I’ve been to a number of Buddhist funerals and black is not that culture’s color of mourning. I have worn white to those, because that is the color of mourning for the people whose funeral it was.
I’m the funeral poll there was no option for “I don’t do funerals”.
Technically, I have never worn black to a funeral.
But, for most of my adult life, my wedding/funeral/job interview suit was “midnight blue”, which is pretty close to black.
I always wear a suit to funerals, but my suits aren’t technically “all black.”
I don’t listen much to John Denver any more, but when I was a pre-teen and teenager, he was one of my favorite singers. My three choices in the poll were “Rocky Mountain High,” “Calypso,” and “other”: specifically, “The Eagle and the Hawk.”
I havent been to any funerals in the last couple of decades.
Best sitcom theme tunes:
- The Golden Girls. As a kid, I always imagined it was Blanche singing, and she was my favourite character. (Now that I’m older and wiser, I prefer Dorothy.)
- Cheers. You couldn’t ask for a more perfect set of lyrics. And over those opening titles, they really struck a chord.
- Three’s Company. You can’t go wrong with Joe Raposo and his ever-present glockenspiel. He did a lot of great work for Sesame Street too, and many other shows.
There are lots of other great themes on the list. Hearing the ones for That '70s Show and Taxi night after night led me to acquire and enjoy albums by their composers, Big Star and Bob James, respectively.
That’s all I’m saying.
That’s another good one. I’m only disappointed that you didn’t link to the version he did with the Muppets.
I voted for the theme songs from Cheers, Happy Days, and The Monkees, but the actual answer is WKRP in Cincinnati. (Especially if I can include the song that played over the closing credits.)
And, honorable mention to the theme from The Rockford Files, by Mike Post.
I also voted the eagle and the hawk. And I’m not really sure whether I’ve ever worn all black to a funeral. Despite wearing “female clothing” i usually wear a black suit (with slacks) to funerals. And i think I’ve worn a black shirt with that when i was a mourner, but i wouldn’t swear to it.
Thanks for that. Discourse has been refusing to let me post images and videos today, even with all the usual tricks and workarounds discussed elsethread.
I endorse these all, and happy to find a fan of the last one, which is much more rare in rotation!
We’re in good company as well.
On Happy Days, I liked when they used Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock”, but did not like when they changed to a bespoke theme song.
On The Partridge Family, I liked “Come On, Get Happy”, but did not like “Hear Us Singing”.
I like the MASH theme song, but prefer the version with sung lyrics, which never played in the TV series.
I voted for Malcolm, Taxi and The Monkees. The actual answer is Barney Miller.
The sitcom theme song poll was missing the obviously correct answer, The Beverly Hillbillies, so I voted for the second best, The Addams Family.
When I was about 8, my parents gave me the John Denver’s Greatest Hits LP as a Christmas present; I played that album – and that song, in particular, to death.
Sharing it here, for those who are unfamiliar:
While we’re sharing, that album, along with Fame and Flashdance soundtracks were among the family favorites during drives from Las Cruces NM to Colorado which were at least a alternating annual event for us.
Most of my family would sing along with over half that album.
I have it on CD as well.
Truth. I enjoy all the themes from the 1960s CBS “rural” trifecta: The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and especially Green Acres (which, incidentally, was written by the same guy who wrote the Addams Family theme, Vic Mizzy.)
And since we’re going off-list, I have to mention I Dream of Jeannie, The Odd Couple, and My Three Sons. And I second Barney Miller.
I’m a guy and I’ve never worn a black shirt to a funeral. A black suit, white shirt, and black or dark grey tie, yes. But that’s not “all black”.
