I have a lot of recurring anxiety dreams. A common one is not being able to find where I parked my car. A couple of years ago this happened to me in real life (I was at a large medical facility I hadn’t been to before, and got confused and was looking in the wrong parking lot). It wasn’t nearly as distressing as it is when it happens in my dreams.
I think a lot of dream themes are common to a lot of people, but here’s one I have that I bet is not very common: I look in my pet rats’ cage and discover extra rats that I didn’t know I had. In the dream this is very distressing; I start thinking that I haven’t been giving them enough food.
I just say “eastern time” or “pacific time”; I don’t really know whether it’s daylight or standard this time of year, and can’t think of a a compelling reason why I need to.
I don’t agree. I deal with the public at my job, and the vast majority of people I encounter are perfectly nice. The surprisingly large number of people who, say, can’t grasp the general concept of how tickets work, aren’t necessarily assholes.
The assholes are the ones that think the rules shouldn’t apply to them, not that they don’t understand the rules.
I know all these bands. Mott the Hoople and Fairport Convention both have good odds of getting in, but I’d love to see Pere Ubu inducted. David Thomas has survived a lot of health problems, and it would be a delight to see him get in a big public performance sometime soon.
A friend of mine just pointed out that my mind is making up things for me to stress about. She was right. Though it sucks, at least you know you are not alone in this.
Regarding EST, EDT etc. Depending on audience and need for clarity, I will include this information. Can’t wait for CDT!
I was a little surprised at how few people in the poll had heard of them. But yeah, they’re one of those obscure cult classic bands that are highly regarded but that many people haven’t heard of. To quote Wikipedia:
If you’ve watched That 70s Show, you’ve heard their song “In The Street” (albeit maybe in a cover version by Cheap Trick). If you’ve listened to The Bangles’ best-selling album Different Light, you’ve heard their cover of Big Star’s “September Gurls.”
Oh I just noticed that squeegee’s poll a couple of weeks ago mentioned a “safety deposit box”. A “safe deposit box” is a deposit box in a safe. There’s no such thing as a “safety deposit box”. Maybe that’s why so few people answered that they have one.
The only time I’ve found it necessary to mention the time zone was in the military and then it was Zulu time. When everyone is in the same time zone you just have to say 3:00PM.
I often have to coordinate projects across time zones. When I issues the invites, Outlook automatically converts Central (my time) to Eastern and Mountain. I still spell out “8:00 PM D(S/D)*T / 9:00 PM E(D/S)T”
If it’s 10 o’clock Pacific time, it’s 11 o’clock in Denver. So I’ll just say “10 o’clock Pacific”. Maybe I’ll add “that’s 11 o’clock your time” usually, I let them figure it out, because I sometimes go the wrong direction.
I don’t see what is gained by including whether it’s daylight time or saving time.
Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so adding the D or S might help them remember whether they’re on the same hour as the rest of their time zone or not.
But that’s the only practical reason I can think of, and if you choose to be different than the rest of the country, it ought to be your own responsibility to figure it out.
I don’t specify time zones unless the person getting my email, call or letter is in another time zone.
I usually can’t remember my dreams, but I do remember the mood they leave me in. A really good dream can have me waking with a smile. My wife and I talk about our dreams occasionally, if they were weird or interesting in some way. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had a nightmare, fortunately.
