“Work at”? Start a bouzetique it your garage.
Could I do my job without a cell phone? Definitely. I did for many years. However, it would be more difficult. I’d be tied to the office more, or at least my home office.
I can totally do my job without a smartphone.
In order to fill out my timesheet and get paid, I do need 2-factor authentication. The easiest way to do that is with a smartphone if you have one. I could set it up with an email or a security key if I didn’t, though email could lead to another layer of 2FA turtles.
I’m currently working as a merchandiser and can’t do my job without a smart phone. I work at 10 different Walmarts, 32 Dollar Generals*, 16 Sheetz locations, 8 Rite Aids, and various mom & pop shops. The app gives me directions to the job site, tells me what the dress code is, displays my ID badge and credentials, and walks me through every step of the assignment. Without my phone I’d be totally lost.
*One of the managers told me the company’s goal is to have a DG every 5 miles. There are some towns where I can see the next store from the parking lot of the one I’m already at.
I know when my cats were born because both breeders told me their exact dates of birth.
I’m afraid that I don’t understand the sky burial question. I know what it means/entails, but what exactly is my newly Buddhist friend requesting?
That I make sure his body is left exposed when he dies?
Or that I make those arrangements for my own body?
Because I might consider the former, but the latter? No f’n way.
The aging poll doesn’t distinguish between things you’ve never done at any age, and things you don’t expect to do again because of your age.
Apparently you are a little unclear on the concept. It is more proactive than merely “left exposed”, involving flaying and feeding to vultures. I made it multiple choice so that you could select his body’s handling as well as your own, still be grossed out by it, and also have a snack.
The ageing poll should allow 11 choices, not just 8.
This was my issue as well.
mmm
I think the “feeding to vultures” is accomplished primarily by leaving it exposed in a place vultures are likely to show up. Although i suppose that just as my backyard birds learn that seeds show up in my bird feeder, the local cultures must all be aware of where human bodies are regularly placed for them.
It’s not just in Tibet. I remember reading an article about a sanitary crisis in a part of India where that was done, when there was some epidemic among the vultures, so the bodies rotted instead of being consumed promptly.
I think you’ll have trouble executing your friend’s wishes, as there are all sorts of laws governing the disposal of human bodies, and i don’t believe sky funerals are legal in any US state.
Regarding my thread on bookmarks: For those unaware of this feature in Discourse, scroll to the bottom of any thread and immediately after the last post you should see a “Bookmark” button. Press it and a “Create bookmark” dialog will appear. Then press the “Save” button to create the bookmark. When you want to revisit a page you’ve bookmarked, click on your avatar (on a desktop browser at least, this should always be in the top right corner of the screen) which activates a drop-down menu. Then press the “Bookmarks” icon, which looks like (surprise surprise) a bookmark, to see a list of links to the threads you’ve bookmarked. Clicking on any of these will automatically take you to the first unread message in the thread.
I’m on mobile and I don’t see a bookmark option. I’m using Chrome as my browser.
I tried to cover that by saying this in the intro:
Which of these things have you done in the past but realize you will probably never do again?
I was going to ask whether bookmarks were the same as tracking. I have the Polls and Discussion threads set to Tracking, and that’s how I keep track of them, but that didn’t seem to match any of the choices.
Bookmarks is a separate thing. I don’t find it super useful, as i can only bookmark a post, not a thread, so if i click on the bookmark it takes me to some random point in the past, when i decided to create the bookmark.
I think tracking works better.
Tracking, not bookmark.

I tried to cover that by saying this in the intro:
Which of these things have you done in the past but realize you will probably never do again?
Yes, I know.
But you can’t tell by my answers whether I’ve never done them in the past, or have done them but probably won’t do again. That’s what I meant by the poll not distinguishing between them.
I actually usually navigate to these particular threads by just leaving the tabs open, so when I want to refer back and forth between them I don’t have to go looking on the main page; otherwise I usually navigate to them from “unread” which is pretty much set to show me only threads I’ve posted in. As neither of those were options I said I’d get to them from the SDMB main page, because I do sometimes get to them that way; but that’s less common.
It’s possible you’re putting entirely too much thought and effort into what is essentially entertainment. That’s just a possibility, though.
But I find it entertaining to do so!
