Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

“Skosh”, folks.

Isn’t a skosh a slosh or a schmeer of something?

“Scoot.” no “ch.”

To me, all those are the same word.

The “one, two, buckle your shoe” thing really brings back memories. When my daughter started school, she wanted to prepare her little brother for school. She would set up a classroom in the living room and act as teacher.

Thing is, my son absolutely hated the whole idea. So she would ask him, “One, two, buckle your ____?” And he would reply, “MEATBALL!”

No idea where he got meatball, but it would frustrate his sister and eventually lead her to tears, which was his goal.

It’s amazing they are now best friends.

Scoot over, I need a skosh more room.

Other.

Discobot a) doesn’t mean anything and b) is annoying. The people who wrote its code probably meant well; but they ought to know that it’s annoying.

This is exactly my take on it.

Discobot is a pleasant companion compared to Clippy/Clippit.

:paperclip: :heavy_plus_sign: :fire: :heavy_equals_sign: :joy:

I am familiar with the up-to-twenty version, with a few discrepancies:

On eleven, twelve, they say “Who will delve”. The version I learned: “Dig and delve”.
On nineteen, twenty, they say “Of strawberries plenty.” I learned" “My cup’s empty”.

mmm

Yes. I also feel this way about many children.

To me, “shut” just sounds wrong for some reason. That probably means I learned it as “open”.

@discobot Why do people hate you so much?

Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help.

See? That’s why!

I learned “Dig and delve” too. I don’t remember what came after that though.

Right turn lanes that can go straight- it depends on why the driver is in that lane.

Re: the traffic light situation: I was in the minority that would have gotten in the left hand lane. But in the vast majority of cases the right lane tends to have fewer vehicles in it.

Here in California, the streets wide enough to have two lanes each way have enough room in the right lane for a passenger vehicle to turn right while a car going straight sits next to the line on the left-hand side of the lane.

This turning right while someone else is going straight is something I encounter half a dozen times a day while driving in Los Angeles. Most of the time everything goes smoothly

What is annoying is when the driver going straight decides to position their vehicle in the “center of the lane”, effectively blocking anyone wanting to turn right (as well as the rarer case where there is plenty of room on the right side of the vehicle going straight, but the guy turning right just cocks their vehicle into the right, but doesn’t pull to the right side of the other vehicle, again blocking everyone else from turning right).

I admit to thinking uncharitable thoughts in the 2 lane situation when I’m actually experiencing it in-car as it were. I almost always chide myself for it, since, yeah, it’s not like they were doing anything wrong, and for that matter, in most cases, I have no idea where they’re going: they may need to make a right turn at the next intersection, so they’re just being prudent.

So I needed an option for “they’re not being rude, but I’m still feeling judge-y anyway”.
