is just too skewed. And Peeps are only good for staging jousts in the microwave.

Easter candy is a big no for me, so I picked jelly beans as a default option.

I didn’t grow up with easter candy, so not a big deal. And as an adult, I’ve given up 90% or more of the cheap candy out there, which most ‘holiday’ candy is. Chocolate that tastes like wax, fillers that are nothing but tortured HFCS, candy shells that taste like chalk.

Nope.

But my wife LOVES the Cadbury mini-eggs (chalk shelled waxy chocolate, no filling), so I’ll wait until they go on sale, buy a half dozen bags, and hide them to doll out on bad days for the next two months or so.

Reminder that we need a “none of the above” for sweets. I almost never eat sweets, like ever.

It’s rare that I can get sausage patties - so if they are offered as a choice for breakfast, I’m getting them.

I really like marshmallows, even Peeps. Even Peeps which are a little old. I do not like peppermint Peeps, but I do like the cocoa Peeps.

There’s always room for pie.

It’s not really for spoilage, it just keeps the butter usable at all times rather than melted/re-hardened in the bottom of a regular butter dish. It could be 90 degrees in your kitchen and the butter still won’t melt.

No candy for me, thanks. I’ll eat gummi bears occasionally, that’s about it.

I’ve seen skunks dozens of times over the years, never been sprayed. I just give them a wide berth and they leave me alone.

Someone should put the “hand pump” thing in one of the “things younger people may not recognize” threads. With everyone facing forward and buckled up, kids probably aren’t really in a position to interact with truckers any longer.

No appetizers first or dessert last, ever. I have had just appetizers for dinner many times.

We have certain appetizers (mussels!) we’ll always order and share. Desserts? Never. No room

It depends a lot on what the restaurant is. Some places I’ll always order an app. Some places i never do. It’s pretty rare for me to order an app instead of a main (too much risk I’ll go hungry) but I’ve done it.

I don’t usually get dessert. But if i still have room after my main, and we’re having a good time, or the desserts look really good, i might do it.

I’ve ordered two appetizers instead of an entree. There’s a place we go where they really nail the appetizers.

I love jelly beans, but they have to be Brach’s. “Gormet” jelly beans are just nasty to me.

I did not know these existed.

It’s as if someone said to me, “Mustard, choose your two most vile food items and we shall combine them and market them.”

mmm

“Mustard, choose your two most vile food items and we shall combine them and market them.”
You’ve never had my red licorice ‘n’ eggplant treat.

I’m the other way around, at least for Jelly-Belly.

I thought I was the only one since people seem to love Cadbury eggs.

We call mostly appetizer meals “Mermaid dinners” after the Cher/Winona Ryder/Christina Ricci movie (which has a kickass soundtrack, btw).

I’ve seen lots of skunks and smelled lots of skunks, but I’ve never been skunked.

Me, too. Jelly-Belly are just a bit softer, less sugary, and more flavorful. Ones like Brachs are hard and sugary and flavorless to me.

I hadn’t thought of that aspect. I often order appetizers because I don’t want a full order or to deal with a doggie bag.

Regarding Easter candy, I would have picked Cadbury mini eggs, in dark chocolate. That creme egg is just too cloying with sugar. I used to like the big Dove truffle egg, but they were made smaller and then more expensive. I do like black licorice jelly beans, though. Send yours my way.

I’m so old…

How old are you?

I’m so old, I can remember being in high school and putting $.25 worth of gas in the car for the weekend.

Gas pump, depends. In a declining market, I’ll only put in as much as I think I’ll need for a few days. In an increasing market, top off before Monday or Tuesday, which is when the usual increases hit. I live in a price cycling state [FL], where they typically do their thang every two weeks, so I am expecting another one this upcoming week. Most of the time I am filling up at the cheapest prices in those two week periods. [Oil has been down but wholesale gas has gone up mainly because many refineries are offline to switch to summer blends, south of the Mason-Dixon line]

I stop for gas when my tank is empty. Currently I can almost fill my tank by getting $50, so I stop at $50. This makes it easier to identify gas purchases for tax purposes.
