Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

There are currently zero people in my life that smoke cigarettes. At least openly. In the past there was always one weirdo that rolled their own even when it was cheap to buy cigarettes. Now it would probably be a lot cheaper to do it that way but I don’t know anyone who does.

The last person I knew who smoked was my brother-in-law’s brother. He died an awful death from cancer.

No I refuse to let you be astounded.

I don’t like country music. He died long before I was born. The country music that has intruded into my life against my will has been pop crap I can’t get away from. Why would it be unusual to not know the music of someone that died 15 years before I was born?

I voted for 2 in the Michael Bolton poll but one of those is the song “Jack Sparrow” by Lonely Island so I’m not sure if that’s cheating.

I occasionally listen to the music I enjoy none of which are listed on the polls and probably never will be.

Music is so tied into my emotions that I have to be very selective about what I listen to and when. So I don’t chose to engage with music unless I feel primed to accept whatever reactions I might have.

When I drive longer distances I try to just listen to my thoughts.
I do take some CDs with me and have ordered an aux cable to hook up to my phone.

It is understandable to not be able to state a Hank Williams song, but his line of reasoning is nonsense. Are you ignorant of every piece of art created before your birth?

I retract my astoundation but not my above-stated position.

mmm

Old bit of cowboy lore:

Never hire a man who wears a straw hat, or rolls his own cigarettes. If he’s not trying to roll a cigarette in the wind, he’s chasing that d@#$% straw hat all over creation.

What part of “I don’t like country music” do you not understand? In the last couple of decades country has become part of pop music. Before that it was mostly regional music. Growing up in the suburbs of NYC I knew nobody who liked or listened to country. Now it’s become generic white people music. The younger people I know go to Luke Bryan concerts but would probably have a hard time naming a song by Hank Williams.

I think you are greatly overestimating the influence of Hank Williams with Yankees. I know lots of art created before my birth. Some of my knowledge is because it’s so famous that I would have no choice but to know it. Some of it because I like and seek it out. There is plenty of art that doesn’t fall into either category.

I’m also not a fan of country music. I know the name Hank Williams but couldn’t name a song by him. However I thought that if I looked through his discography I would probably see some songs that I recognize, but didn’t know were written by Williams. But no, I just took a look, and I don’t even recognize a single song title.

I recognize 15 from that list, but I do like traditional country music. Some of them I didn’t know were his.

I don’t hate country music, but I’m very selective. I love Patsy Cline, but I only like some of Loretta Lynn’s songs. I adore Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. I could only remember one Hank Williams song title, but I don’t care for his music.

I was more surprised with all the people who claim adoration for Taylor Swift that there weren’t more people who knew lots of her song titles.

I adore Taylor Swift because she triggers the MAGA. I can’t recall a title of hers, but my wife is a fan, so she probably could.

I don’t like Nashville country, but I like outlaw country (Waylon, Willie and the rest), Texas swing (Asleep At The Wheel) and Guy Clark.

I would not even be able to identify her by sight or sound.
But admire her political tenacity for sure.

I looked at the list. I know “Hey Good Lookin’” but I didn’t know he wrote it. There are probably other songs I would recognize if you played them for me because of cover versions I’ve heard. When I took the poll not one of them came to mind. In comparison I know at least 3 Hank Junior songs.

As for Taylor Swift the only song I remembered when I took the poll was “Shake it Off.” Right now writing this post I remembered one more. If you played others for me I would probably recognize more without knowing the names or who recorded it.

That’s the only one I know. Isn’t it an old one?

Oh, go deeper. The music holds up very well.

Ha, this was my one recognizable TS song as well. Nothing against her, really, just don’t know her stuff.

mmm

Ditto. I probably wouldn’t recognize the song if you played it, but I recall instances of people talking about that song. Very recognizable title.

And all those who die from Secondhand Smoke. 40,000 Americans a year.

Same here, I know two guys that will smoke one or two cigars a year, for new years or something.

I just checked- of the top Ten Hank W songs, I recognize 3 by their titles and can even do a few verses.
Jambalaya (On the Bayou) " Son of a gun, we’ll have big fun on the Bayou

Jambalaya and a crawfish pie and fillet gumbo"

Your Cheatin’ Heart- -on Rolling_Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and covered by Patsy Cline (and others)

and of course-" Hey, hey, good lookin’
Whatcha got cookin’?
How’s about cookin’
Somethin’ up with me?"- covered by Jimmy Buffett and many others.

So

Loach, now do you recognize those songs? Maybe you never knew that were Hank Williams songs? I had to cop to only one or two until i checked, and realized I knew more.

Once again Velocity has posted a poll in desperate need of an “Other option”.

My response would probably be “Define ‘woke’”. I certainly wouldn’t go with either the options provided as that’s already ceding the stupid point.

Dunno about @Loach , but that doesn’t help me. I even looked up the guy’s discography. “Your cheatin’ heart” sounded familiar, so I looked it up and played a little. Nope, didn’t recognize it.

I’m not very musical, and haven’t kept up with newer music. I did watch a Taylor Swift concert on Netflix, and i enjoyed it, but i don’t remember the names of the songs. And the poll asked, “off the top of your head”. The only Swift title i remembered off the top of my head was “look what you made me do”, because it’s a memorable name. And i played a few bars of that and did recognize the tune.

Yeah, i don’t think I’d even answer the question that directly. That’s definitely a question to talk around in a presidential debate.

I could name Hank Williams songs, as well as Hank Williams Junior songs and a few Junior Junior songs.
And I’m not even a country music fan.

But I could not name a Taylor Swift song with a gun to my head.
