Wow, I had completely forgotten about that. And his less than glorious end happened locally even. I can now remember seeing the hotel siege on the local news.
I tend to steer clear of anybody preaching at me. I saw through all that when I was in elementary school, and now it’s hyper annoying.
For someone who advertises with Bible verses, I went with “depends”. All else being equal I’d probably choose another business, but that’s rarely the case. Cost, ease of access, lack of alternates, and of course, the degree of preachyness will all contribute.
My only recent direct example is with my default Chinese delivery/carry out option, a place called Overseas 101, which has a reasonably large Cross directly next to the name on the menu, and a message “Jesus Loves You” below the name.
But, that’s it. They don’t preach to you, they don’t otherwise talk about it in any way, it’s just on the menu (In person and takeout).
It’s the only Chinese place in delivery range, and while it’s a terribly typical strip-mall take out place, it’s fine if you’re just craving a quick shrimp-fried-rice and it’s directly on my way home for work. But since I’m a good cook, I order once or twice a year at most.
By comparison, there’s another place, a bit further away, a bit harder to get in and out of, and a bit pricier, but with better food, so nearly a net wash. If it’s NOT delivery, and it’s not take out on the way home, then they’re what I choose the rest of the time.
Probably the only reason I know about the Kray brothers is because of the trivia that they were played by Gary and Martin Kemp of the band Spandau Ballet in that movie.
A slightly different take on the John 3:16 question, as a Christian.
My reading of the Cleansing of the temple story is that people were using their religion and by extension God, to make money. And that really pissed off Jesus. As far as I am concerned, any business that makes a big deal of how Christian they are is doing the same thing
I think we’re about the same age. My parents bought that album and then recorded it on a cassette which I was allowed to play. It, plus Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Cleo Laine, and the soundtrack from Man of La Mancha, is the soundtrack of my childhood.
Ronnie Biggs has been depicted in various movies and even a TV miniseries, though I’m not sure how popular they were outside Britain. (Has anyone here besides me watched Mrs. Biggs?) He might perhaps be better known internationally through his association with the Sex Pistols, or rather what was left of them following the departure of Johnny Rotten. He sang on one of their singles, and the lyrics prominently mention some of the other British criminals in the poll.
The only British criminals in the poll that I’d heard of were the Kray brothers, and that was likely due to films (not sure if it was The Krays or Legend).
