I don’t think either of our cars has a locking glove compartment, but I never locked the last one I remember having a lock. Seriously, if someone’s gotten into the car, which I always do lock, is the flimsy little lock on the glove compartment going to stop them from getting into it?
I don’t keep gloves in there. I want to keep my warm gloves in the house so they aren’t freezing when I put them on. I hadn’t thought about surgical gloves, but the last time I tried keeping a first-aid kit in the car, everything in it degraded in the heat. Nowadays, I only bring one on long trips.
As I believe I’ve said in other threads ad nauseam, I’m retired. I’d consider a casual volunteer position, but I’m not going to accept even a part-time job (this, by the way, is why it’s so hard to manage volunteers). I’ve been a moderator for a smaller board in the past, so I’m aware of some of the headaches involved, but I’m willing to step up where needed. Um, this is a complete hypothetical, right??
Gloves, in the inside pocket of my jacket, which I -try- to leave in the car. Which has a backup heavy pull-over and flannel for Colorado weather when I forgot I left my jacket on my chair after going out to shovel. Yes, this has happened.
As for being a mod, I picked willing for pay at minimum wage + for part time. For full time, it would have to be for more than minimum wage. I mean, I deal with plenty of assholes IRL for pay almost all of whom are uninteresting, so I’d do it here for a higher class interesting jerks!
Maybe, maaaaaaaybe I’d be willing to mod for limited (say the 5 hours minimum of the poll) on a volunteer, or more likely substitute basis for free. IE be a part-time mod when someone needs to take a couple of days off for real life or something. But probably not for super-charged forums like P&E.
Although as others have said, with my flag success, I’m guessing it would only be a matter of time before I’d be asked to leave.
As long as it is served with crawfish pie and a file gumbo,
They send me a “so you want to be a SDMB moderator” questionnaire many years ago, but I didnt have the time. Now, I am too controversial. (Mind you, it was clear that wasnt an offer, just a chance to apply).
Given my current state of employment (not enough), I’d be thrilled at a guaranteed 40 hours a week at the hourly rate I currently make as a contractor.
I’m sure it’d be a pain in the ass at times (what job isn’t?), but it would certainly be interesting, and I could work from home. Or from not-home should I so choose.
I started one of the books and didn’t finish. Someone gave me a dvd of one of the movies. Both times I tried to watch it, I fell asleep. I guess it’s not that appealing to me.
I should have read the rest of your post before replying, but, yes, the dvd I was given seemed to be 90% dark CGI action/battle scenes that put my brain right to sleep.
I might drink from a straw in a restaurant. It would depend on the drink; and possibly on whether they’d already unwrapped the thing, in which case they’re going to throw it out anyway.
Yes to it depending on the drink, but also depending on the restaurant. Some are obviously not as clean as they could be. If that’s the case, I use the straw.
I just don’t enjoy drinking from a straw. If I’m thirsty, I can get a nice gulp politely from a glass. From a straw I look like an idiot determinedly inhaling a cup of liquid over a minute’s time.
I don’t like drinking from a straw, but whenever a restaurant brings me one, there’s this little voice in my head asking me what are they trying to tell you about the cleanliness of the glasses?
I’m not saying it’s rational, I’m just saying it’s what happens.
Huh. I really like drinking from straws. I don’t generally do it unless they give me one… Or sometimes, i use my own straw for hot coffee. Yes, hot coffee is easy better if it cools in the straw and i don’t risk burning my mouth. But i enjoy straws in general.
On the issue of the spoiler in the poll, there is a practical reason that they would be broken: clicking anywhere on the text selects that option, so clicking on the spoiler would be read as selecting that option. Discourse might, in the future, add some code that allows a poll entry to not read a spoiler click, but corner-case coding is a nuisance.
As to straws, if I am served a shake or float, I should prefer to have a straw in it. I could go either way with lassi.
I used to always use a straw for cold drinks, but after using products for sensitive teeth for long enough, it’s possible for me to drink straight out of the glass. Nowadays, I decline a straw if I’m asked. Nevertheless, if a server brought me a glass with a straw already in it, I’d go ahead and use it. And I do want a straw for a milkshake or float.
I could have seen myself voting for McCain in 2000, if he’d made it out of the GOP primaries, but by 2008 he’d moved sharply to the right. Romney also ran in 2012 as more conservative than I think he really was. Both had more brains and principles than Trump, but would have appointed more conservatives to SCOTUS, so no thanks.
Aragorn, Frodo and Gandalf are my favorite LOTR characters. I like Legolas, too, but that Helm’s Deep shieldboarding scene still just makes me roll my eyes.
I never use my smartphone for my job. I could easily get by without it for that.
Love Pop-Tarts! Frosted strawberry or raspberry, please - room temp in summer; broken in half and nuked for 20 seconds or so in the winter. A college friend of my sister spreads butter on her Pop-Tarts; I gather that’s a Baltimore thing.
In Latin America, was Three Amigos called Tres Friends?
I think sky burials are kind of gross, but wouldn’t interfere in others’ culture. I do wish more people in the US would donate their bodies for organ harvesting and medical education after death, and have long supported changing the legal presumption in favor of that, unless the decedent had clearly refused permission while alive.
I was asked awhile back to consider being a mod, and was flattered, but didn’t have the time and suspected it would take a lot of the fun out of the SDMB for me.
I have never in my life worried about a dirty glass in a restaurant. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, it just never occurs to me to think about that particular problem. Unless I see it, in which case I’ll ask for a clean one.
I’ll agree with others, though, a straw isn’t part of the solution to that particular problem.
If a restaurant regularly serves drinks with straws, why would there be lipstick on the glass? I guess some people may choose not to use the straw. But I too have never worried about a dirty glass in a restaurant. If you’re worried that the glass might be dirty, wouldn’t you also be worried that the plates and silverware might be dirty?
