Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

Okay, I missed “legal to drive on public streets” on that last one. But @squeegee’s previous poll had no such caveat.

It had a sweet feel to it. I used to take the ramp from one highway to the other on the way to work, winding it up in 3rd and then just dropping it right into 5th. I know 4th was there for some reason, but I rarely used it.

RX-7, or something else?

My city has had the combined recycling stream for quite some time. I think they recycle as much of it as they can, but when they can’t, it’s usually because of market factors rather than because it’s mixed.

As for the couple with the insects, I think they should move back to the US. Over 42 years of marriage, I’ve learned that when one spouse finds a situation unbearable, the other needs to make a compromise. You can’t be happy if your spouse is miserable.

Yeah. I would not be the miserable spouse. I like insects in general, and am only mildly annoyed by insects in the house. I’d probably enjoy the katydids. But you can’t expect your spouse to put up with conditions that make them miserable.

TBF I almost marked steam myself having run one of the Panama-Pacific locomotives a guy had on his artichoke farm but discounted it.

RX-7 – nice ride, but there were issues.

Yeah. The issue isn’t the insects. The issue is that one spouse is miserable there; and the other one shouldn’t be saying that that’s just fine with them.

I’ve always thought the terms are interchangeable, and depend on regional usage.

Wikipedia agrees with me: “The terms shrimp and prawn have no definite reference to any known taxonomic groups. Although the term shrimp is sometimes applied to smaller species, while prawn is more often used for larger forms, there is no clear distinction between both terms and their usage is often confused or even reverse in different countries or regions.”

Huh, ignorance fought. I’d always heard, for decades, that they were similar but different things. I guess that was one of those things that everyone knows that just isn’t true.

My brother was in the army (peacetime). He jumped out of planes for training. When he left the army and returned to the US I assumed he’d take me out skydiving. Nope. Although he’d done hundreds of jumps including night time and low altitude, he only did them because he was ordered to.

Yeah, it was my friend’s RX I drove, and that thing was constantly in the shop.

There are obviously a lot of different species that are called shrimp or prawn. I’ve never been clear on exactly which were which. But I’ve had “shrimp” that’s were clearly of different species. I assume it’s a family of related animals.

I don’t mind the flying cockroaches, especially if they’re huge. I feel like I’m in a primeval setting.

I’ll never forget one of my first lunches with my soon-to-be in-laws in Alabama, we were sitting on the back porch when a massive cockroach flew by and tucked itself into the house brickwork directly behind me. I’d never seen one before, but nobody even reacted, so I just sat there quietly and then after a few minutes scootched my chair slightly forward.

There are almost 3500 identified species of Caridea (considered “true shrimp”) and over 500 species of Dendrobranchiata which tend to be larger and include species like giant tiger prawn. To laymen they all more or less look alike and vary primarily in size.

I think they should stay for a full year, before deciding whether to pack it in or not.

Re: engines. I got to drive a steam tractor/combine; it was boring because slow and a bit scary. But I’ve also piloted a pontoon boat, a motorless raft, and a paddlewheel tour boat (for about 2 minutes).

I think you might have missed the “legal to drive on public streets” requirement in that poll. Unless the boats are in reference to a different poll.

D’oh. My bad. Send me home.

I lived in Gainesville, FL for a minute. We had an apartment with a window facing the woods, which was nice. First night we got there I walked into the bedroom.

Husband: Hey let’s open the window and get some fresh air in here
Me: Opens window
Giant Palmetto Bug flies toward us
In Unison: Close the window! Close the window!

I quite like bugs and I got used to the palmetto bugs soon enough. And I spent some time on a ranch in Mexico with all open windows and these people had hornets living in their hallway light fixture.

Bugs don’t bother me. But if my spouse were really struggling and after an adjustment period still wanted to go home, we’d go home.
