Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

Yep, I buy books from Amazon, from Barnes & Noble store, from Amazon partners on Amazon, from Facebook, from library sales, from…

Only time I ever went to the ER for myself was ten years ago, for hyponatraemia.

So, there I was in the ER the other day thinking that it was only my second time ever in my whole life, and then I suddenly remembered how many times I had to get stitches when I was a kid/pre-teen…seems like I went everywhere barefoot, and that was not the best idea. Plus, there was sharp stuff everywhere…Jarts, barbed wire, broken bottles. Maybe 4, 5 times I got stitched up.

Plus, a kidney stone and a gallbladder event, so I said 6-10.

I have a fire extinguisher in my pickup.

I have a first aid kit, and jumper cables, and the stuff that came with the car. Oh, and a spare pair of glasses. I felt like all the choices were either a lot more or somewhat less than what i carry.

Somewhere around a dozen ER visits in my lifetime.

  • Went through a window face-first when I was 5, requiring stitches
  • Fell off an upper bunk in college, gashed my forehead open upon reaching the ground, requiring butterfly tape
  • Four kidney stones
  • Very high fever when I was in high school
  • Broken wrist
  • Broken elbow
  • Several other assorted visits for things that seemed bad, but turned out to not be

For the ER, 2 actual visits to the ER for myself.

But, maaaaaybe one or two of the 5-7 visits to Urgent Care would have counted. I seriously doubt it, other than the one time I got dangerously dehydrated with a stomach bug, but just maybe.

(since the poll specified urgent care that would have required an ER should also count)

I have a window punch / seat belt cutter on my pocket knife & yes, I’ve used it (in VRT training). The spring loaded ones are much easier to use.

I didn’t stop seeing long-distance SO when pandemic hit but I did have to pee roadside once or twice as all of the restaurants & other businesses were closed. I threw a roll of TP in the car, just in case. It’s still there, under the seat; luckily unused.

My “worst” trip to the ER was when I cut my finger, badly, while on duty at the ambulance. The shit I got that night!

Spare glasses for each of us

Warning Triangle (required by law)
High Visibility Vest (not required where we are, but highly recommended as bordering countries do require it)

Okay, that’s freaky.

ER once, maybe a dozen years ago- i fell gashing my forehead, my wife insisted we go to ER, sadly Urgent Care had just closed- since that would have worked also.

Just counting myself I’ve probably gone to the ER between 11-15 times. If we count taking other people it’s too high to count.

I did have to think deeply when Arnold Schwarzenegger ran vs Grey Davis. IIRC, that was the last time I voted R. The Governator did okay.

This could be considered a painful confession, but during the leadup to the McCain/Obama election, I honestly felt that McCain was more qualified in terms of running the country, and felt that while wrong on a number of issues, would do a better job of running the government. And he was “wrong” within normal parameters on said issues.

But, I felt that it sent the right message to the rest of America and the world that Obama be elected, to prove that it could happen, and that (duh) I agreed a lot more with Obama on almost any social issue.

So I admit to some equivocation, but the above, plus Obama’s far superior charisma and ability to lead not just govern made the final decision for him fully, not just half-heartedly.

I feel that circumstances more than proved my choice correct, but you may feel free to boo me for even doubting if you feel the need too.

Used to be a Republican, until they recruited the “Moral Majority” as shock troops. In the years since I’ve moved to the Left, while the Repugs have sprinted to the Reich.

But I’ve never been uncertain as to who I would vote for. Often wrong, but never uncertain.

The first presidential election for which I was old enough to vote was 1984. Judge if you must, but my young self admired Ronald Reagan, and the Republican Party had not yet lost its collective mind.

I remember giving much thought to the decision between Reagan and Mondale, and that was the first and last time I voted R.

My first presidential election vote required me to choose between Nixon and Humphrey. I wrote in Pat Paulson (as did a lot of my friends. College students, you know.) Another election (I forget which one) I wrote in Snoopy. I think that for the majority of the many presidential elections in my lifetime, I have found myself having to choose between Tweedledum and Tweedledee. I was surprised to see how many dopers so often find the choice an easy one.

Mine was Nixon/McGovern. I’ve never voted for a Republican for President. Ever.

Nixon/McGovern would have been an easy choice. (In fact, we had a mock election in my class --fifth or 6th grade. Nixon won and I was pissed)

Nothing since has caused me to hesitate for a moment before choosing the Democrat.

Although a Dem down to my toes, I’ve voted for Republicans for local offices now and then when I believed they were the better candidates in those particular races (especially for judgeships). I’ve rarely voted for Republicans for statewide office, and certainly not recently. The last time I considered voting for a Republican for President was in 2000, while the primaries were still underway, when I considered John McCain someone whom I could possibly support. Then Dubya got the GOP nomination, and that was it; I thought Gore, for all his faults, was far preferable to him. I don’t believe I’ve ever voted for a Republican for any Federal office.
