Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

I voted NOTA since I live in a townhouse development that doesn’t allow political signs and I haven’t seen anyone being defiant. So no signs whatsoever. Expanding beyond my neighborhood to the purplish red area around it, it’s probably 80-20 in favor of Trump. However, it seems like the amount of signs of any type are light. I don’t know if that means people are reluctant or if signs are going out of favor as a method of expression.

If there happens to be an over the top ridiculous display it’s 100% of the time for Trump.

I haven’t seen a single Harris or Trump sign in my entire city. However, there are a lot of signs for local candidates, e.g. mayor. And oddly also a few for the Republican candidate for congress, who has zero chance in this very blue district.

Me too. Wish I didn’t; but it happens, because both things are on a first Tuesday.

I said I was watching with keen interest, but “considerable trepidation” would have been closer. I’ve written the paper and voted, so (considering personal financial and energy/time levels) there’s not a lot else I can do.

I’ll be at a dance election night. And also, I’ll be anxiously looking at the NYT prediction dial between sets. But i won’t get home until ~11, so I’ll go to bed after that.

Got 1 sleeve of Reese’s Cups and another of mini-Snickers, put my skeleton outside my apt., turned on my outside light, and waited…

And waited, and waited…

Got diddly this year. Is it me, or is trick-or-treating just something which is slowly fading out of the American experience? And if so, why?

I got 1. Count 'em, 1.

A 4 year old fairy with her father. WTF am I going to do with all this candy? I don’t eat it, and I give out full sized bars (if anybody shows up!)

It was fading when I was in prime trick or treating age throughout the 80s. Sure, part of that was fallout from various Satanic Panic types, and the endless concerns about poison / razor blades in candies, but it was also work for the parents, as the holiday didn’t line up with weekends. In elementary and middle school, there were trick or treat events held at the school on the friday after, with raffles, and tickets and shows and so forth. So while I remember doing some T-o-t’ing, it was the exception, not the norm. Especially where I grew up in Las Cruces NM - a lot of the neighborhoods were really far apart, so hit 8-10 houses and get in a car to drive to the next.

As for current T-o-T - here in Colorado Springs, we had our first snow yesterday, so very typical weather for this time of year. With the mountains, the sun was down by 5:30 (not down, but behind the mountains) and the temps dropped FAST. By 6pm it was 45, with 40% humidity and by 8pm it was 40 (in Fail units to be clear).

So we had go by but didn’t have the lights on and no candy to hand out.

If door-to-door trick-or-treating is fading, I suspect it’s because of distrust and fear of neighbors that families may not know well. Events like “trunk or treat” – where you bring your kids to a known place, like the parking lot at your church, and get candy from people you know – are a thing now.

FWIW, prior to COVID, we would often have over 100 kids, but it was really variable; some years, we’d run out of candy, some years, we wouldn’t get many kids at the door. We had 40 this year, which is the biggest turnout we’ve had since COVID.

Drop it off at your local voting precinct on Election Day. We election workers are stuck there 14 hours and some sweet treats would be enjoyed and appreciated.

Or, drop it off for the break room at your local library~those librarians are under appreciated and underpaid.

Someone was handing out potatoes in the neighborhood this year.
I find that a bit odd lol.

My neighborhood still has a lot of trick or treaters. It’s lighter (and warmer) now that the time change occurs the first weekend in November.

We had over a hundred.

We had fewer Trick-or-Treaters than the last two years but still a decent turnout (likely just over 40). 5-6:30 was the prime doorknocking time, but a few of the older kids were still coming by until 8pm

We had three doorbell rings this year, which is +1 from last year. Two of them were groups of little kids. I live in a suburban neighborhood and when my kids were young it was definitely a thing, but all the kids on the street have grown up and moved away, and those with little kids now seem to go elsewhere for T-o-T, my guess to parties or other centralized activities for them. I suspect the newer neighborhoods with a lot of young families saw a lot more action.

55 kids this year. Last year we had 50.

A friend’s kid got a potato. Is this a thing now?

ETA: I now see that giving a potato has been a trend on Tik Tok

mmm

Also: young families with young kids are decreasingly likely to be able to buy homes in the sorts of nice suburban neighbourhoods one can go trick-or-treating in with any sense of security. I’ve noticed that where I grew up, there are a lot fewer kids than there used to be and a lot more elderly types

We only had one ring. There may have been another one when i was sleeping. (I was wiped out yesterday from a covid vaccination the day before.) There were lots of kids walking up and down the street, but they didn’t ring our bell. Dunno why not. Maybe because they have to walk uphill to get to our house? Maybe because they don’t know us?

I didn’t count but it was probably around 40. It was much later than usual when the first kid got here. I though it was going to be a bust. Then we got a bunch in a row. Still lighter than last year.

Last year, it was unseasonably cold and very windy. This year, we’d gotten an inch of rain last night. Turn out was lower both years. Mrs Magill and I usually set up a table at the end of the driveway, so we can chat with the kids and their chaperones. In 2019, we had wine for the adults.

We got about 10 kids maybe. Most of them all together in the first group. Others were two sisters and the last was one little girl dressed as a witch.

I bought a 4 lb bag of individually wrapped Goldenbergs Peanut Chews, not even for Halloween, it was just a good deal I found online.

Meant to mention I live in a complex which skews predominantly older, but there are some little kids living here, one right on the other side of my bedroom wall. Suburban zoning for almost a mile east before it flips to commercial, but there is a big city park to my west. An apt. complex you’d think would be perfect for the reward: time ratio (lots of doors to knock on in a short amount of time).
