Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

In my particular state of health, probably something proteiny. Of the choices given, can I have whole grain carbs?

There is a large overlap between something sweet and something carb heavy.

mmm

To be frank, I didn’t really understand the question. Why would my beliefs be a matter, and then why limit myself to ‘no heavy outliers’, whatever that means?

Given my prediabetes, I probably have to choose the fatty snack. Still not healthy, but won’t spike my pancreas as much as the sugary or carby snack.

Covid killed taste for sweet, so carbs it is.

Yep, but some cheese fits the bill both ways.

You can have an appointment for a meeting, but not a meeting for an appointment. QED.

Covid killed/altered my taste as well.

At least I can spice up my carbs with herbs and salt and sauces.

Sweet snacks usually don’t satisfy my appetite, in fact they can increase it.

Yes, you can have no bananas, but no, you can’t have yes bananas.

As a business owner/supervisor I call impromptu meetings on occasion. I make reservations for various things that are appointments without necessarily meeting anyone.

An appointment is an agreement or plan to engage in some activity at a future time. The idea that a plan to have a meeting is the same as the meeting itself is a category error.

You can make an appointment to have a meeting to discuss future appointments to have future meetings.

Meeting in Samarra, John O’Hara’s poignant novel about a team sit-down with Death. Agenda to follow.

I assumed whole grain carbs, because that’s what I eat. Really surprised to see in the poll that fat is considered “healthier” than carbs. But I shouldn’t be surprised given all the negative propaganda against carbs in recent years. There’s no question that whole grain crackers are healthier than candy or a deep-fried stick of butter.

Assuming the oil used is a saturated fat, the crackers will spike your glucose more. Pick your poison; sugar or cholesterol. Family history and lab results indicate I am a higher risk for diabetes than heart disease, so I lean toward fats over starches, even whole grain (which is a misnomer if the fiber-rich germ is removed).

I picked carbs because a potato (in all its variants) is probably better for me than anything high in saturated fat. I don’t subscribe to the carbs = evil philosophy, or the fat = evil philosophy, FWIW. But I believe certain types of fats are unhealthier than certain types of carbs.

Who even uses saturated fats any more? I can’t even remember the last time I saw crackers made with saturated fats, it was so long ago.

I live mostly on whole grains. I bake all my own bread, and since I’ve figured out how to add vital wheat gluten, I can make 100% whole wheat bread with a good rise. I love its rich flavor and nourishing feel. The anti-wheat propaganda these days sounds crazy to me.

Potatoes are good too.

If that’s what works for your body; good. I can live without starches and don’t need to worry about my blood sugar. I also have Hashimoto’s Syndrome which makes gluten particularly unfriendly. I couldn’t help but cheat when I was in Paris a few weeks ago, and, boy, did I pay the price. Achy joints and a sluggishness that didn’t wear off for weeks. The same diet doesn’t work for everybody,

I was talking about whatever the stick of butter was fried in. Saturated fats have been generalized as a dietary villain a lot longer than wheat.
