Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

As Spock said, "If you are going to kill me whether or not I cooperate, I choose not to cooperate. "

Regarding the vehicle options poll, I want to point out that backup cameras are not a convenience option like the other choices in the poll. They are not an option at all in the US as of 2019; they are a mandatory safety feature. IMO including them in the poll is akin to asking if you want to give up seatbelts and airbags.

My current Jeep Wrangler has no backup camera, no power windows, there’s cruise control but I’ve never used it, no streaming entertainment. I feel posh using the intermittent wipers.

I’d give up cruise control if you bought me a beer.

Your right, of course, but I think it’s difficult to really appreciate even especially good episodes out of context. I’ve sometimes watched bits of shows, and then gone on to watch the entire series, and the good parts are even better when you can interpret all the nuances.

My current car came with cruise control, but it’s broken, and I don’t care.

I don’t have streaming entertainment; but I think I’d like to have a music subscription, if I could afford it. I also don’t have a backup camera, but I’d like one. Electric windows are very nice when they work, especially for people too short to easily reach the far side of the car; and a royal nuisance when they don’t, which is far more likely to happen to them than to wind-ups and more expensive to fix when it does. My previous car’s wiper relay switch broke; all the settings worked except for intermittent. Fixing that’s enough of an expensive bear that the mechanic said ‘just turn the wipers on and off once in a while’. On the current car, the intermittents work so far and I do use them.

I agree the backup camera’s different from the others. That’ll be the choice I’ll wind up keeping when this poll winds its way through the process as the previous one of these did, even though it’s something I’ve never had.

I’d really like to give up automatically-cancelling indicators/blinkers.
They are a PITA.
But i chose cruise control. Because i live in the UK and never drive
far enough to require it.

You mean the turn signal? Several years ago, the one in my car quit turning off automatically, so I have to turn it off when I’ve completed a turn. It’s something that I’ve easily learned to live with.

Maybe you need to refill the blinker fluid.

mmm

Very similar here. My state had a fantastic Governor in someone who was a progressive Republican. He was a former State Auditor and did a great job with the budget, creating a surplus fund for lean times but also seeing that children got what they needed and was pro choice. Sadly he grew older and decided not to run for governor any more. Since then, that seat has seen some charlatans (IMO) and some okay governors, but none have quite touched him.

I won’t declare my vote until I feel I know the candidate better. I choose not to belong to a political party.

Yeah, they used to exist.

I suppose some of them still might; but getting nominated is another matter.

If you do that in New York, you don’t get to vote in anybody’s primaries.

I discovered that in 1972, when I forever lost my opportunity to vote for Shirley Chisholm because of my ignorance of that rule.

Yes, we used to have that rule, but changed it. If so, I would join a political party only for the pleasure of voting against candidates who don’t suit the job.

For clarification, I mean a Republican who’s more liberal than the Democrat (in question) - liberal for the current USA overall.

Thanks for clarification.

Under the current circumstances, I’d still need to know what would happen to the balance of power in whatever branch of government’s being talked about; so still not voting in the poll. But, if that weren’t an issue in the particular case, I’d probably vote for the liberal Republican; partly to encourage the hope that maybe more of them would head in that direction.

A normal life with a billionaire? Never having to worry about where my next meal is coming from? Not having to worry about paying the rent, or struggling to find work? Still being able to go to concerts and stuff? YES, PLEASE! Do you know any cute redhead girls, Black girls, or Asian girls who are looking for this lifestyle?

Yes. The one in my last car stopped working - it was a huge improvement.
I wonder if there’s any way of disabling it on my current car.
It’s far too sensitive, eg; if there’s a slight bend before a junction, i turn the
signal on before the bend, then when i straighten up after the bend, the
signal turns off so i have to signal again.
I’d rather have full control of my signaling !

I simply can’t imagine being in a relationship with someone and knowing that they are a billionaire but not knowing that they live in a modest home and do modest stuff.

I can imagine starting a relationship with someone living in a modest house doing modest stuff, and not being told until the relationship’s clearly becoming serious that they’re a billionaire.

Me, too. But that’s not the hypothetical in the poll. And i just can’t imagine how i could end up in that situation.

Given a binary choice between vampirism or lycanthropy, clearly vampirism appears has most of the advantages. In many cases vampirism has been entered into voluntarily, you are immortal, and in most stories you get superpowers. Werewolves OTOH are almost always created against the individual’s will, in most stories they are not immortal, and are largely if not entirely not in control of their wolf-self.

I didn’t take the poll as giving any background to how the situation occurred. – oh, I think I see: you’re getting that from “turns out he/she only likes to live a normal life”? That does seem to imply that you first knew they were a billionaire and only later found out that they don’t live like most billionaires do; and I agree that it’s hard to imagine how that situation could occur.
