Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

I don’t carry money with me. I’ve got a tendency to piss it away.

We changed our lock to an electronic pin pad nearly a decade ago. I never have house keys with me because our house doesn’t have a key. Okay, there’s a backup key in case something goes wrong with the electronic lock but I don’t carry a copy of that key.

I also carry my phone, keys, and credit card with me whenever I leave the house — the CC is in the same holder as my ID — so I answered based on which one I’d be the most willing to not take if I were just, say, walking the dog around the block (answer: the CC/ID).

I can use my phone or my car to enter my house through the garage. So, although I typically have keys, wallet and phone with me when I’m out and about, the keys are the only one I could do without.

ETA: I just realized I need my keys to operate my car, so I guess I’m never without all three unless I’m out for a walk on the beach. In that case I’ll have my phone and probably my wallet, but not my keys.

I was surprised that the “what wakes you up” poll didn’t include the things that most commonly wakes me up: it’s time to get up. It’s not the sun: most of the year i want up well after dawn. And it’s not my alarm clock: i usually wake up 20 minutes before that goes off. It’s just morning.

I never carry house keys because there aren’t any. There are doors into our sunroom, front door, side door, and garage. We don’t have a single key to any of the doors.

On the other hand I never leave home without my money/cards and phone. Actually my cards are in my phone’s wallet. Even walking down to our barn involves carrying my phone.

I mostly wake up because my internal alarm tells me I’ve slept enough. That’s usually between 5 and 6 am. I rarely use an alarm unless I MUST be up and moving before 6am.

I have to get up for a pee sometimes, but I’m not really awake and the minute I crawl back in bed I’m asleep again.

Same for pet shenanigans. Mostly they wake me up by all crowding around and I overheat and/or get crampy because I can’t move. Three or four well-placed cats can feel like being mummy wrapped in an electric blanket!

I wake up automatically between 6 and 7 am. Earlier in the summer. But I also wake up around 2 or 3 am because our old dog Loki wants to go out to pee. But I fall back to sleep after the two of us empty our bladders.

I sleep without my hearing aid so alarms/phone notifications/etc have zero effect.

If I forget any of the three I turn around and go back. I wouldn’t be able to drive without the keys. The only time I don’t have all three is when I go for a walk for health. Then I would only have my phone so I can listen to music or a podcast.

Unlikely I would leave the house without any of those things but if I had to pick one, my phone I guess. The other two are basically attached to my pants so difficult to leave behind.

I have a bathrobe just for walking to the bathroom from the bedroom and back. I get dressed immediately. There’s never any “hanging around” in it.

I don’t even own a bathrobe. Nobody lives in my house except my wife and me, so walking around naked or in my briefs is not an issue. If I’m “hanging around the house” I’ll just throw on athletic shorts and a t-shirt.

My office moved from an old building to a new build about 7 years ago. The old building didn’t have a numbered 13th floor. The new one does. To the best of my knowledge, nobody cares that there’s a 13th floor.

At 3 pm in warm weather, I put a grazing muzzle on one of my gf’s horses as a favor to my gf. She works from home, but cannot just leave her office. I always have my phone in my pocket when I do this.

One day she saw me walking back to the house from the pasture. I was still carrying the grazing muzzle, so she asked what the problem was.

I told her I forgot my phone. So I grabbed it and left again. See, the fitness app on my phone wants me to walk a certain amount each day and I like to “close my ring” (walk the appropriate amount). So I returned home and walked again to get credit for those steps!

I went back and added “other”, because sometimes I wake up because I’ve actually had enough sleep.

If your sleeping habits are regular, that might feel like “just morning”. Or, if your sleeping habits are regular, you may wake up around the same time even if you haven’t had enough sleep.

Meanwhile, I have two. One is “summer weight”. I rarely wear it, and when I do it is because I am doing a wake and bake and I call that robe my smoking jacket. The other is very heavy and I wear it in the winter if I’m cold.

I never run with my phone & only sometimes carry it when I’m walking. Although I don’t use it that often, i have a dedicated MP3 player that is much smaller & lighter than the phone & has the added benefit of not draining the phone’s battery so if I want music, I use that. Probably half the time I (rarely) get on a commercial flight I’m like, “Damn, I left my headphones at home” so there’s no way to both watch & listen to entertainment, either too loud or don’t want to crank it up & be obnoxious to everyone around me. I go out all the time w/o phone or wallet, or sometimes I’ll just take some $ with me to pick up some takeout.

I used to work in a building where we had 4 consecutive floors, 11, 12, 14, & 15.
Because of the way elevator banks work in modern buildings, I’ve been in some where I don’t have any clue if there was a 13th floor or not as there was no option to get to any floor below (say) 20th floor for me to push in a given elevator.

I stayed in a skilled nursing facility for 2 weeks when my brain surgery got infected. They’d pump me with antibiotics 6 hours a day. My roommate was a selfish man with Parkinson’s who always wanted the windows closed because he was cold, but refused to wear long pants or get under the covers or switch sides so I’d be near the window, so I baked. I bought him snacks on Amazon to lighten him up. The only thing that worked was when I bought him a longer USB charge cable ($6). That sucked.

There were truly crazy people in that facility. Screamers. I negotiated a deal where I could walk around the outside building daily, 250meters / lap. I’d do it like 40-45 times a day (10-11+ clicks), which kept me half sane.

I’ve only found out recently that I should get a pneumonia shot. I thought I was too young. I also don’t have shingles. I’d never had chickenpox, and there wasn’t a vaccine when I was little. I’ve been told I need the chickenpox vaccine before I can get the shingles vaccine.

Do you have any idea how hard it is for an adult to get a chickenpox vaccine? I’ve given up trying to find one.

The last MP3 player I had was a couple of decades ago. Much more convenient to have it all in one place. It’s much more versatile than just having music.

I never had chicken pox. I never had the chicken pox vaccine. I got the shingles vaccine last year with no issues.

Yes, i wake up in the morning even if i haven’t had enough sleep. I know what time it is while I’m sleeping in party because if the sun, but it’s not like i wake up “because it’s light”. Most of the year i routinely sleep through sunrise, and sometimes for an hour or two more. If i try to go back to sleep, it usually doesn’t work, so i stay up until lunch and nap in the afternoon.
