Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

The thing is, if an able bodied person goes into the handicapped stall even though there are a bunch of other stalls available, and then a handicapped person enters the bathroom, then the handicapped person has to wait even though there are a bunch of vacant stalls available. In other words, the handicapped person has to wait more than everybody else.

No, because you’re not preventing a handicapped person from also using the ramp simultaneously in that scenario.

I’m with @Fear_Itself - if I walk into a bathroom, a non-disabled person, sometimes I have to wait. For a handicapped stall, if I’m handicapped, I am absolutely first in line for that stall when someone completes at most a short visit. I don’t see the big deal if this is the case.

Does a woman in a wheelchair have to wait in a long line outside a bathroom at a woman’s facility at a ballgame? I guess? fairness and custom says yes. Politeness says, hell no. Is this really the same thing?

I’d never go into the handicapped stall as a first choice. Though I think I may have done so if the other stalls were incredibly gross (men are pigs), very seldom.

This. Which means i use it all the time. In particular, it makes a nice changing booth at work when I’m heading straight from the office to a square dance.

Once in my life a handicapped person showed up while i was using the stall. They had to wait about a minute. I felt bad, but it’s not as if they were seriously inconvenienced.

I’ve heard of all of them, and I’ve eaten all except two of them. But the poll didn’t include my favorite apple, ashmeads kernel. So i voted “other”. If it had allowed me to vote for more than one, i would also have voted for macoun, which is a really excellent apple.

I also noted the apple (fruit) poll says you can pick three, but only lets you vote if you pick a single option. :man_shrugging:

I went with McIntosh, another preference I inherit from my father. Moving from Massachusetts to New Mexico left him with only the default red and green apples in the local stores, and he was piiiiiisssed.

So every year as they came into season, he had his friends in NE send him a carefully packed (as they travel poorly and bruise easily) small crate that he enjoyed for a week or so. And since there were too many to eat easily before spoilage happens, I always got a few.

Handicapped stall use. My work building has one (!) male bathroom and two female on the floor, with three total stalls, one handicapped. I will use the two non-handicapped options if available (and working), and the handicapped stall if all others are in use. Which happens not really frequently, but at least 1-2 times a week.

Of course, nothing can be said of the times I have to use that option because someone is watching videos (with audio natch) on their phone on the john, for durations I consider unlikely to be entirely toilet related.

Where did i meet my SO? Right here, over 20 years ago. If it weren’t for the Dope, my life would have turned out very, very different.

Am I really the only person who met their SO in a bar? Wow.

Our friends/neighbors run a commercial apple orchard. They have many (dozens) varieties. Their macouns are a personal favorite. I like buying a few different kinds and making applesauce.

For the golf poll, I was tempted to choose “Not for me, but I enjoy the miniature kind”; but I’ve never tried golf, never having had a good opportunity, so I genuinely don’t know whether it’s “for me” (or would be, if I gave it a chance). I would have had to try it to have an opinion on it.

When I married Mrs Magill, she lived in a neighborhood that had a country club attached. The HOA made a deal with the country club to get the residents free twilight golf. For the two and a half years we lived there, we played nine holes nearly every weekend. We never got good, but it was fun. We never used the carts; “a good walk spoiled” indeed.

OK, what’s going on here? I was going to post the exact same sentence, as the last time I looked, I was the only one in the bar category.

But now my name is showing up as having met online.

Trust me, back when I was on the market, there was no “line” to be “on”.

mmm

ETA: Weirdly, I was just able to correct it.

I met my former husband in a bar. I met my last ex because we lived in the same building.

I sense that most of us here are more introverted than you. I enjoy a good bar night, but I rarely meet new people at such an establishment.

Before meeting my gf in a bar, the previous 3 women I dated I met in bars.

Now that I go to bars with my gf, we meet people for non-amorous purposes. The carpenter we recently had do some work on our outbuildings for example, was someone we talked to at a bar and ended up as friends.

That doesn’t surprise me one bit. You have that personality. In contrast, I met a woman in a bar one time in my life. The relationship lasted about 8 hours.

That’s also the circumstances I’m using it in. Either there’s no line and as I approached the restroom I didn’t see anyone else approaching, or I can see the line and nobody is either visibly disabled or themselves approaching or appearing to try to approach that stall.

Most of the time when I use public restrooms, there aren’t a lot of other people trying to use them, and there’s either only one stall which is an accessible stall, or only two or three so that if nobody uses the handicap stall the line becomes effectively twice or a third again as long. If it’s a large restroom with fifteen or twenty stalls, then I won’t use the handicap stall, because even if nobody uses it it won’t make much difference to how fast the line moves.

Oh, yeah. I’m not going to do that; if there’s a standard stall available, I’ll use that one.

I’d pass her on up through. If there are people present who need that stall, then I consider there to be in effect, as you say, a separate line for that stall.

I’ve heard of all of them, but haven’t eaten all of them. My absolute favorite wasn’t on the list either; but two that I like a good deal are, so I tried to vote for those two plus the other option, as the poll said three choices. However, the poll only recorded one of them – it appeared to let me vote for three, but only one showed up in the vote.

So it looks as if I just voted for MacIntosh, when actually I voted for that, Northern Spy, and Other (Cox’s Orange Pippin.)

Interesting. Macs keep longer than that in my experience. (Cox’s apparently doesn’t; which is probably why it’s never or almost never seen on the market. I have friends who have a tree.)

Yup. I picked ‘no strong opinion’ and left it at that.

Modern golf courses are often a waste of water and a massive use of pesticides, but I don’t know that that’s essential to a golf course depending on where you put it and how it’s managed, so I didn’t pick that one.

Yeah, the TEXT near the poll said to pick 3, but the poll wasn’t set up that way. Oh well, polls in Discourse can be tricky to make.

There’s an orchard up the road from us. They grow a variety called Dixie Red that is fantastic. They maintain a call list to let people know when they’re ready.

Before there was online dating, there were personal ads and phone lines, which were not covered in either poll. I met a few exes that way.

It was very odd, though; because generally when the poll’s set up for only one option, you can’t click on more than one. This poll let me make multiple selections, but only recorded one of them.

And then it wouldn’t let me go back and change the vote – it appeared to allow this but the “vote now” button was disabled. I just tried again; still like that. – OK, you’re right. If I remove two of the choices and only pick “other”, then it lets me vote. But I swear that it let me vote earlier with three choices checked, but only recorded one of them.

This was in the mid 80s, where non-commercial shipping wasn’t that great in terms of speed, care, or climate control options. And that last step from depot to house was even worse in general. Not to mention that late fall in southern NM is still damn hot sometimes, and the shorter timeframe makes sense.

Of course, I may well be misremembering as this was when I was a pre-teen, it may have been longer! One of the best things though was as the apples aged to sub-prime for out of hand eating they made the best baked apples - cored, filled with a lot of butter, sugar, cinnamon and a touch of brandy.

How long is it till fall again?
