Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

Oh, no. Me gotta go.

I’ve actually heard this before. I feel encouraged.

I had dachshunds who couldn’t reach the stove (thankfully) and hadn’t learned how to push the chairs around.

I chose Chadwick Boseman for that one poll, and he was really close with Phil Hartman. I felt that Bozeman was just starting to get serious acclaim. And those two were at the top of the poll and nearly tied when I voted.

I’m surprised John Lennon wasn’t included in the musician
“undue the death” poll. Maybe he would have skewed the results too much.

I considered putting him in but I felt like all the others were either on the upswing or at least the prime of their careers and had much more left to contribute. None of them had seen their 30th birthday. Hell, many of them hadn’t yet seen their 25th. Van Zant was easily the oldest of all of them and he was just 29 the day he got on that plane.

Lennon OTOH had enjoyed a 20 year career at the very top of his profession. Not saying he had nothing left to contribute, but his primary legacy to popular music had arguably been long established already.

But I might go back and make another set of polls with many of the same names but organized by how they died, since most of them died in one of just three ways: an aircraft collision, murder, or drugs.

I picked Hartman but it was a Sophie’s Choice between him and Chadwick. Both were tragedies and both had a lot more left in them to give. I picked Hartman just because of my age group. He meant something to me at an important part of my life.

For musician it was Duane Allman. I wanted to see where he was going to go in music.

As for the instrument it was easy. I’m no good at any of them. As Steve Martin said, “There is a difference between the banjo and guitar. The banjo has a round drum area that projects the sound out and the guitar can get you laid.” I picked guitar.

Those great 8 sites? I have visited none of them, but there’s no option for that.

I was only ever on the outside of the Sagrada Familia but it’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. It just dominates the landscape like a giant alien insect. And I think it’s so cool that it’s an eternal work in progress. I wish I’d seen the inside, but it was closed for renovations that day.

I’m a little bit skeptical about Golden Gate Park being in the top ten. I’d guess it to be the fourth or fifth most visited tourist destination just in San Francisco.

Tourists go to the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, Alcatraz, maybe Haight-Ashbury.
Locals go to the park.

I can’t believe Union Station is a “tourist” thing. I went there to catch a train. Many others were there for the same reason.

There were only three on that list that I hadn’t been to. I’ve never been to DC, and I’ve only been to O’Hare in Chicago.

I’ve only been to the UK in Europe, and I didn’t go to the Roman Baths. I did go to Stonehenge which I would have thought would have been on the list.

I’m not much of one for popular tourist sites because I hate the crowds. But I’ve been to lots of lovely places. Never did the Louvre but I’ve been to Paris three times and adore La Chappelle. I did visit the Roman Baths in Bath, U.K. mainly because I was living just down the road, more or less. Also, it was no longer tourist season, which made the visit easier, I’m sure. I’ve also visited a couple of Roman ruin sites on my visits, one of which was recently “rediscovered”, after the interest in it waned and the tourist setup had fallen into disrepair. Friends and I had visited 30 years previous and it was already deserted. @carrps I’ve driven by Stonehenge several times but never stopped, which makes me rather sad. I agree that it is the more interesting/important site.

Yeah. I checked Grand Central, but while I’ve been there quite a few times years ago, I wasn’t there as a tourist. I was taking a train, or getting off one.

And I wasn’t really in Central Park as a tourist, either. My family had friends who lived in the city; we’d sometimes go visit them; sometimes we’d go to the Park, either because they sometimes went to the park or because it was en route to somewhere and we cut through there.

Times Square I can’t remember if I went as a tourist or if we were just doing something there, with those same friends.

For the lottery poll, it said I could pick who would win. And in all honesty (and selfishness) I’d pick myself. Hands down. Granted, a metric ton of money would also go to good causes, many tens of millions to the ACLU for example (who is already the recipient of as much money as we can manage), but I’m not altruistic enough to overcome that temptation.

Otherwise, I’d kind of rather it went to someone able to manage it without destroying themselves. No, I don’t subscribe to the theory that all poor people are stupid and foolish and will end up broke again, and affluence doesn’t protect you from the same risk (see every rock star that got rich and ended up broke again). But all those categories of people could be simultaneously worthy and needing of the funds, but also horrible: some blue collar worker who lost both legs (combining) but gives half of it to Trump!

Or a man who was working past a horrible addiction, one that ruined his life, could turn it around, and become… Mike Lindell!

Being in a bad place, and treated unfairly absolutely earns my sympathy, but it doesn’t mean that giving them a huge pile of cash will make the world a better place. Doesn’t mean it WON’T either, but if I have the choice, I have the responsibility as well.

For that matter, there are dozens of people on THIS board that qualify ( I mean, we’re more affluent on average than some), but there are plenty with medical bills and other complications that I at least know in passing. Heck, I could give it to @ThelmaLou and she could buy back her old home before she finishes settling happily into her new place. Or to @Beckdawrek to support her ongoing health challenges. Just to name two.

Tourists go to the California Academy of Sciences, the De Young Museum, and the Japanese Tea Garden, and those are in the park. Maybe they lumped all those things together and counted them all as tourists going to Golden Gate Park.

I would do the same. I like that I could control who gets to benefit, and I can’t do that by giving all the money to someone else. That only guarantees that person gets to benefit. I want more people to benefit, including those who have been kind to me here. And, yes, the ACLU too.

Why thanks. A home dialysis machine would go with my decor, nicely.

Make sure you paint it candy-apple red with FLAMES on the side. It makes it go faster, or so I’m told!

Ditto. And let’s be honest, i want to be one of the beneficiaries.

Does the dealership logo (which was already attached when I bought the car) count as an informative decoration?
