Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

I think you found your answer.

Yeah - I think Jessie’s friend has more of a pining heart, rather than a broken heart.

The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him. — Niccolo Machiavelli

If I had to sit on the Supreme Court, I believe that I would be able to hire legal advisors who could help me grasp the subtleties and technicalities of a given case.

For the serviceperson poll, I went with something else. The last 2-3 times I needed anything along those lines, I did a direct contact through their website or Yelp. I have spend over 2 decades doing business over the phone, and most of the time getting names and #s correct over the line unless someone is being very careful is a difficult proposition. And no one wants to take the time out of their day to sit and listen to messages (often more than once) to get that information when there are yet other people calling at the same time!

So, a text based option seems to work better, and often faster. Because often a person can check multiple emails / alerts from a text system, and it’s less work.

I also picked other. Because in a situation like that, i always start with my name and number, then say what I’m calling about, and then end with my name and number.

I tend not to leave voice messages if a business doesn’t answer their phone directly.

I’ve likely called them during a quiet moment when I have all the information I need in front of me, have in mind what I need to ask, etc. I don’t need them calling me back when I’m doing and thinking about something else.

Plus, I block all numbers that aren’t already in my contact list, so their call is going to go to my voice mail, and the game of tag is on.

Answer your phone or you don’t get my business.

+1

I at least try to remember to do it that way.

It’s hard to answer the air travel question without knowing the prices involved. If premium economy is $25 more, I’m definitely taking it. If it’s $500 more, I’ll stick with economy. I answered based on a guess at the price differences based on other flights I’ve booked.

I just took a look at the actual price difference between Premium Economy and Business for a (round-trip) BA flight from LAX to Heathrow on a non-holiday week in September. It’s almost double for Business! I think I’d settle for trying to sleep sitting up. I have enough money to be able to splurge, but my economy instincts kick in too hard at that price difference.

Interestingly, if I were flying with Mr. Legend, I’d push for Business, just because I know he’d be in serious pain after a long flight sitting up, and it would take him a while to recover. I don’t usually sleep well on planes regardless, so I’d settle for standing up and moving around periodically.

And I can’t be the only one with a bathroom fan, right? The room won’t smell like poop after a few minutes.

This—and in my case, I haven’t had enough experience to have any clue what the price differences might be.

What if one can’t afford any of the flights?

– if I feel like I need to shit, I’m not going to be comfortable while I take the shower. So I’m going to take the shit first.

Shit first. It’s one of the reasons we have a powerful bathroom fan.

Yeah, i really don’t worry about that. I will experience a brief smell of poop immediately after pooping either way.

What she said.

I’m the opposite. We just flew London to Seattle and it was Business class there and back. If money is an issue, then certainly economy is bearable (I’ve done it more than once), but one of the nice things about having some extra money on hand is changing the airline experience. Beds that recline fully flat, good good and wine, and enough elbow room to breath.

ETA: I flew across the Atlantic once in British Air First Class. While it was very nice, it wasn’t enough nicer than business to justify the cost (to me) for the extras. The difference between business class and economy is night and day.

When we flew to Sydney for our honeymoon, Mrs Magill had enough airline miles to get us business class tickets. It was mice.

Sorry, had to laugh.

As a tall person, I need at least an exit row seat even on short flights. Sometimes first class is cost-prohibitive and sometimes it’s a reasonable splurge; airline pricing tends to have no rhyme or reason to it.

But I chose a luxury stateroom on the Queen Mary. Why not? If I have to go, might as well pop for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Those people who voted in Wildabeast’s poll, “I’ll spend my own money to upgrade to Business” to London… you do realize that an economy seat to London is $700ish*, and a business class seat is $4500ish dollars, right?** So you’d be paying $3800 for that better seat. I mean, you do you but that’s a lot of change to avoid being uncomfortable for a few hours. I’d just spend $100 each way to get an aisle seat and be done.

*ORD to LHR, just to hit the center of the US, though SFO to LHR was about the same.
*I see one outlier ticket at $3232, with a return stop in Istanbul fer chrissakes. Screw that.
