Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

I store my spices and herbs in one of those skinny pull-out cupboards with two shelves. The only order is that the name has to be facing right, so I can read them without picking them up when standing at the counter.

I think all polls should be private.

Noted.

  • missing sleep not knowing the state of @DrDeth’s spice rack

I generally enjoy public polls. There are rare polls where i check and only answer because it’s private (“where do you hide your keys”) but mostly i prefer public polls.

Yeah, I don’t understand a global objection to public polls. They’re not really any different than if someone starts a thread asking a poll-type question and people reply by posting their answers (which happens once in a while and I end up wondering “Why couldn’t this have been a poll?”).

Yeah. I mean, sure, polls asking questions that might be considered sensitive should be anonymous. But the majority of our polls are just random, silly, mundane, pointless questions. I cannot fathom why someone would object to having what bands they like or how they arrange their spices be public.

How about those recent polls by biotop, like when are you least likely to be home, where do you hide your house key, and  where do you keep your valuables?

I am willing to go on record to say my spices are organized on little shelves that were designed for non-specific organizing and not an actual spice rack. They are arranged in alphabetical order. All because of my wife. If it was up to me they would be all jumbled together.

None of those polls were public, so that’s beside the point.

But no, I wouldn’t have voted in those specific polls if they were. But that doesn’t mean that no polls should be public, ever.

Karen also mixes up the “-er” and “-ist” suffixes.

During lockdown, we would often get the grocery deliveries for a house just across the street. My legs work, so I would just bring them over.

It depends. If the grocery order was for one of my neighbors I’d just walk them over there myself. If they were for someone across town I’d probably wait for the deliverer to figure it out.

Unless it was obviously a nearby neighbor I’d take it there, otherwise I’d contact the deliverer. In the old days I would have also posted on our local Facebook, but I’m off that place.

It depends how busy I am. I might bring it to them, or I might contact them and wait for them to deal. And it might depend on how mobile they are. But If I could tell who was supposed to get the groceries, I’d reach out to them, not to the store.

I would first check to see whether there was anything in the bags to identify either the proper orderer or the deliverer. Unless it was something like 95ºF out, I probably wouldn’t bring anything into the refrigerator while I did that, as I don’t think it would take that long.

If I couldn’t find anything, then if it was hot out I’d probably schlep the cold-needing stuff into the produce cooler and/or the freezer, as relevant (more room than in the fridge); and if it was cold out I’d probably bring in anything that shouldn’t freeze. I’d also offer to do that if I could contact people, if it was going to take a while to get it where it belonged. And if it was still there that night I’d bring the rest of it inside, because critters.

If I found contact info, I’d call and/or email the people involved – and if I found info for both where they belonged and where they came from, I’d contact both of them, unless I were confident the first one I reached would contact the other. If it was somebody close by, I’d probably bring it over myself; unless when I called them they wanted to come get it instead. If it belonged far away, that’s probably on the delivery people unless the customer wants to come fetch it.

If I didn’t find contact info, I’d call the neighbors. (And, again, probably bring it over myself; but they might come up for it.) If that still didn’t work, I’d sigh and dig out my Nextdoor password and post it there; and call the local radio station, which I think still posts all sorts of miscellaneous on the morning show.

If none of that worked, and the stuff was still here a couple of days later – then hey, free groceries.

ETA: I don’t know why Karen posted something either misspelled or typo’d. But these things happen.

It depends. If it was for a neighbor & it wasn’t pouring, I’d take it to them.
I live on Side St, we also have a Side Ln in our town; one had 2-digit addresses & one has 4-digit addresses so two of the three components are different, yet I’ve gotten mail for someone on the other one. Unless I was about to be going out anyway, I’m not getting in my car to be an unpaid GrubbyUberDasher™ .

One day I was outside & saw a guy driving up & down the street a couple of times. Finally, he stops me & shows me his phone; he’s delivering Chik-Fil-A to someone on my street name; except the two was about four towns away. I don’t know which CFA he picked it up from, but my guess is one close to the delivery address, which means he’d be driving around with their order in his car for a minimum of 45 mins, & probably more like an hour until he was finally able to deliver it. Just what they wanted, late & lousy (not hot & soggy) CFA!

Same. And if i found that info, I’d call them before bringing anything into my fridge. Hey, it might be the next door neighbor who’d be over in 2 minutes. Why unbag their groceries.

I probably take the rural route. I’ve often made that choice, although if there’s stop and go traffic on the direct route, the rural route is usually faster, too. Or at least about the same.

But i sometimes take the rural route rather than the highway route just because it’s prettier, even though that costs me 5-10 minutes.

But i said it depends on my mood, because sometimes i don’t want to think, and the highway is easier.

(Re: groceries on my doorstep)

I’d spend a minimal amount of time trying to figure out where it was supposed to go, and if it was within a block or two I’d probably go ahead and complete the delivery.

If I can’t find an address or it’s not close by, then sorry, it’s not my problem. Food delivery services prohibit re-delivery after the order has been out of the driver’s possession; I assume it’s the same for groceries.

Hopefully the intended customer will either get a refund or a new delivery, and free stuff for me!

I didn’t comment on my own poll.

The situation happened to me yesterday and I posted right after I got home. I voted that I would always take the rural route. That’s probably not good enough for the more literal minded. If it was a hour or two longer it wouldn’t even occur to me to add that much time to my trip so it didn’t seem relevant. This particular route I know very well and I take it often to avoid traffic. Driving at a steady pace with changing scenery keeps me alert and engaged. I would much rather do that than have a frustrating time in traffic.
