Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

I’ve eaten cornmeal mush every so often, but I buy a brick or tube of it and fry it in a pan.

At this point in my life the chances of my getting Lyme is very slim. I’m not particularly worried about it. I’m much more likely to catch the other two. I still pick Lyme because of the benefit to the greatest number of people. Sure it would be great to not get norovirus or RSV but for the vast majority it’s a short term discomfort. Chances are I wouldn’t even take the vaccine of either.

No unknown would have beaten Trump, certainly not me. The same diehards who vote in every election for either side would still vote. Voter apathy for an unknown would keep too many people at home for Trump to lose. It would be great if issues were the only factor but fame, name recognition and image have way more to do with it.

Isn’t it called polenta if you slice it and fry it up?

I’ve had polenta. Never made it, but eaten it. I’ve had grits with milk and brown sugar. I’ve never had corn meal mush.

I’m a liberal white woman in her 60’s (although I was only 59 in 2020). I’m well aware that any policies I personally come up with would be pretty far left of what the vast majority of the American public wants. There are a few skeletons in my family’s closet that I’d prefer not to make public. I’m naturally pretty lazy, and the idea of sitting through policy and election strategy meetings is my idea of torture. But if I were the Democratic nominee and it was me or Trump, I’d fight like hell. I’d take the advice of political strategists, I’d adopt policies that were more to the center than my inclination, I’d be a team player, and I’d surround myself with the best advisors and speechwriters available. And I’d almost certainly lose, because bullying women is Trump’s specialty, and although the country says they don’t like bullies, they really don’t like victims. If Clinton couldn’t beat him, I’m certainly not going to.

The package I buy calls it cornmeal mush. But the same style package at a different store is labeled Polenta.

I searched online for a bit and found that they’re the same thing, that the grind size is different, that regionally names differ, etc.

My mother hated corn meal mush (as did the Sparky McFarlane), so we never had it at home.

I love that corn pudding thing you get at some Mexican restaurants, and it’s fine as a side. I don’t think I’d care to eat a whole bowl of it unless there was something more interesting/flavorful included in it.

When I went through flight school, I was taught to touch the wall of the plane (requires a window seat) so that I could anticipate the movement which would help with the nausea. Sometimes it really does.

Good strategy! Sadly, my disequalibrium is a mighty force made even stronger by taking Ozempic.

I drive an automatic, and do use low on hilly terrain. But only if it’s snowing.

I don’t care for cornmeal mush. Never made it.

I saw a few early episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but it didn’t grab me. Haven’t seen any of the other series.

I voted for kitties over doggies, but I really do like both.

As a white male progressive Democrat from Ohio who’s relatively politically savvy and has done a good bit of public speaking over the years, I think I’d have a decent shot against Trump in 2016. But defeating any incumbent President - even one as awful as him, in the middle of a damn pandemic - is tough.

I’m kind of cheating on the low-gear question. My Volt has a “low” gear that basically enables one-pedal driving. When you let up on the gas, engine braking kicks in and charges the battery while slowing the car. Our other car, also an automatic, has a low gear that helps in 4WD driving, and I use that on unimproved dirt roads.

We watched a few episodes of Agent Carter, but then I lost interest. I’d have liked to see WandaVision, but we don’t have Apple+.

As for kitties vs. doggies, I really like dogs, and I’ve loved the dogs I’ve had. But I get cats in a way that I don’t get dogs.

For me, corn meal mush is a breakfast item, served with maple syrup. Polenta is a side dish for lunch or dinner, and is savory.

I know they are the same, more or less.

My parents make corn meal mush by mixing corn meal with cold water and adding it to salted boiling water and then cook it for 7-8 minutes (at least, that’s what I have written on the recipe card.) They then add milk and maple syrup at the table.

Yesterday I tried a different recipe which replaced the cold water with milk and the concoction is cooked for 15 minutes. I added jelly to it, just because I didn’t want to open the can of maple syrup at this time. As there was already milk in it, I didn’t need to add any for serving. I’ll be using this recipe in the future.

That looks really good. Where I live it’s easy to buy masa harina - just have to go to the Mexican store. But cream style corn? I have to order it from the American food store and it’s rarely in stock.

Canned maple syrup? Oh, you’re in Yurp.

Heh, I’d say go to any food pantry, because my siblings always wanted to give up our cans of creamed corn when our school had food drives. I was the only one who liked it.

There are a lot of variant options out there, including some that just use frozen whole corn kernels that might be easier to source. I would advise that depending on the variant, you may need more butter or a bit of cream to tinker with the consistency. It’s a great side-dish for me when I’m cooking any of my spicier Mexican/Fusion foods, as I can use it to cut the immediate burn a bit between bites.

The corn pudding is the tomalito we’re talking about. And yeah, it can get overly sweet in large servings. It freezes pretty well (not perfect, but okay) so if you make a full batch it’s not a problem to set some aside, but it also works perfectly well as a dessert component instead of a side. I’ve done so with a scoop of quality vanilla ice cream, an equal scoop of the tomalito (just barely warmed so to get the texture back, but not hot enough to quickly melt the ice-cream) both drizzled with hot honey (a capsicum and cinnamon infused honey).

Treat yourself.

Sounds good!

Mush does not appeal to me. When I make oatmeal, it has just enough water in it to make the rolled oats moist, while still having some texture. Then, of course, it has to have walnuts and raisins and every other non-boring thing I can think of added to it.

This kind of can:
(Buy Madal Bal maple syrup Grade C + (1000ml) | Kanela)

Ah. Yes, I have seen that kind of can. My mind went straight to something like a soup can. I wouldn’t call it a can, though. I’m not sure what I’d call it.

I typically buy maple syrup in a gallon jug.

Um, that will last me a few years, so when i open it i re-can it in some large glass bottles, and put a small jug in the fridge and the bottles in the pantry. But for reasons, the lady few times I’ve bought maple syrup i bought the gallon size.
