Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

That’s fair. I still buy a dozen (rarely, they still aren’t cheap) but normally only use 8-10 by the time I reluctantly throw them out (well past the “best by” date but when I start to feel uncomfortable). I could buy a half-doz instead, but then I end up short when I need those couple extra. But since the food waste is hurtful, I really should go to a half doz, just that everyone cutting food costs has already bought all the ones in stock normally.

I’ve often used eggs after the “best by" date. They aren’t good for meringue, but they are fine for chocolate chip cookies, or even for scrambled eggs. I mean, i crack them separately, and look at them, and sniff them. But I’m not sure I’ve ever found a bad egg. Eggs keep really well.

Yep, I normally stop using them at two weeks past the best buy date, but I normally was using them for a gently poached egg in ramen, or other dish that calls for fresher eggs. But baked? Made into a French Toast custard, or scrambled/frittata? Fine up to two weeks past for me.

During the pandemic i stocked up, and we ended up with a lot of eggs at one point. I’m pretty sure i was eating eggs at least 2 months past their “best by" date, and i ate some of those soft boiled. Honestly, i don’t usually look at the date unless I’m making meringue, or otherwise need a firm white.

You haven’t met me.

mmm

It’s going to depend on how much less than $25 the item is. I’m probably not going to want to pay more than $4 or $5 for shipping; but that’s a much greater percentage of, say, $2.50 than it is of $24.99.

And it’s also going to depend on how badly I need the thing, on whether I can get it from a reasonably-local brick-and-mortar, on whether I can reasonably combine it with a larger order of things I also need from the same place, and on whether anybody reliable is offering the same thing online for a smaller combined price-and-shipping cost.

Did not vote.

Same as thorny locust. I’ve bought things that cost less than their shipping, if they were cheap, and i really wanted them, and there wasn’t another way to get them. Most notably, i once bought a tiny plant that cost a couple of bucks from Canada, but the minimum price to get it shipped, which included getting a phytosanitary certificate so it could legally enter the US, was something like $30.

(It’s still in my backyard, but i may replace it next spring.)

For most small items, I’ll pay about $5 for shipping, and will have them shipped if there isn’t a better way to obtain them. Doesn’t matter if the small item costs $2.50 or $50.

I don’t care how much is “product” and how much is “Shipping” You want to send me a light item for 1p but charge me £25 for shipping fine, you want to send me a heavy item for £25 and provide free shipping also fine. How you divide the bottom line cost is not my concern.

If I read that poll aright, everyone who voted put chocolate chip first?

I did not, so i don’t think so.

Here is a description of how ranked polls are supposed to work.
(I don’t understand it !)

I am lodging a protest:

  1. The cookie poll was closed before I could vote.
  2. I didn’t get any cookies.

Cookies are for new members only!

Look in your browser; there’s lots of cookies there!

I’m reasonably confident I can catch the ball absent interference, but I suspect a highly valuable HR ball would generate lots of jostling. That said, the less time I have to think about it, the better my odds.

Cookie poll is NOT closed. The results (“winner”) are always published, using only existing voters.

If that ball were hurtling toward me, I would duck, no matter how valuable it is.

Yeah, I was thinking 20% on a 25$ item.

Yeah. I voted ‘likely to be hit in face’; but I probably actually wouldn’t be hit in the face, because I’d probably be trying to hide under the seat with my arms over my head.

I would have a reasonable chance of a normal home run but there are too many factors to be sure. For a historic home run it would be dumb luck. Everyone around you would be aware of the situation and it would turn into a rugby scrum in the bleachers. It also depends on if it’s a laser beam line drive or a looping long pop up. It’s still maybe but I wouldn’t be confident.

After years of going to games the only foul ball I have was one that rolled to my wife’s feet while I was in the bathroom. That’s how I knew she was the one.
