I prefer Turkish coffee, but it’s a pain in the ass to make and never seems as good as buying it. So I do drip. Or tea.
K-cup always struck me as ridiculous - 10x (100x?) the price per cup, 10x (100x?) the landfill impact. Such a waste of a plentiful and otherwise super cheap item commoditized into a silly form.
I use a Chemex filter in a Chemex filter holder, so that’s what I marked (though it’s balanced over an enamel on steel coffee pot, the original glass Chemex having broken many many years ago.)
But I classify that as drip. It’s basically working the same way as my mother’s old aluminum drip pot, which substitutes a metal basket with tiny holes in it for a filter.
The coffee poll was hard, as we’re a hybrid coffee / tea household, with both being drunk on a daily basis. And we have a LOT of coffee options. What gets used in descending order of frequency: French Press, K-cup (reusable cup), K-cup (disposable cup), Cold Brew Carafe, Instant.
For tea, once again in descending order: Loose leaf tea (hot) in tea ball, loose leave tea (in disposable fabric tea bag), commercial tea bag, commercial tea bag (hot brewed for iced tea), commercial tea bag (sun tea)
I voted “I don’t do hot caffeinated beverages,” but I do drink hot chocolate once in a while, which is hot and has caffeine and wasn’t in the poll. Diet soda provides 99% of my caffeine needs, though.
I’m reminded of a PostSecret story, where a man said that he and his girlfriend were walking on a beach when an airplane flew by towing a banner reading “Will you marry me?” She thought it was for her and got so excited that he couldn’t bear to tell her it wasn’t, so he proposed on the spot (sans ring) and - well, they got married.
I first met my future wife in middle school. We dated in the 10th grade. After graduation we had no contact for 12 years, then we literally ran into each other one day and began dating again. Moved in together after 6 months. Proposed 4 years after that. Married 1 year after that.
My nephew didn’t believe me about NFL refs and the starter pistol.
I can remember the first skywriting I ever saw. I was little (6 or 7) and playing at my friend’s house about five blocks from home. The message was: No Arms for Tito. So, you can guess how long ago that was! I had to ask my mom what it meant. I don’t think I really understood until years later. I’ve seen a ton of skywriting since then.
I have never proposed nor been proposed to, but the poll reminded me of my parents. I know they first met in February 1975, and they got married in August 1975, in other words about 6 months later. But they will not tell my sister and me when they got engaged. I’m not sure it that means they got engaged very soon after they started dating, or if after dating for six months they just decided to go down to city hall and get married.
I have a vague recollection of reading something about starter pistols, but I have no clear idea for which sport; though I seem to have it associated more with racing. And the NFL use seems more like a stopping pistol, anyway.
We had a 12-“cup” electric vacuum brewer that made awesome coffee (but you had to wedge something under the carafe to make it brew for several minutes instead of drawing down just about as soon as it was up). Unfortunately, several years’ daily use resulted in a stress fracture that rendered it non-functional right about the same time they became no longer obtainable.
I drink a lot of coffee, for better or worse, and I don’t have the time or patience for anything fussierc than an automatic drip coffeemaker. We have one of those little baskets with the fine wire mesh that I used instead of filters for a while, but I was wasting a lot of water washing it out, and my husband had a mild objection to the amount of fine grounds that made their way into the coffee.
Do actual skywriters still fly over the beaches in L.A? I saw my first actual skywriter over Venice Beach, and I remember thinking it was just like in the movies.
I have no memory of NFL refs having pistols, but I wasn’t paying much attention.
My husband and I dated for almost two years before we decided to get married, and it was a good thing, since I’d just turned 18 when we first went out. We were 20 and 24 when we got married (three months after our mutual proposal), and my mom was not thrilled. His parents had gotten married two weeks after they met at the ages of 20 and 22, and their marriage went the distance (unlike that of my parents), so they were a little more optimistic.
I haven’t seen one in maybe five years? Pre-pandemic. But it was still an occasional sight until then.
My parents were married a month after meeting, but they were both pushing 30. I think WWII both hurried and delayed marriages in the 40s. They were introduced by my mom’s roommate who was my dad’s first cousin, so, it was not like she was marrying some totally unknown person.
What’s with the general Eagles hate? Overplayed isn’t the same as bad. And who can hate a song that gives us these covers (which can never be overplayed)?
