Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

Huh? Yeah, it does.

I’m curious if any white person here has been called a “cracker” in the last 30 years. Or ever

Bad typo! Bad!

I heard it used about other people, for example, while working as a therapist within the last few years. And not jocularly.

“Cracker” was certainly used as an epithet in the past, and while I haven’t heard it in a while, it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s still being used. But the allegations about Cracker Barrel management could use some evidence.

Oh, ouch! I apologize for that typo.

I don’t associate “cracker barrel” with “white crackers”, fwiw. Neither the restaurant nor the brand of cheese.

The Cracker Barrel argument is nonsensical - cracker as both an adjective and noun has tons of uses that have nothing to do with the derogatory usage, and its usage by the company is clearly documented. ‘Blackie’ is a singular nickname that coincides with a derogatory term. It’s like comparing ravens and writing desks.

That is in fact, exactly where I got my list. I asked ChatGPT to list the dances in that scene. For some reason it omitted The Boogaloo, which is mentioned also.

They have cleaned up their overt racism.

I had hoped that would get the link magic, but it didn’t

Although sometimes it’s the customers

Yes, Cracker Barrel (the restaurant chain) has an established history of bigoted behavior, by both management and employees.

AFAIK, there’s no clear link between the restaurant’s name and the term “cracker” being a derogatory term for white people, or any evidence that the chain’s founders chose the name intentionally to somehow “own” that. Coincidence, at most, IMO.

I wasn’t trying to say that. And I’m sorry I wrote something that was so completely misunderstood. (Common ADHD thing… I understood how what I said worked according to my brain)

Why is a raven like a writing desk?

Only it’s not a singular nickname. It’s an incredibly common nickname for black animals, following a common naming convention. I’ve heard it for lots of animals, and while I’m not surprised that it’s used on a derogatory way for people, today is the first time I’ve actually heard of that usage.

I’m not invested in using that name, and i don’t like using words that offend people. So I won’t name anything “Blackie” going forward. But it still just sounds like a “descriptive”-y childish name to me.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear - I meant its use is only as a nickname, it doesn’t have all those other uses like ‘cracker’ does.

Neither one has been in my kitchen.

Because Poe wrote on both.

mmm

Residence Inn - my daughter lives down the street from that place. There is a golf club next door. Maybe the Cowboys shoulda spent more time this past training camp on football. :joy:

Regarding the waffles, my MIL got one of the flip-over waffle irons, like you see at hotels, for some reason. When we were getting ready to sell her house, she said we could take anything, and that was one thing she gave us. Bulky, but brand new and it does make a good waffle!

On the subject of slurs…
