I live in suburban Chicago; when I’m driving locally, I rarely use it, unless it’s while I’m on the highway, late at night. Otherwise, there’s just too much traffic, and it’s not feasible or safe to try to use cruise control.
When I’m making long-distance trips, such as when I drive up to Wisconsin to see my parents, I nearly always use it, unless traffic and/or road conditions are bad.
Yeah, in the early days just from Boeing there was the 707, 727, 737, and (later) the 757, each designed for a particular “mission”. Today the 737 has evolved into a jack of all trades that can do everything the 727 could do, and like 90% of what the 757 could do. And in practice most of the routes that would have been flown with a 737-100/200 a few decades ago are probably flown with regional jets today, so they effectively fulfill the 737’s original mission.
I’ve used it very rarely but admit that it was almost worthwhile when I had a sprained ankle. Almost. One of the reasons it bothers me is because I think that drivers who use it are at risk of being too relaxed when driving and not paying close attention to the road around them. When your foot is on the gas, you must pay attention.
It is also very irritating to be behind people who are using it especially when they move into a faster-moving lane of traffic.
When I was working and something had to end or start at 12:00 a.m. or 0000, I always used 11:59 p.m. and 12:01 a.m. or 2359 and 0001 to make sure there was no confusion on anyone’s part. That was easier than having multiple emails about which day I meant. And, yes, you would think everyone knows that a.m. and 0000 would signify the day beginning. I can assure you that is not true.
I have always heard that airlines try to avoid scheduling redeye flights that depart at exactly midnight specifically to avoid that confusion. If a flight is scheduled to depart at 12:00 am, half the passengers show up at the airport on the wrong day.
12:00 midnight is ambiguous as to which day. But I don’t think it’s necessary to use 24 hour time to avoid it; that in itself will be confusing if you’re dealing with a group of people who don’t generally use it.
I’d probably either pick a different time, or say “12:00 between Monday and Tuesday”, or say “midnight Monday night”, or something else of the sort.
I can testify I took a flight to Taipei just last week that departed SFO at 12:05 am Saturday. I double and triple checked that I had the right day even then.
Some newer vehicles (maybe a lot, not sure) have cruise that is designed for traffic. You set the speed you want to go and sometimes the following distance, nd it keeps you either at speed or at distance. It’s wicked creepy and kind of great.
I was driving my friend’s F-350 (hauling a horse trailer too), taking my turn at driving on a trip between SC and KY. In my own car I don’t even have cruise control, so it was pretty freaky at first to hand control over to the truck, but after a while it was really nice. I couldn’t stand to let it take total control, but for those times when you’re going a set speed behind a car and the one in front slows just a little bit, it meant that I didn’t have to tap out of cruise and reset or pull out and pass. Really quite nice on a long drive, especially with the added stress of hauling horses in a giant rig that wasn’t mine!
I know I wasn’t being precise with the language of my living arrangements poll. It was on purpose. I feel that most people think of a condo as an apartment you buy. I have an attached townhouse that is a condo. It just means I have no responsibility or ownership of the outside of the house and don’t own any of the property. I don’t think anyone would look at it and think “condo.” Other townhouses in the area are under different ownership rules and the owners have responsibility for the exterior and own some of the land. By looking at them you wouldn’t know the difference.
In that case, I don’t have a condo, but I don’t have “a multilevel condominium/townhouse” either. I guess I’m “other”? (Not complaining, just observing)
For what it’s worth, the part about 24 hour time was essentially the joke portion of that response. If you think 12:00 am is in any way too ambiguous, that is the option for you.
So even if you did vote in the poll, in my heart you have voted for that option.
