Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

I forgot to mention that I say catty corner. Kitty corner always sounded “girlie” and juvenile to me.

Not sure how to answer the second two sections of the medications poll.

I wouldn’t die immediately, or in the next few days, as a result of not taking take any of them: neither life-saving nor keeping me out of the hospital in that sense. But I’d be extremely likely to die years sooner, and probably with a lot more unpleasant symptoms first including some that could indeed land me in the hospital, if I didn’t take at least one of them, and quite possibly if I didn’t take any one of them.

And it occurs to me that, although I did answer the first section, I’m not sure if I answered it correctly. I answered according the number of prescriptions; but one of them combines two medications in one pill.

I lean more toward the “pure racing should be about the skill of the driver, not of the mechanic” camp, but I can see that there’s also something to be said about pitting vastly different vehicles against one another that’s absolutely also a fun and valid racing format.

I very rarely skipped school. Although one time, I milked an extra day of an illness, in order to watch a presidential inauguration.

Kitty corner. Catty corner sounds like cattawampus, which isn’t the same.

I always heard it pronounced catacorner.

But may come from the same word

I say catty-corner but the t sound is almost a d sound

There’s an isogloss map of the distribution in the US of “kitty corner” vs. “catty corner” in this article. The former is used more in the northern and western US, while the latter is used more in the south and east.

I never skipped school or even a class but I had far from a perfect attendance record. My mother let me get away with having tummy aches every now and then. I was too much of a rule follower to skip but I didn’t like going.

I marked “you forgot” but what you forgot was that some of us didn’t generally get sugared cereal.

I didn’t mark anything on the cereal poll. I never liked any of the sugared cereals. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

We can only vote for 3 sweet cereals in the poll? We were only allowed to eat that stuff on weekends, but i had at least 2/3 of those when i was a kid.

I still sometimes buy a box of lucky charms.

I… uh… checked all the boxes.

Then when I hit “Vote Now,” I noticed some of the cereals hadn’t been chosen. This confused me until I saw where I could only vote for three. I guess if you vote for more, Discoure “lets” you but only counts the first three? That could skew the voting, if there are others who don’t notice the limit.

I’m on seven prescriptions, but most of them are for allergies or to ease unpleasant symptoms. Only one is necessary for life, and there’s a second that tamps down an arrhythmia that probably wouldn’t kill me (unless I developed a clot and had a stroke).

If you had asked me before I read the list of cereals, I would have said my mom didn’t buy sugary cereal. But I had a very clear sense memory of Sugar Smacks, Lucky Charms, and Honeycomb cereals, so I’m sure we had those. I also remember Cap’n Crunch, but mainly because it made the roof of my mouth hurt.

Skipping: I picked some, but about the same as many others, and 95% of the time I was doing it by acting sick and convinced my folks.

Two notable exceptions. I skipped for a straight week in junior high - I was academically stressed (too many Honors / Grade ahead classes) and was being somewhat bullied. My folks found out, and I confessed why. So got some counselling on the bullying, and dropped one class from the ahead a year schedule to just honors and it ended up working out.

The second was my senior year in HS. I was 3 credits ahead to graduation, and with teachers permission, didn’t have scheduled morning classes so I could take a class at the local college. That wasn’t skipping though. What was, is that I had a school requirement for a year’s worth of Frikkin PE (Physical Education). I got half of it done my freshman year doing summer school (which was largely indistinguishable from going to a summer camp!), but finally had to get it out of the way.

Instead, I skipped about every third class (it was 6th and thus final period) to go with my friends to the local burger joint after our 5th Period AP Physics and we’d work on our homework together.

And even then, I got a B+ in PE - I guess the school didn’t have much expectations for a 6th period PE class performance or attendance.

Sugar cereal - My father had an unhealthy love of frosted flakes, so that was the only sugar cereal in my childhood. I actually was a fan (and remain so) of plain Cheerios. But during my college years, sometimes the cafeteria food was so … unappealing that cereal was breakfast! During which times I loved the faux-fruit of Froot Loops, or the sinful sugar rush of Golden Grahams. The latter was not listed, much to the polls detriment.

I had and liked many more than the three allowed cereals. Now I can’t tolerate fhe milk and don’t like milk substitutes so I can’t have any.

I never had an unexcused absence grades 1 through 11. One morming in Spring of my Senior Year i was sitting in class, second or third period, and thought Hey dummy you’ve never skipped school, you should do that. So i told the teacher that i was going to use the restroom and just walked out of the school for the rest of the day. My reputation was such that next day just one teacher counted me unexcused, and i was called to the principal’s office. I’m not sure but I think I told him I left for the day just because. Even if I didn’t he wouldn’t have cared. He and I were friendly with each other. There was no fall out.

That trig teacher who ratted on me was just that kind of follow the rules to the letter kind of guy.

You attended college during your childhood?

mmm

There’s no way I would make a special trip to the grocery store for one ingredient. I would use black beans, but the kidneys would work just as well. I would also probably leave out the potato and throw in a handful of rice or barley to thicken it up, and use chicken stock instead of water(if I had some in the freezer).

It’s a pot of stew, and it can get over itself

I have cereal for breakfast almost every day. Cereal, berries, milk, and tea. I wrote like cereal for breakfast.

Sometimes, when I’m tired or out of sorts, I’ll have cereal for supper, too. I really like milk.
