Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

What is this “facefull of ice” business? I’ve never gotten a face full of ice when drinking something with ice in it. Maybe it’s in how you tip the glass?

ETA: I voted that I have wicked drinking skills; because apparently I do. I just thought they were normal, though.

I usually order drinks without ice. But if I’m in the mood for ice, i will eat the ice after drinking the bulk of the beverage.

I’ve never had a face full of ice, either, however.

I was an extra in the movie Heart of Dixie in the late 80s. The scene was shot in Holly Springs MS at the courthouse. After we all arrived at the school gym just after sunrise, we were bused to the town square where a tent had been set up for us to stay until we were needed. We weren’t allowed to bring anything with us except our car keys, so I had to leave my book behind (I was well aware there would be some waiting). We waited all day. They fed us hotdogs for lunch. There were some children there, so to entertain them they played musical chairs using the Paul Simon song “You Can Call Me Al”. All day. I now hate that song with the heat of a thousand suns. I’ve never been so bored in my life.

We were taken to the set location in the late afternoon. We waited around again. One take was done and then we waited some more. A few other folks and I decided to abandon ship. My feet were hurting from saddle oxfords that didn’t quite fit (we were dressed in 50s period clothes). We took off in what we hoped was the direction of the gym and finally made it back before sunset. It was one of the most miserable days of my life. And the scene didn’t even make it into the movie.

I’ve never gotten a face full of ice, but I’ve gotten an unexpected mouth full of ice, and I absolutely HATE that. I drink iced drinks with a straw. Always.

I have zero idea what Mafia is.

I hadn’t noticed the Mafia game. If I had noticed it, I have no idea what a Mafia game is, except that it sounds like a game I wouldn’t feel like playing.

@Biotop to redo the Mafia poll as multiple choice.

My issue is that these typically possess very little context, going in. If they were done in a more role-playing vein, with a GM with a lot more control over the proceedings, with an established detailed setting, in-depth character sheets with goals and motives along with abilities, Macguffins and surprises galore, I might be tempted to give it a go.

But it instead just seems like it’s “Throw a bunch of strangers into a room, let them figure out what to talk about on their own” and go from there. Instead of role-playing per se it seems to hinge on reading a bunch of context-light interactions and looking for inconsistencies and tells.

Mafia is a game where a vast majority of players are the good folks known as Town. Alas there are a few players assigned as villains who are working against Town to support their own evil team. In Mafia all the players try and guess who the good Town players are and who are the masquerading villains. The villains all secretly know who the others scoundrels are. But the villains all pretend to be good Town folks.

Generally in the Day phases of the game the players try to determine who is a villain and the player with the most votes is expelled. Did the villains lead Town astray? Can you guess who is a villain and convince others? Can you pretend to find a villain but lead Town astray? How good of a liar are you?

How well can you defend yourself if falsely accused? Or if accurately accused, can you convince others of your innocence despite that being a lie?

In the Night phase, the villains meet in a secret lair and scheme. By the end of the Night phase they murder a Town player who is then out of the game.

This Day/night process continues until either the villains ( wolves) control the Town in numbers or instead the Town roots out all the heels. Who will win?

Yep, and if it is “to go” I want them to fill it with ice, then add soda.

My issues with Mafia or werewolf, etc is that the bad guys have a HUGE advantage. Not fair.

2/3rd of the time the bad guys.

I don’t enjoy Mafia or any of the dozens of Mafia spinoffs, but I get that people like them.

Thank you for information. I was right; I’m not interested. Those who are interested: have fun.

This, basically.

I prefer the genre of dinner murder mystery sets, which I’ve done a couple of times with friends. And I’m reasonably good at it.

Mafia always sounds good - but it’s too much work, for too little fun in most cases for me. So if you enjoy it, happiness, but I generally pass.

I’ve played Mafia a couple of times, and didn’t love it. I didn’t realize there was a game starting up now, but now that i know, I’ll pass. I thought it was clever to advertise it in the popular poll thread, though, and i hope they get enough players.

I used to play Mafia all the time on Opal’s Fathom board. To keep the game going players need to be checking the tread several times a day and that’s not a commitment I’d make now that I’m no longer tied to a PC all day like I was back then.

This is all I needed to know. Have fun, but I’m out.

mmm

Mafia, like the entire Thread Games forum isn’t something I’m interested in.

I’ve been hospitalized twice. This is neither “once” nor “a few times”; at least, as I define “few”.

I had a very long run of never having to be in a hospital. That ended in a big way a few years ago.

Twice for me, too. With a 55 year hospital-free interval between.
