Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

My family rented the Sixth Sense the first week it was available on DVD. My poor brother came home while we were watching the movie, and walked into the living room just in time for the twist to be revealed. “Guess I don’t need to watch this now,” he sighed.

I think he eventually stopped resenting that accidental spoiling

I voted other for the toothpaste/toothbrush poll. Because it wasn’t multiple select. I wet the toothbrush, add toothpaste, and wet that too. I don’t rinse after brushing, though, because you’re not supposed to, and need the moisture or my mouth feels gross with too-dry paste residue.

I love Michael Jackson in small doses. In college, a friend lent me the Thriller album. To me, all the songs sounded the same.

Ditto. I do rinse after brushing though, it’s like leaving a bunch of pus in your mouth.

Same for me. I’m not going to leave a bunch of toothpaste residue in my mouth, ick. (And i usually wet the toothbrush both before and after adding paste.)

Most of us dated at some point in our lives.

fwiw, I am aware that my experience isn’t universal. When I was dating, I always paid for “my share” of each date. But my roommate, dating at the same time, never paid. She didn’t believe it counted as a date unless the guy paid for her. We argued about it. I thought she was crazy, and that was an unfair system, and yes, that felt infantilizing, and not romantic, to me. But I suspect my roommate was more mainstream in her views than I was. After all, I went on to support a stay-at-home dad for many years, and that’s also very much outside of the mainstream.

I dated when I was like 19 to 24 when I met my wife. It was way different than when I was 52-62 (now). I take your point that some things/standards don’t change that much, but the start of dating truly has. You meet some wonderful person/dumbass sight unseen rfn and go from there and it can get a little weird at the start.

I agree the ethics of dating is unchanged. It just takes an additional date to get into your pattern, whatever that is – date 1 is really date zero.

FWIW, I do like treating a woman to a good time on the first (2nd in this reality) date and paying. It feels romantic to me. I wouldn’t expect things to stay that way though.

Also, 90% (95%?) of the time, date 3-4 never happens. Life online.

I don’t want to say men are disposable, but it can feel that way.

But the Thriller video is a true classic!

You know, maybe this isn’t fair but I’m going to go so far as to say if you haven’t dated in the last 10 years? You really don’t know how it works. You don’t. It’s all different now. Unless you live in a tiny town or something it’s all changed

Someways it’s way better. Someways it well and truly sucks

Not really all surprised that the 21st century Supermen aren’t getting much love, and that it is a close race for the Joker spot (I accidentally made it multiple choice for my usual space cadet nonreasons). Utterly shocked that Adam West is winning the Batman poll, and that Christian Bale is so low.

It’s been decades since I’ve “dated.”
I recall women insisting on paying their own way and women who expected me to pay. Maybe a couple “I’ll get the movie, you get dinner” type situations. What I don’t recall is a woman ever paying for the whole date.

My first date with my now-wife was the Taste of Chicago, a food festival where you’d buy tickets to use at the various booths. I can’t recall exactly, but I want to say we each bought our own tickets.

We signed up for a WXRT-sponsored bike ride during our first date. (It was two weeks in the future, so I guess we felt good about how the date was going.) We each paid our own way for that. It turned out to be our fourth date.

Christopher Reeve was just so perfect for the role.

Maybe because of the age of Dopers (Adam West is the Batman of our childhoods), maybe because the vote was split among those who prefer a darker, more serious Batman.

I’m surprised that Kevin Conroy isn’t getting more love. FTR, he performed the voice of Batman in The Animated Series.

He is winning due to the fact there are so many other choices, none of which stand out.

And the non-single people did so successfully. Which anyone still single at my age* probably didn’t (though I suppose it depends on how one defines “successfully”.)

*raises hand

That’s a point. But the question about who’s paying for what doesn’t seem to have disappeared entirely.

And he’s probably the only one almost all of us have seen. Personally, I didn’t spend a lot of time trying to get this one right. I went with my first reaction.

Yeah. I haven’t actually seen most of the Batman movies, so I picked Adam West just because he’s the only one I’m really familiar with.

I definitely voted for my childhood Batman. He’s Batman to me. The others are actors in Batman movies.

Thriller is an amazing video! Many of his songs are true classics. Just… one at a time please.

Yeah. I concur.
