Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

If i have to shower at 4pm, odds are my clothes are dirty.

That’s what I was thinking: if I’m showering at that hour, it’s because I really needed one. Rewearing my dirty clothes would defeat the purpose.

For some events like Oscars night or an election we’ll have running comment threads that are pretty close to real-time.

If I shower at 4, it’s typically not because I have to, but rather because I want to. That is, we are likely going out for dinner/drinks and I want to be “fresh”.

So I’ll likely put on my party clothes in place of the utilitarian clothes I likely had on all day.

(I do this often)

I do that rarely, but in those cases, I’m doing it in part because i plan to change clothes, so 100% of those times.

Other reasons i shower in the middle of the day are because I’ve done something very sweaty or dirty (like gardening) and in both those cases, of course i also change my clothes.

I guess if i showered because i went to a public pool and was required to shower, I’d wear the same clothes after.

I am a Grants Manager at a medium sized nonprofit. I am responsible for the procurement and administration of all corporate, foundation and government grants. I don’t think there’s anything I could be doing that I would enjoy more, except perhaps being paid to write fiction. I love the people I work with - they are all brilliant and compassionate. The work itself is highly rewarding, going beyond direct service programming to include strategic planning at my organization and larger-scale efforts to transform policy and protocol across the state. There is nothing happening in my state around issues of domestic violence or sexual assault that my agency doesn’t somehow have its hands in. I am involved at every level of the agency, working mostly with Executive Leadership and program directors to identify and communicate needs to funders. I am the resident Cat Herder, telling people what I need from them and when, and it usually works out. (The only true frustration of my job is people dragging their feet on stuff I need.)

And best of all - I get to write stuff! I love writing stuff, especially new stuff. Writing grants for new projects is a rewarding creative endeavor to me. Then of course there’s the tangible reward of actual checks.

I recently joined the county housing alliance board to learn more about homeless services from a domestic violence perspective. So there is always something new to learn.

I have eight years of tenure so people actually listen to me, and I am continually challenged to solve difficult problems that result in better services to survivors. On top of that I am pretty well paid for a nonprofit admin, I’m not expected to work a full 40 hours, I have a highly flexible work schedule, mostly remote, and I have about four weeks of vacation a year.

I’m not sure how I lucked into this but I’m not going anywhere anytime soon.

I love my job; I love my work, and I have a fantastic boss, who suits me perfectly.

(I am my boss.)

I white-knuckled through the last three years of my crappy job, just long enough to qualify for retirement. I was responsible for maintaining a lot of data, but I had absolutely no authority over the people who needed to do their parts so I could compile it. The general public could (and did!) come in and yell at me about things Ihad no control over. My job description had expanded to cover the work that two people used to do, but I didn’t get paid any more, and my boss expected me to work unpaid overtime to get it all done. My colleagues had become increasingly unhappy with their working conditions and with each other, and they would complain to me about it because I was at the front desk and couldn’t avoid them. And children were rude to me daily.

I don’t miss working even a little.

That post should possibly also go in the “Why Aren’t People Working” thread.

In the pig poll, one I selected was Arnold from Green Acres. He was smarter than most of the people in the show.

Freddy the Pig.

Considering we have a long-time Doper named after him, his omission from the list is inexcusable.

Missing favorite pigs:

Toot & Puddle
Orson from Garfield and Friends
Hamilton from Tiny Toons

The earliest real car possible, just for bragging rights. I’d also sell my sister to the Martians for a ride in that Shelby, preferably on a good race track with a competent driver.

I was torn about the cars! It was really close between the Triumph Roadster, for the combination of cool, fast, and open-top, and the Datsun 240Z for personal nostalgia.

This is exactly why I chose it. I was 14 in '72 and there was something about that car that made Young Master Mustard vow that he would get one some day.

(spoiler: he never did)

mmm

I chose the '49 Beetle, due to a lifelong love of Beetles, and that I’ve never had a chance to ride in one nearly that old.

I want a ride in a car not on their list. I want a ride in whatever year that old MG was that my father had in the 1950’s. It was old then, had running boards and a cloth convertible top, and IIRC had originally come without windshield wipers. But they don’t seem to have any MG’s at all.

They have a 1980 MGB, but it didn’t make into the poll.

Norman, coordinate!

My signature is the only time I use cursive anymore, so chose the NOTA option tho “Almost never” would have worked, I guess.
