Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

Qatar Airlines is usually rated one of the best airlines in the world. It has a large connecting hub in Doha. So world travelers might have to say the word “Qatar” even if they have no intention of visiting that country.

Being the host nation of the World Cup, and all the controversy surrounding it, would also give many people a reason to say “Qatar”. I assumed that was what prompted the poll in the first place.

Plus one.

Yeah, more or less. I’ve pondered its pronunciation for a good while, then the World Cup popped up and I’ve heard it pronounced several different ways.

mmm

Ah, true. I should have realized that.

It depends. Parasailing: No. Cancer treatment: Yeah.

“Do you personally know someone (friend, co-worker, family member, online acquaintances don’t count) who you know is transgendered or non-binary.”

What a weird requirement. I’m dating a trans lady so I guess she’s my friend, but I also know her ex’s SO who is non-binary (I wouldn’t say we’re friends, met once).

I think you are supposed to parse that as “do you know a non-binary or trans person in meat space, like a friend or relative or coworker. Don’t count people you only know online.”

I guess you’re right, but if that’s what was meant, it was poorly worded/punctuated.

@Buck_Godot ?

I would have liked an option for “There are many trans and non-binary people in my meatspace.”

Well, there are many trans and non-binary people in my meatspace, but my poll was already cumbersome, and I’m on my phone. Sorry about that.

Hmm, i might be in the edit window…

Autocorrect is really not your friend today…

Fixed. (I think)

But the poll wasn’t in the edit window.

I was referring to the first poll. Hadn’t seen yours yet.

I would have liked an option for “I don’t know, maybe they just haven’t told me.” I don’t assume that because somebody hasn’t made an announcement otherwise to, say, the planning board or the other farmers’ market vendors or all of their neighbors, they must be cis male or female.

So I made a poll out of that one.

– come to think of it, I just remembered someone who has told me; except that I’ve never met them. But I don’t know them from online – they’re married to a person I haven’t seen in some years but am still in touch with, mostly by very intermittent snail mail. What category does that come into? I don’t know, and think I’ll leave my vote the same. But I didn’t vote in the other polls on the subject.

I read a few years ago in some authoritative source (NYT, maybe?) that “Cutter” was as close as most Americans could probably get to correctly pronouncing Qatar, so that’s how I’ve said it ever since (on the rare occasion when I have to say it at all).

I laughed.

Yes that’s what I meant. My punctuation has always been atrocious sorry. What I was trying to avoid is , I was at a oarty once and I was introduced to a trans woman, and also since the Dope has a large number of vocal trans members (and we are all friends here :slightly_smiling_face:), it would heavily skew the results to include online friends.

A semicolon would have done wonders. Just a suggestion.
