Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

I like meat and I’m fairly neutral on asparagus.

As with most vegetables I generally only like them the way I make them, i.e. generously seasoned and sauteed in butter. If it doesn’t taste good prepared that way, I probably won’t like it.

I love meat and I hate asparagus. I mean hate.

When I was a kid I was on a vacation with my grandparents and they took me to a restaurant that was in the middle of an asparagus festival. There’s a photo of me glowering next to a giant asparagus.

My grandmother, just to rub it in, bought me a nice decorative asparagus tin from their store.

I still have it.

I used to hate asparagus but like a few others I have grown to tolerate it if cooked well. Cauliflower and it’s little friend lima beans are still evil.

I don’t -think- there’s likely any correlation between enjoyment of meat and asparagus, but who knows.

I for one like meat, and like (by the polls definition) asparagus. Although like anything, I’d qualify it based on preferences and quality. Woody, tough chicken? Nope, don’t want it. Woody, tough asparagus - an equal no.

And not just with lemon butter, because that’s practically cheating. I could probably serve a piece of leather cooked in enough lemon butter to make it edible! But thin, fresh asparagus cooked hot and fast in a skillet with sliced garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil is almost as good.

I used to have a couple of asparagus plants in the garden. Really fresh asparagus, snapped off the plant and consumed immediately, raw from the garden, is delightful. Basically every other asparagus I’ve eaten was woody by comparison.

I like it drizzled in olive oil and grilled. I also like it gently steamed.

I dunno how official an Historic Neighborhood designation needs to be but the Phoenix Historic Property Register lists Encanto Manor, 1945 - 1955 as one.

Responding to the need for more homes after WWII, 52 different builders created the 84 homes that border on the northern and northeastern corner of Encanto Park Golf Course. While they are predominately large ranch style architecture, they present diverse designs and materials.

Ha ! That was unintentional …

I love both meat and asparagus. Nothing like a rare filet mignon served with steamed asparagus.

I love meat.

I had always hated asparaguts. My mother would boil or steam them. Horrible little monsters. I then tried sautéing them in bacon fat.

Everything is better when made with bacon.

Asparagus needs to be cooked only briefly. Overcooked asparagus is awful, Briefly cooked asparagus is great.

Of course, it’s possible that you just don’t like asparagus, no matter how it is or isn’t cooked.

Agree with this. When I was growing up we would have steamed asparagus - meh. As an adult I learned about grilled asparagus - yum! Simple as can be - rinse well and trim the cut end, drizzle the bunch with olive oil, sprinkle with kosher salt, toss gently to coat. Hot grill (crosswise, or they’ll fall thru LOL) for a few minutes until some charring is visible, remove from grill and enjoy as-is while still warm. Grilled asparagus was a gateway for me for other grilled veggies, like green onion/scallions, squashes, etc.

Oh, I frickin love grilled summer squash.

I like asparagus.

Meat? I can take it or leave it. It’s a convenient form of protein, but not my favorite.

I put “caffeine gum or pill” but actually if I can’t get coffee, most likely if I’m driving somewhere, I have some caffeine candy. (No kids in the house; and when there are any it’s kept out of reach.) Maybe I should have picked other. – if I had access I’d probably also have some black tea, to fill in the ‘something hot for breakfast’ place. But that doesn’t really have enough caffeine for my mornings. – I think I’m going to go back and change my vote to ‘other’. ‘An enerjet candy with hot black tea’ really isn’t ‘gum or a pill’.

I wasn’t sure what to do with those, either. I usually have a pot of tea or a cup of coffee in the morning. But i tapered off caffeine for Yom kippur, and i haven’t really gone back, yet. I ended up voting for tea and coffee, since this feels temporary. But I’m going to make either a cup of decaf or a pot of rooibos for my breakfast.

I drink tea in the morning. I don’t like coffee. If I can’t have tea I substitute it will tea. I will want hot tea first thing but if I can’t have that I’ll drink iced tea.

I start the day with a 40oz tankard of iced tea. This gets replenished as necessary as the day goes by.

On an unrelated note: You can meet a lot of your colleagues waiting for the Faculty Men’s Room to empty between periods.

I normally drink coffee at home, but sometimes black tea.

If I’m traveling overseas, I’ll drink tea as a room pretty much never has a coffee brewer, just an electric kettle, and they only give you powdered coffee  and tea bags, so tea it is!
