Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

Lol. I was going to say that I’ve only watched small parades held by my town, but when i worked in downtown Boston we had a couple of large “our sports team won the big one!” parades that were close to my office at lunch time, and i went. I’ve also been to a few pride parades, including Boston, Toronto, Minneapolis, and maybe a few others.

I enjoy a few of them. In addition to the two i voted for, I like the Carol of the bells. I kinda like the kids begging for figgy pudding. I nearly voted for the Grinch, too.

No hate for “A Holly Jolly Christmas”?

In addition to hating anything sung by Burl Ives, the meaningless, gratuitous rhyme of Holly with Jolly makes me grind my teeth.

Seen many; marched in some, most recently the no kings /pride here in Boston with my old employer.

Naw, i haven’t heard that nearly enough to hate it.

The only parade I recall seeing in person was a homecoming parade in Iowa City for the University of Iowa. I’m not a fan of parades.

I’m also not a fan of any Christmas songs, as I don’t like Christmas, and Christmas music reminds me of Christmas.

I wanted to mention my dislike about Feliz Navidad isn’t that it’s worse than any of the others. The problem is that it’s perfectly ear-wormy in ways some of the others aren’t. So if I hear it - it’s sticking with me forever it feels like. Aaaarrrrrghhhh!

I’ve been to a lot of local parades, particularly for the 4th of July, and marched in a few of them. I’ve never attended a large parade, however.

Although I was born and raised in SoCal I didn’t go to the Rose Parade in person until I was in my 30s. Once, in high school, a bunch of friends and I were roaming around on New Year’s Eve and thought “Hey! Let’s drive to Pasadena.” But no one had enough energy to drive from the Westside to the San Gabriel Valley, so the idea died. Later I went with a bf who lived in Alhambra (adjacent to Pasadena, so handy). We went around 10 the night before with our provisions and got a good sidewalk position. We had a bunch of high schoolers with us, so it was fun. This was one of the years when the DooDah Parade tortillas were in full flight (I’ve been to the DooDah Parade several times). I enjoyed it a lot, but it’s one of those things to do once and never again. Stupidly, my biggest impression from the parade was the smell. Who knew so many flowers could smell so strongly and so nicely??? I once helped work on my company’s Rose Parade float, but that wasn’t going to the actual parade.

I’ve been to a few other small town parades. One I happened upon when I was shopping with a friend in Monrovia. The best part was a drumline band, You felt those drums in your bones.

I remember when a radio station I used to listen to was changing format from alternative/college to classic Rock. To “cleanse the palate” of all that Mazzy Star and Fountains of Wayne, they played “Feliz Navidad” non-stop for an entire week.

I like Burl Ives.

I checked “Santa Baby” as a song I like, but ONLY if sung by Eartha Kitt.

What fresh hell can this be?

I generally get my best ideas when I’m talking to people.

When I was growing up, my mom always played the entire record while we decorated the Christmas tree. “A Holly Jolly Christmas” always puts a smile on my face. Probably also why I like “The Little Drummer Boy” which is on the second side of the album.

The other album was We Wish You a Merry Christmas

Need some new Christmas music.

For “best ideas,” my “other” includes “while driving my car (alone),” and “while walking” (to work, say, not really “exercise.”) Same with biking. Actually, even though I don’t bike that often, it might be the highest ideas-per-minute solo transportation mode for me.

Yeah, one of my choices was “while exercising,” but it’s only when I’m either walking or running. Any other kind of exercise (eg. weights) are not conducive to receiving ideas.

I just get ideas I don’t get best ideas.

Wonderful Christmas Time is by far my least favorite Christmas song. The awful synth grates on my nerves. Some of the others I just don’t hear enough to care much.

I’ve heard of (and even listened to) radio stations which pulled similar stunts in the past, most often when they were about to initiate a format change, as @Elmer_J.Fudd notes with his local station. Why they don’t just immediately switch over to the new format, rather that playing random music – or one song or artist over and over for days – is beyond me.

There are others here who worked in radio can confirm or deny but I’ve heard it’s for a couple of reasons. It’s publicity. People hear about the stunt and wonder what is coming. They might be more likely to listen in to see what the change is. The other reason is companies suck and the rank and file might not have been told about the change. The station needs time to kick out who they want to kick out and bring in new people.

Or maybe there’s a period of time between management changeover with very little staff, and that’s an easy thing to do so that listeners know there’s still a station at that number.
