I’ve never heard it called a Jersey barrier in my life.
Me neither. But then, I’ve never been anywhere near Jersey.
I’ve pretty much only heard them called Jersey barriers. If not that, then some descriptive that indicates that the person doesn’t know what they are called.
We call it that in Washington State. Quite a distance from Jersey, and New Jersey too.
I’ve only ever heard them called K-rails, but I didn’t hear that until just a few years ago; I would have called them “concrete barriers,” but as a description, not a name.
That’s the first term I’d heard applied to them, as well, and I’ve never lived on the East Coast. I think I first heard the term sometime in the '90s, though I have since also heard them referred to as K-rails.
One restaurant I worked in decided to chince out and dropped their knife sharpening service. It was an unmitigated disaster. Prep work ended up taking much longer, often lasting until the Lunch Rush, and knife accidents went up from nearly zero to about once a day.
Keep your knives sharp!
Sadly, there is a divot in the line: West Wendover is the only part of Nevada on Mountain Time.
In that case, if I celebrated the first New Years at the casino in West Wendover, and then immediately started driving west on I-80, I could just barely make it to Wells, NV in time to celebrate again – Google Maps says the drive takes 55 minutes. I can’t find any bars there, but there appears to be a small casino in the Flying J Travel Center (that very much seem like an “only in Nevada” thing). I suppose I could celebrate there.
Not that that changes my poll answer; I’d still have to travel over 500 from my home to get to West Wendover.
I’d never heard the term jersey barrier until I moved to New England.
Whuuuuu???
Having followed the link and read the definition:
Whuuuuu???
[ETA: I could tie a four-arm kniffen on the north Fribolen, though.]
I like a Green’s function as well as anyone, but what brought them up?
I like all vegetables, if they’re prepared well. Even lima beans
The poll leaves out peppers, which is the only vegetable i despise. It also leaves out tomatoes, onions, and garlic, which are awfully common. I guess onion and garlic aren’t usually served as a side dish by themselves, they are typically an ingredient. But roast peppers and sliced tomatoes are pretty common.
I really like Lima beans. Surprised to see so much hate for them.
Yeah I like all the veggies in the poll, but I had to pick one as the least favorite and it was lima beans. However, I avoid black beans whenever I can due to a bad experience with them years ago. If given the choice between the two it would be lima beans all the way.
I saw something recently about Jersey barriers, or I would not have had a name for them.
What interested me was that their shape is functional. They are designed to be used where they separate oncoming traffic. If the barrier doesn’t stop the car, it redirects it back into the side it came from, so that the automobile doesn’t end up jumping into oncoming traffic.
Mrs Magill is not a fan of lima beans. I love them.
Another anti-pepper person. I love the hotness but hate the flavour, so tiny, very hot peppers are good, and bell peppers of any colour are evil. Otherwise, while I’m not a fan, I can manage the rest.
I have told this story before, my partner and I worked security at a smaller Grateful dead concert in LA. (there were others, mind you). Some manager mister came out and apologized since we really worked hard- and gave us each a smallish concert bill with “this guy gets in free” on it with his signature. I had doubts. Anyway, sometime later they were back, and I went and showed the paper- expecting a “haha”- but they gave me a backstage pass and everything. I can say I met the band- but it was really standing in a corridor (with others) as they went by, and i am pretty sure one of them said “Hi”. Later that year, I got a Jerry Garcia Christmas tie in the mail with a little card- the signature was printed. I still have the tie, it is pretty cool.
I dont remember much of either concert.
I somehow ended up backstage at a juggling show that was held at the kind of theater where Broadway shows are played. That’s the closest I’ve been to backstage at a concert.
