Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

I think I’ve been at a wedding rehearsal dinner at which the wedding was actually rehearsed, but if so it was so long ago that I’m not at all sure it ever happened. So my answer would be ‘maybe, can’t remember’ which is not one of the choices; neither is ‘other’; didn’t vote.

ETA: voted “competence” – but am assuming that part about “will avoid doing anything that harms the country too much” is accurate by a reasonable definition, and doesn’t include things like ‘they don’t think it harms the country too much to screw up the electoral system in a fashion that will prevent anybody opposing them from ever being elected, so they’re going to succeed in doing that.’

I’ve read that in his family, he was called Lyss. (Which rhymes with Miss not Lice or Liz. But he had five siblings so he probably got called all those things as well.)

There’s zillions of other places people can get married. We got married at a fancy restaurant. A cousin got married in a museum — I always thought that was very creative.

My sister got married on a lake near our hometown. It was beautiful but the fact that it rained and the deck out over the water was slippery makes me glad that I was married in a church.

Regarding the some people/anyone can poll, I believe that there are a lot of things that people can’t change just by wanting to. All the exercise and diet hasn’t changed my weight, though taking medicine did help some. I know some people that won’t take pain medication because they had a problem with drugs in the past and they worry that any drug might send them into a relapse. I’ve fought depression my whole life and while they’re are days that I work around it with the help of medicine and other tricks, there are some days that nothing helps. I try not to judge another person, even if I have walked a mile in their shoes.

Voting under the presumption that ‘there’s nothing they can do about it’ means ‘there is no treatment available to this person that will solve the problem’, but does not mean ‘there is nothing that could possibly done to make improvements in this person’s life’.

Or, for an example: I’m presuming that ‘nothing to be done about it’ for a person addicted to injectable drugs means ‘no treatment currently available to this person will make this specific person not need the drugs, even though it might work for somebody else’ but the ‘no treatment’ doesn’t include, say, ‘clean needles and a reliable dose in a safe location with no need to steal anything to acquire them’. They’d still be addicted; but the impact on both them and others would be significantly lessened.

My best friend got married in a library. Actually, it was an old de-commissioned library. They’d built a new/bigger/higher tech library in Redondo Beach, but the old one still existed, and it was a cool building very close to the pier. It made a very interesting venue. Old books were used in the table centerpieces, and the placecards used literary quotes.

The late wife and I got married at a drive-thru chapel in Las Vegas. Turned out wonderfully.

What a novel idea.

The differing number of voters in the various ‘some people are . . . and can’t do anything about it’ polls is interesting.

Throw the book at him!

Dewey really want to do that?

It’s all the same tome. Er, to me.

I wear heavy duty front-clasp sports bras every day. I haven’t used a back clasper in ages. But when I do, I clasp it in the back, upside-down, and then flip it right side up.

That other poll made me miss my kitty.

I literally (and literately) groaned.

Are we going to see stacks of library puns now?

and it’s changed quite a bit since I posted that.

Shhhhhhh!!!

you must admit, it was overdue

My story is similar to yours. When I injured my shoulder, I had to switch to sports bras, which usually don’t do a good job of hiding under your shirt. I tried with two front hook bras, but am too large for that to work well. I need more support that most front-hooks can handle. The clasp on one of the bras broke and the other turned out to be quite uncomfortable.

With the new fabrics out there for wireless bras, I’ve now got a couple that I actually step into and pull up. Once on, they’re great, but getting them on any other way than stepping into is a challenge. Sometimes, I wish breasts were something you could simply remove when you don’t need them instead of lugging them around and trying to keep them out of the way.

Regarding the “Some people” polls. I believe everyone’s experience is different and everyone’s bodies and brains are different. I can say I’m going to lose weight is far different from the struggle I have to actually keep that weight off. Try, just try walking a mile in the moccasins of the person you are dissing because of their struggles before you open your mouth about how they aren’t applying themselves enough.

The vegan/vegetarian poll was tough, because it put the two together. I like meat, but I love cheese. So, while it is conceivable that I could become a vegetarian, I could never be a vegan. (yes, I know there are vegan “cheese” options)
