Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

@Velocity, can you add “None of the above” to your polls? I find myself skipping your polls a lot.

Please, and thank you.

This. If what’s being translated is full of misinformation (not including fiction not meant to be taken as true in this world), the misinformation should be noted. But it should be translated as is – not only because it’s not the translator’s job to do anything else, but also because if the author’s spreading obvious misinformation that fact shouldn’t be concealed. It’s important information about the original author.

I think we may have had this discussion with @Velocity earlier in the thread.

I’m also “none of the above” on the latest. I’m not interested in going into that field and therefore, even if I had the money, would not be paying for any of the courses. And I don’t know enough about it to have an opinion on which would be most useful for somebody else.

I was talking to a friend who is a translator about a piece she was working on last week. It was by a German author from 300 years ago. She said her biggest problem with the translation has to do with how languange and meanings change over time. She apparently can’t travel back in time to see how the words were meant compared to today.

I chose translate literally, but I would add copious footnotes. It might take a while…

And also because, if translators are given carte blanche to fix all the errors they find in the texts they’re translating, they will inevitably introduce new errors by fixing “errors” which they believe to be wrong but which are actually correct. Maybe you or I wouldn’t do this, but some would.

Have we? Can I add my voice to those who request a “none of the above” or “NA” for that kind of poll? I have zero interest, and I’m not going to answer. But that means that every time I open the thread I see a thread with questions instead of answers, and feel like it’s one I missed, and read it again (at least when it’s close to current) and I am less interested and more annoyed each time I do that.

It’s spelled “Ridgid” and I taught AP European History for 20+ years, so I know a charge de merde métrique about Eleanor of Aquitane.

I checked the power tools I have/have used recently. Some of the others I have no opinion on; they may also be fine.

When it comes to power tools, professionals should definitely spend more for a top-tier brand, but for the average home user, paying more for a DeWalt or Milwaukee when a Ryobi will suffice is probably a waste of money.

I had a Ryobi drill for years and recently replaced it with a DeWalt. These are the only power tools I have ever owned. I like the DeWalt marginally better than the Ryobi. But it is heavier and I don’t have that strong of hands to hold it steady in awkward places. I found it very challenging to hold for a recent task, to fix a broken drawer in the back of my cupboard.

I am a woman with small hands.

I’ve got a relatively inexpensive Black & Decker cordless drill that I’ve had as long as I’ve owned this house. It most definitely not professional grade, but it is perfectly sufficient for drilling pilot holes in the wall for putting up blinds or curtain rods or smoke detectors, which is pretty much all it gets used for. My only complaint is that the battery is an old nickle-cadmium type that doesn’t hold a charge when it’s been sitting unused for a while, so I have to remember to charge it before I want to use it.

I love Lion in Winter. Mrs Magill was running props, and I was ASM on that show when we met.

Cool! I love that movie, too.

The Lion in Winter is one of my very favorite films, as well (plus, I’ve had a crush on Katharine Hepburn for most of my adult life), so when I saw mention of Eleanor in the tools poll, I had to give her her own poll!

It’s possible a Makita would be a better fit; but it’s also possible that I think that because the DeWalt I’ve used was older than the Makita, and maybe new versions of the two are of similar weight.

Rome? That’s where they keep the Pope, isn’t it?

I voted for Makita because that’s what I have, and it’s been perfect for relatively few uses I’ve had for it.

I checked off “other saw” for the multi-tool.

I checked off “other saw” for my battery-powered pruning chainsaw.

I guess it’s a grey area, but I think of chainsaws as lawn and garden equipment rather than “power tools”. But I think that calls for another poll.

Power tools I own that weren’t in the poll:

Tablesaw (I counted it as “other saw”)
Jigsaw
Drill press
Thickness planer
Jointer
